Nobody passes by without a toll! <" The rattata was entirely serious, disregarding stature or strength of those before him. He'd hold out his paw, squeaking angrily. "> Now pay up or beat down! <"
He'd get into a fighters stance as he said that, his tail waving back and forth slightly as his fur bristled. One way or another she'd have to pay up! Girl and Nidoran materialized with a "pop!", and the Abra would disappear again. "Hate psychics, hate hate hate," she groaned, eyes clamped close against the nausea. Vanni doubled over in discomfort, leaning hard on the cane. Would she ever be able to stop associating psychics with pain?
Phoebe, on the other hand, was fine. She knew well enough that her mistress would be fine, if given a minute. Carefully, she lept off her trainer's shoulder and landed lightly on the wet concrete. A poison-type had no qualms about a sewer! But strange liquids were the least of their problems. How long had they been away? Would the avaricious Rattata still be there, depending a toll?

Though as they had suspected, the Rattata was long gone, much too impatient to wait for them. why wait for one fee when you could collect two or three more in it's absence? From his point of view, they had tricked him, but oh boy they best not meet him again afterwards!
The coast was definitely clear, and Vanni was free to proceed.

Unlike the previous time she'd have heard a ghosts voice, he wasn't understandable at all. No, he just did not have the experience the old timer had, nor the self control. It would be easily visible in his gestures, the moment Vanni turned around she'd see the duskull trembling, it's red "eye" gone small as he pulled at the empty sockets with a ghostly tendril.
Had he been following her the whole time? No, couldn't be, he was much too desperate to go unnoticed for so long. Nonetheless, he was here now and she'd have to simply watch as he'd go off into rambles, continuing to tug at his empty eye socket as he did so.
"> The meet...I had a feeling he knew something...he knew, he knew everything, he always knew...he knew <" his red eye would narrow further into a point. "> An outsider! He met an outsider, I knew...I knew he knew, he didn't say...had a feeling, went to check, nothing there, he always...always right, never wrong. Never. Always... <"
"> A CHILD! HOW COULD HE?! A CHILD! <" The duskull would pull down on the socket so hard it would crack underneath, though it didn't seem to pain him at all. He would let go of his eye, however, his two whispy arms extending fully at the sides as he'd begin to glow red. Feed, he had to feed off of this child, just one taste, a nibble...he'd force the wails of agony out of her, just once or thrice or twelve times maybe! If she didn't act fast, Vanni would find herself in a painful situation!

Oddly enough, the Duskull was less disturbing to Vanni than, say, a bizarre little Gothita. Still, there was no denying the frightening effect the ghost-type had-- even if she couldn't understand the creature's wails, the tenor was enough to worry her. She began slowly, carefully backing away to let him be-- but the Duskull had other plans. As he advanced, she assessed. She couldn't out-run the wraith, not with her still-injured leg-- and running had never truly benefitted her. Acting fast, she pulled a ball from her purse, and (still backing away) called for a Pokemon. "Culann!!"
Culann's most prominent virtue was his ability to think on his paws. When it came to defense, there were few more ready and willing than the loyal Growlithe. So when Vanni flung him out into the dark sewer, the only thing standing between her and a deranged ghost, he was more than ready to do what needed to be done. Fang's bared, he lunged forward, roaring at the Duskull. /Leave, ghoul!/ He lit up the tunnel like the sun coming over the hill, bits of flame sparking off his dark orange coat. He'd get between his trainer and a threat without a second thought!

The duskull would tilt his head a full 90 degrees when he saw the growlithe. "> in the way.... <" he'd go another 90, his head upside-down though his body remained in place. "> You're in the way of...this...me...I need... <"
He'd put his hands on the side of his head, twisting it back into position. "> No matter! I will just dispose of you, too! <" the bloody red glow around him would gather at his arm-like tendrils, and in one motion pulse outwards towards the growlithe. He was starting off by letting his guard down, going after the growlithe with Dark Pulse weather it wanted to or not! /Damn right, I'm in your way,/ Culann growled as her pawed the ground. The sparking had died down a little, but he was still a glowing firecracker-- not a great habit for Growlithe to get into, mind, but considering the way his fire manifested, it perhaps wasn't surprising.
Panic having died down quickly enough, Vanni assessed her options. She'd gone for the firedog on an instinct she didn't completely understand. Phoebe was her confidant, but she felt safest with Culann. (Not to mention setting a Pokemon that knew only Normal moves against a ghost-type was folly.) What she needed to get better at, she had realized, was giving orders. It did not do a trainer well to be ordered around by her own Pokemon, or to let them do whatever they desired. "Culann, if you would, please--"
With a low snarl, the Growlithe completely ignored Vanni's voice and charged the Duskull. In maybe ways, he still thought of her as the nervous girl on the island, running from a Cranidos or a Weezing. It would not do to flee! Flames cloaking his body, he rushed forward with a Flare Blitz.

The Duskull would be hit hard, letting out a ghostly shriek as the growlithe connected with him. It would hit on his skull, the bottom part of the socket that he had cracked himself coming off entirely now, showing only the inky darkness of the edge of his own eye socket. He'd fade out for a moment, wavering between visibility and invisibility before being able to keep his solid shape, wavering low to the ground as he was too badly injured to float back up to the spot he'd been in before.
The dead do not rest, though, and the same crimson energy that had radiated from him before would come back once more, going down his arms in two rings and pulsing out at the growlithe as he tried to return the favor with another Night Shade! For a moment, Vanni had hoped this would be over quickly, and that the Duskull would sink back into the ether. But it seemed they were still in for the long run. Gritting her teeth, the little brunette snapped, "Culann! Please, listen to me and dodge!"
It was weird, hitting a ghost-- not that Culann had ever really had the opportunity to fight ghosts before. He wasn't sure what to compare it to... not solid, really, so much as running into particularly thick fog. That skull had been pretty solid, though, leaving a small bruise on the orange hound. He wasn't particularly paying attention to his trainer-- he would had dodged anyway, so why was she even bothering to give orders? He could keep her safe without her input. Culann leapt out, aiming to outspeed the dark rings and avoid the attack completely.

The pup would narrowly escape the attack, the night shade skimming the tip of Cuulans tail before hitting the floor and dying. Their opponent was visibly irritated at this, spinning in place three times as he mumbled all sorts of incoherent things. Soon enough, however, he'd come to a stop, though it wouldn't make his movements any less jittery
"> He...He's here <" the duskulls one red eye would shift from side to side. "> He...he's watching, I can feel him! He's here... <" The duskull would shiver once. "> GO AWAY! I HATE YOU! DIE...DIE! DIE! <" he'd shriek, anxiously looking around as if searching for something.

Unfortunately for little Vanni the Duskull was still very much present...not to mention a tad hysterical! ">DIE! DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!!!<" It repeated over and over again as it raised it's hands, release a wave of pitch black energy outlined in red. Night Shade, the only way it really knew how to fight, but quite the dangerous attack if it got through!
