"s**t... It's coming! All teams, shielding!"

The four man teams representing R.I.O.T. Four that were assaulting the undead did not hesitate to follow that order, and what looked like a grenade was thrown on the ground in the middle of each group. That negative energy blast? It wouldn't affect the special operations teams. The army however, was a different story...

The base had a direct hit on the command center, and while most of them were entirely wiped out from the initial blast, the ones that managed to survive were indeed drained of most, if not all of their energy.

Surprisingly... the commander lived.

"Damn... you..."

He dragged himself upwards, glass crunching underfoot as his boots crushed it underfoot. His men... they were going to be dead soon, weren't they? No... it wouldn't happen. Not while he still breathed. The blast, how far did it reach? It wouldn't matter. He was pissed off now.

"I need... a status report! Who the hell can still move out there? Answer me, damn it!"

It took a bit longer than he had hoped, but he began recieving radio reports again. It did not sound good, and that was putting it lightly...

s**t. I will not allow it to end this way...

**

The blast was heard for miles, and even at the RI office, it was felt. The glass rattled just a tad, but it was enough to let Captain Ingram know that the cannon had been fired.

"Damn it... Is it ready?"

Her new second in command nodded.

"Then tear those shields to pieces, before that bloody cannon fires again!"

Thus, the same tactic that was used in Durem was used here. A massive Dispel that would hopefully eradicate that displacement field in one or two shots.

"Huh."

Reyin kicked up to his feet, which was a lot harder then it looked, and sheathed his sword. Never one to look a gifthorse in the mouth, he retrieved his duffle and climbed atop the dumpster he had been kicked into. Aside from a few scratches and bumps, the blonde was in strikingly good condition. Of course, after checking out his injuries, he couldn't help but notice the horde of undead chasing after him.

From the dumpster, Reyin hopped up and snagged ahold of a ladder leading up to a fire escape. Clambering up the ladder, Reyin would take the stairs the rest of the way to the roof, hoping for the life of him that zombies were poor climbers.

Across the rooftops Reyin would run, only making one stop along his mad dash for survival.

When the Vengeance's cannon fired, it soared above Reyin's head. The young man slid to a stop and followed the energy blast with his head and eyes, the rush of wind sweeping his hair and clothing back.

Then, the explosion. It rocked the foundation of the building he was standing on, knocking him off his feet and nearly off the roof entirely. He caught himself, or rather, was saved, by slamming against an air conditioning unit. He reached back, rubbed his head, and groaned before standing up to survey the damage.

"Dammit. Hope you're alright, old guy."

Reyin didn't want to stick around to see what was going to happen next. He vaulted over to the next rooftop.

((I'm going to assume I'm not ten miles away from the building, as they couldn't even see it at that distance, and it would be impractical to set up an ambush 10 miles away when they could have taken another route))

The gate squad was moving, when they heard the pat pat pat of something. It looked like gunfire was making its way down onto the group, hitting their shield and doing little else. The group stopped, and immediatly fire mages began to counter, incinerating any troops nearby that were in the line of sight. With four of them working, it wouldn't be long before the soldiers found that they were over their heads for the moment.

In the mean time, the Elites began to start killing any civilians close to them. A quick, short stab through the heart, minimizing any damage to the body. Shielding was reduced on the Elites, as their armour would hold for a long time against the piercing damage of the bullets. The Necromancer on the other hand began to chant under his breath, gathering his energies together, targetting the corpses on the ground.

The group then continued to walk towards the obvious building that was the gate controls. The bone and body mages were busy maintaining shields over the group, while the soldiers were killed. As more were taken out, the task would become easier, with less people firing bullets.

"Take cover!"

They did. For the most part, it worked. Marines were killed, sure enough, but not everyone. This wasn't an absolute slaughter like the last platoon, which was reduced to half its number. No, this was a force that was dug in and ready to counterattack. And counter they did...

"Mag change! Take out those shields! Ground team, get those rockets ready and blow those walking tanks back to Hell!"

With that, they fired again... only this time, the distinctive purple arcs of light that marked the bullets as Arc Disruptor rounds blazed towards the targets.

The ground troops kept moving towards the building that housed the gate controls, while the mages took to the skies. The mages began to step and run through the air to avoid bullets, while at the same time blasting torrents of fire back at the marines. One fire mage was struck by and errant bullet in the head, and downed. The others sustained damage to limbs, and while not lethal, a nuisance.

The necromancer meanwhile retreated into the streets, contacting a group of uncontrolled Brutes. It was time to bring the big guns out for these marines. The bone and body mages however simply flew around the area, maintaining the shields from any normal bullets.

Reyin didn't have much time to stop and check on the 'good guys' when he was making his escape. It was an understandable situation, really. He was a civilian, they were military, and unless there had been a draft he didn't know about, he was content to just stay out of their way.

Unfortunately, the military and Reyin's paths would cross a lot sooner than he thought.

Running across the rooftops had enabled Reyin to cross a large portion of the city without actually having to stop and fight off the undead, or explain himself to human/meta military forces. He was well on his way to freedom when he made a blind jump across yet another roof top only to find that not only was there fighting going on below him, but the space between buildings was, well...it was further than Reyin could jump.

Thankfully...

"Huphuphup!"

Three randomly placed yet life-saving feet were placed on the upper torso, shoulder, and face of three random mages, simultaneously shooting them towards the ground while keeping Reyin airborne enough to reach the next rooftop.

His flight path was pretty shaky, though, so he hit the gravel-laden rooftop on his side and rolled for a good ten feet before coming to a stop.

"Captain, the Chronos Field is being dispelled!"

"That's... impossible," Krik said. "Get those shields... restored. Evasive pattern... Alpha-One-Tango. Bring all cannons online. Target the source of the dispelling and... fire."

The runes around the hull of the airship flickered as the dispel magic hit them. Vengeance rose up into the air, swerving away and laying down a volley of cannon fire, blasting the area the mages were located at.

On the ground, the Horde surged into the critically weakened base to finish off the survivors.

Laselle grinned.

"We've had that used on us before, friend... Shields!"

This time, they had more time to prepare a defense.

"Security Chief, you are clear to do what you wish with that airship. We'll hold those cannons at bay."

He nodded and said, "I owe you and the CEO one big time, Captain. First battery, let loose. Anti-air, suppress those cannons. Move."

While the shield held, several SAMs fired from around the building... and from the street, something monstrous appeared. These were not experimental at all... they were a pair of beasts. Autocannons were usually limited to 20-30mm. These however were designed for artillery shells... 40mm gatling cannons.

And their roar was massive as they unleashed their payloads on the weapons that were raining fury down on them.

**

Teams on the ground... those that could still fight... were on the retreat. They were headed right back inside the base, firing all the way. The sniper on that roof still had a few magazines left in the box he had brought along with him, and now that the airship was distracted, there was nothing in his way of laying down that fire with renewed zeal.

The rest of R.I.O.T. Four were covering the escape of the meager forces that were left, Light Rounds coming from all directions. Their ammo was not as plentiful, but the base still had some. Hopefully.

"Continue suppressive action until all survivors are inside, then haul a** yourselves! Reload and get ready to dig in once we're successfully inside the base!"

**

The Marines were holding steady, not knowing what was in store for them.

"Fire the anti-tank rockets, now!"

As the counter-shield bullets continued raining down on the enemy force below, several rocket launchers went off, heading straight for the Elites. They weren't going down without a fight. The leader in the meantime, called for backup. After all, this wasn't their entire force...

"We need reinforcements, pronto! Heavily outnumbered, and it's getting more FUBAR by the minute! Get a couple of Cobras over here too- we're gonna need that heavy fire!"

The necromancer in the group had managed to find an errant group of Body-slaves that were making their own path of destruction through town. The necromancer linked with the ten Body-slaves, and gave them instructions. Instantly, the armored hulks moved towards where the Marines were raining down fire.

The Elites in the meantime had nearly made it to cover, when a missile struck the tail of their group. Five of them went down, instantly killed by the blast. Another two were injured, but managed to crawl to the safety offered behind a building. The remaining three were fine, and taking cover from the missile fire.

The body mages had allowed the mortal to bounce off their shields, although he had not displaced them from the air. Shortly after one of them would be struck down by a bullet caused in the confusion, while another would be grounded by a second anti-shield bullet.

The fire mages on the other hand began targeting all soldiers with a missile launcher. They hoped to clean them up before the Body-slaves arrived.

If the marines were listening carefully, they would hear a path of destruction coming straight for them. Small buildings collapsed in a pile of rubble as though a stampeding herd was moving through them. Something was coming for the marines, something big.

The Marines successfully ducked back into cover, evading the fire that was being flung their way. It looked like an even deal so far... and then they heard it. Even through that gunfire, they could hear the buildings coming down. Something was coming, and fast...

"Move your asses! Fall back to the second line, now!"

They began a hasty retreat from the building that they were holed up in, hoping to evade whatever the hell was coming for them. That airship should still be distracted, leaving a lot of room for that air support to give whatever those things were twice as much hell as they were being given.

Speaking of air support...

"Bravo Six, this is Wildfire One, we have a lock on your signal. ETA for close air support is five and counting. Two Sea Knights are inbound with reinforcements. Hold position until we arrive, over."

The commanding officer grinned. It appeared this wasn't their darkest hour yet...

"Roger that. We'll give 'em all kinds of trouble down here. Bravo Six, out."

**

Laselle decided that it was time for the coup de grace for that displacement field.

"Five of you get that field dispelled. The rest, hold the shielding steady. They're in for a world of hurt..."

With that, and only a moment's preparation, they struck again. If this didn't spell the end of that shield, they would try again. The invisible fist pounded against the airship, ramming into the Chronos Field in the hopes of dispelling it entirely...

The fire mages couldn't wait and allow the Marines to reposition themselves. As soon as they began to retreat and they were free from fire, they began to cast spells on the building. They would burn the building to the ground, beginning with all exits, they would move in. Incredible flames would burn anything it possibly could within the building, spreading like a wildfire. The marines had to die.

The Body-slaves in the meanwhile ran straight through the enclosure. They weren't going to deal with the marines. No, they had been given other instructions. The 12-foot armoured brutes headed straight for the gate control building. As soon as they arrived, they would begin to hit the front door with inhuman strength, attempting to knock the thing open.

The Elites in the meantime followed the Body-slaves. As soon as the door was open, they were going to attempt to take control of the building, or at least open the gates.

((What's the door made of, how thick is it?))

"Go go go! Haul a**, now! Rocket teams, take whatever is trying to open the gates out before they-!"

The radio transmission cut off there as the building was taken down. There were only a handful of them left now, and it would take all they had to stop those gates from opening.

"Sergeant, no!"

The doors were a reinforced steel, three inches thick. In other words, it was your standard armor plating. It wouldn't be long before they got in, but not before they got a little parting gift in the form of several shoulder-launched anti-tank rockets. The Body-Slaves and Elites would be hit with the rest of the platoon's arsenal before they could set one foot in the building.

"Take this, you bastards! Fire! Everything you got!"

The fire mages had been waiting for the marines to reappear. As soon as they targeted the Body-slaves and Elites, they rained hell down on them, literally. Fire exploded from a point just in front of the marines. Many rockets would be eliminated in the blast wave, as well as inattentive marines.

The two remaining body and bone mages however were still maintaining shields, and they had the Body-slaves covered for the most part. The odd rockets that escaped the fire storm would move through, and blast just one of the Body-slaves. An armoured frame fell, and decayed flesh and bone spilled from the frame. For a two block radius, anything living would smell a rancid odour so foul, it would induce almost instant vomitting.

With now nine Body-slaves working on the door, it would take less than ten seconds for them to get through the door frame, collapsing it inwards with a great amount of force. The remaining Elites would flood in as soon as it was all clear in the corridor. The body and bone mages themselves would float at the building, and fire mages too would move towards them, keeping a watch for any surviving marines, as well as any other threat. They would blast the reinforcements out the sky as soon as they appeared.

[QUEST]

Xehart had taken a detour after losing the soldiers which were following him. He hadn't headed back towards the bulk of the armed forces, instead, he had moved to a quieter part of the city. He was preparing to shed some bled himself, when he noticed a street vendor that just caught his eye.

Xehart quickly made his way down from the rooftop, and scampered over to where the street vendor was selling his wares. A book in particular had caught his interest, Xehart instantly pointed to it, and then looked at the street vendor.

"That book, I must have it."

His robes had seen better days, just as this beseiged city. The green cloth was thick and seemed as if he should be baking... but indeed, the vendor, with wares upon the simple table, seemed to be handling himself well with the sounds and troops.

"Knowledge so great as I've to offer," he began, "comes with a price. To gain, one must lose. What shall you lose? What do you wish to gain?"

His hands passed over books, as if the gesture would illuminate them, bring to them a glimmer. The hand motion certainly seemed to work.
