That single word brought Roman's song to a screeching halt. "W-what?" he asked, blinking. "What are you... apologizing for?" The violinist found himself utterly disoriented, part of him still stuck in that interrupted song and the other part now stumbling, attempting to understand what Wolfe was actually saying...

"I don't know yet," Wolfe responded, utterly honest and staring at him in a bewildered sort of melancholy. "The only thing that makes someone that... hurt... is someone else. The best thing in the world is other people and the worst thing in the world is when something about other people is wrong. Not wrong wrong but wrong like... like you don't like it.
"So, you know... sorry."

Roman blinked slightly before laughing softly, ignoring the bitter tinge to the sound. "You really... have nothing to apologize for, Wolfe." And that was the truth, wasn't it? The honest to God truth. Roman didn't expect nor particularly crave an apology from Wolfe-- what he wanted was impossible now, wasn't it? Besides, it wasn't as if Wolfe had done anything wrong...

"You're wrong," Wolfe interrupted him sharply--rather, interrupted the meaningful silence. "I can't hear your thoughts, Roman, but when you speak...
"There are better ways of saying this but--but I don't like it when you hurt, especially when it's... Something I can change. And there is something I can change here, isn't there? I don't like it. I want to do something about it." Interruption of the self. Break. Stop. Rethink, remeasure...--oh hell, you've never been good at that anyway.

Roman blinked, attempting to decipher what precisely Wolfe was implying through those words. Perhaps if Roman had held more self-confidence, he could have jumped to an assmption. Then again, if Roman held more self-confidence, they wouldn't be in this situation now, would they? "Wolfe..."
How could he explain what was going through his mind...?
"...why does it... matter? If I get hurt or not...? It seems to be a rather constant... situation for me," Roman whispered, more to himself than to Wolfe.

Now this was just frustrating. When someone didn't understand you, just because you didn't understand yourself--how could you know if there was anything to get in the first place?
"Everybody matters," he insisted, "Hurt's bad, it's not right.."

Ah, yes. Roman had almost fogotten about Wolfe's humanitarian instinct. The violinist smiled faintly-- some things never changed. That was good to know. "All right, Wolfe," he murmured as he turned to put the prized instrument away. "All right then..."
Balin blinked as he watched Cayden and Jitsu. The little fox bounced up and down-- afraid? "Cayden, what's going on?" the coon demanded of his bat. At the little creature's twittered response, the Alpha frowned and quickly moved to his desk, scribbling a note on some paper. "Take this to Atticus-- he should be somewhere around the Townhouse," he instructed the creature. "If you can't find him, come back as quick as you can."

"All right what? All right why? What?" Wolfe blinked in surprise at the change in Roman's resignation, though resignation it remained. "Did I just miss something again? Like... again again?"

"No," Roman smiled. "No, you didn't." Or maybe Wolfe had. Roman wasn't really sure. But at this point... it didn't matter. Just... get through this. Make it all right for now... that's all there is. The past is past, the future is still on its way...

"Okay..." Wolfe agreed hesitantly. Well at least now one of them knew what was going on, or was pretending to at least. That made things... marginally better, right?
This sort of problem always seemed to come back to haunt him, unfortunately, and he had the most uneasy feeling he wasn't going to be satisfied until he found out what the hell he'd just done wrong. Well... there'd been the un-noise in the air... and the baseball... and Kingsley? Kingsley made everyone uncomfortable these days, maybe it was sort of a lingering aura to his name, not just his foul personality. But that was unlikely.
"Are we... okay now?"

'We'. 'We'? Was there a 'we'?
...sure. Roman had learned to improvise somewhat over the years, as long as he stayed on the honest side of things. "I... I... I guess so..." the boy murmured softly.
'We'?

"Whoo, that's a relief. It's just so awful when you've got those long bouts of no resolution or real... whatever... but things are just broken, you know? Not so great for anybody. Wonder why they happen at all--it's not like they do anything good except... well, maybe you learn things, but they're not always great things--speaking of learning not great things, do you know what's going on with... Wait, no, I'm not supposed to get involved with that...

Roman smiled in spite of himself, nodding. "This way-- there's one on the outskirts of Miss raven's property," he explained before leading the wayward wolf out of the Nest and down the road to what appeared to be a strip mall. "The grocery store is around the corner," Roman nodded as he moved along. "Don't be surprised if you see any of the other members of the Nest. Everyone works here at some point..."

"Other... members?... Would I recognize any of them?" Wolfe asked, rather curious as a matter of nature, "I mean, it's not like I've been out and about an awful lot--well, out and about but not out and talking to people, more of just looking around at things and trying to figure out stuff or not really, actually, just doing stuff. Stuff as in walking. Yeah... yeah, walking, mostly."
Pause. "Didn't I come here with someone?"

"I wouldn't know-- would you?" Roman blinked. "I barely know all of them, but you tend to be more social than I am," the boy shrugged as he glanced around. "And yes, you came with someone-- a unicorn...? Should we go back and inquire as to where he is?"
