"Well... to be honest besides Jin, who is the only of all my children who doesn't grow quickly," Kara murmured.

Though that in itself was very curious of him, she never did understand that, but he was two by now and somewhat managable (actually not at all but she'd like to think so).

"And Mia is the only 'child' really though she doesn't act like it," Kara mused, "But as Seconds go I haven't had a child or suprise Second since Lin."

Maybe she should go and fix that, but she was already expecting.

Taking the cup Lin cradled it between her hands, it warmed her fingers. Not that Lin was prone to feeling cold, but even her fingers and toes froze after a while (though the latter was her fault for not wearing socks).

"As long as I don't go sprouting wings at this stage of my life, I'm pretty sure it's all chance," Lin replied wrly.

Pretty sure, as in sometimes it was questionable even to her.

"Though it also seems as if some of them have slowed down now," Haradhel ventured cautiously. "Or is it just that the older they are, the longer they take to grow again?"

She wasn't going to suggest that Kara adopt more children again ... though she was sure Kara would find out the hard way once her own baby was born that to take on even more at that moment would not be wise.

"Even so," Timaeus pointed out, "it's uncanny, and even you can't argue with that."

He chuckled and lifted his cider to his lips. "Though if you did sprout wings, I'd have a good laugh," he admitted with a grin.

"Generally the older they are the longer between growths are, but growths are fickled things," Kara murmured, "Cindy had been a very good example of that growing up, even though she's not a Second and Miyu is too."

She looked thoughtful, she was wrong actually she realized she still had Toshiro but he never acted like a child.

"Toshiro is, but only because he was ill before I adopted him," Kara added, "It really does depend between child to child."

Lin blew across the liquid chasing off the steam that rose from it. She was going to have to agree it was uncanny for her, but it amused her still.

"Would you?" she smiled, "Well, I can't argue with it. I think Dad had been asked enough times as I was growing up where he was hiding me. It was kind of funny seeing the look on his face, then again getting almost any sort of reaction out of him amuses some people."

Like her grandfather... whom she thought was insane sometimes.

"As it does for natural babies," Haradhel agreed, thinking of Gion, and of Adonijah. The first had of course never grown physically, and the second, she was certain, still had much mental growth to go through before he could be considered an adult.

"So I supposed it's not so strange to think of, really," she concluded.

Timaeus chuckled. "Your father is so difficult to get any sort of reaction from," he grinned. "It is indeed quite amusing when one manages it. But of course, the more one manages it, the harder it is to do."

Kara thought about it, "No... it's not, I guess really it's just the growing quickly that throws people off. To know that in reality they're not that old, well for the most part. Between being here and being back home, I think ages sort of just went out the window a long time ago."

Seriously how old was Toshiro, Lin and Miyu at this point in their lives? How old was Cindy going to be by the time she came back home if she agreed to this?

It made Kara's head whirled thinking about it.

"I think he has had a lot of practice," Lin replied with amusement.

She took a sip of her cider, but one could tell from the look in her eyes that she was highly amused.

She explained, "Grandfather Long, Dad's father, is sort of like Ulrich, only more likely to get into trouble."

Haradhel chuckled softly. "Yes ... with all the traveling that your children do here ... it's a good question, how old any of them are now. Or how old you are, for that matter."

Timaeus reached over and poked Lin gently on the forehead.

"And there I see it again," he teased her. "The same look in your father's eye when he's amused and doesn't want to show it."

He sat back again and grinned. "He should be proud of you."

Kara had to seriously think about that before answering because truth be told, she didn't even know.

"Hmm... good question," she mused, "Let's see... it's been two years since meeting Elnara, so that's 26, but every time I come here I stay here for about one elvish month..."

Which was about two solar months technically speaking.

"27 maybe bordering along 28," Kara finally managed to come up with a number.

Lin blinked for a moment and blushed, though from which comment she didn't know. She knew that look, nearly all Laus had that look, Vincent had that look which had annoyed her to no end.

"I would hope so, sometimes I think I worry him more."

Haradhel couldn't help but laugh at that. She had known it would be difficult to keep track of everyone else's ages, what with all the travel that went on between the worlds, but not to know one's own age was beyond amusing.

"Though I suppose as an immortal, age becomes entirely irrelevant," she giggled at Kara. "Though ... with Donovan ... it might become more important ..."

Considering that he was, after all, human.

"I've heard that," Timaeus nodded, "but to be fair, I think it's every child's job to worry their parents. I mean, show me one person here on the ranch that didn't worry their parents while they were growing up."

He looked at her, his eyes filled with the challenge that he had dealt her.

Kara didn't have to think about it so much, she knew this was true and knew as a result Donovan was eventually going to have to retire sooner than it seemed to them.

"That is true," Kara replied, "We already know Donovan is going to retire sooner than anyone expected, but he's just waiting to find someone else to keep checking in on the ranch."

The first thought that came to mind was Aragost but Aragost never had parents nor did he ever grow up. So technically he didn't count, and besides she couldn't say anything about it. The requirement was that they had to have parents...

While she knew a few things she didn't know everyone on the Ranch so she couldn't say. Though if anyone had parents still alive the mere fact they were here on this ranch out in the middle of nowhere might be worrisome.

And she knew for a fact that all the kids her 'generation' had caused serious worry over the years.

"I can't think of anyone."

Haradhel nodded sadly. "Unfortunately," she murmured, "in your world he will not live as long as other humans, due to his time here. Elrohir and I had ... realized this a while ago ... and as much as we wish it was not so we realize that there is nothing we can do about it. We would ask that he still visit us ... but that changes nothing, and we could not ask him to sacrifice more of his life with his family just so that we can see more of him."

She only wondered how long it would be before they had to say goodbye.

"Although," she added with a hint of a smile, "if you think about it ... we've known him longer than you have. Over thirty years. Elrohir has known him longer."

Timaeus grinned and nodded in a very satisfied manner. "I rest my case. Ulani went off and nearly got herself killed when she was my age, Aliya as everyone knows always terrified Ulani ... name anyone and I can tell you how they frightened their parents."

He chuckled softly. "Actually, some of their stories are interesting. Even Alyse - she's always reading, right? Except the one time she decided that she was going to go off with Adonai without telling anyone - even him! It's amazing she came back alive ... considering he was going off to study moor cats."

The comment turned Kara's thoughts away from sober thoughts and she couldn't help but giggle at that. That was actually true, in their own way.

"That is true isn't it?" Kara replied with a smile, "But the same could be said about any one of us Gaians. It's hard to believe sometimes it has been so long here since the first time any of us had ended up the Borderlands."

"Wait moor cats?" Lin looked at Timaeus in disbelief.

She could still remember the first time she saw a moor cat, and even though it had been an illusion created by Elros, and one had never been more aware of how much a moor cat could eat her when you were no bigger than bite size. Even now she would never want to run up against a real one.

Haradhel smiled innocently. "You just said you're about twenty eight years old," she grinned. "And yet we've known you for as long as we've known Donovan. Technically, we've known you longer than you've been alive."

And then she laughed, no longer able to hold it in.

Timaeus chuckled. "I told you she was crazy. Adonai went to observe ... Alyse followed after him and got them all riled up ... they were both lucky to make it home alive. I think that might be why she spends so much time reading now instead of anything else."

Kara could not help but laugh at that, it was so bizarre but so true all at the same time even though it should never have made any sense at all.

"That is one way to play with one's head," Kara giggled, "And for us... it hasn't been anywhere near that long."

The Ranch for them had only been reaching it's year, and Kara knew they had past a year mainly because Lin was once more talking about winter and presents. Something about trying to decide between sugar cookies or candy canes even though it was just fall.

"Aiya...." Lin murmured an expression she hadn't used in a while, "While I understand the need to observe moor cats that is one creature I can gladly go without ever seeing."

She was not that insane, she could gladly claim that more or less.

"I thought Alyse was the sane one."
PostPosted: Tue Nov 25, 2008 7:24 pm

"Well we've always known that the time difference between our worlds is vast," Haradhel pointed out. "After all, when you're here for a month our time you miss what, a single day your time? That's a difference of nearly sixty to one."

Timaeus laughed at the look on Lin's face. "Well, that just goes to show you - either the ones that seem sane are the most insane, or else they've done something insane that has made them choose the sane path."

He chuckled again. "The funny part is ... both of them made it away without a scratch, and no one - not even them - knows why."

"Pretty much," Kara agreed, "But just thinking about it.. I mean. It's Fading back home, and Winter will be here soon, which means Christmas. Lin says she's making a trip again for the holiday and is looking forward not having to ride on Wish this time around."

Also Lin had a bigger allowance doing odd jobs of sorts around the home, so she had more she could spend on.

"I would find that actually really freaky in a way," Lin replied, "Normally it would be incredibly difficult to get anyway from one of those. Not that I've seen one.." she paused, "Not a real one."

She shook her head at the thought, and she thought Feng was insane sometimes.

She finally chuckled thinking about it, "Did Adonai manage to get at least some observations in before they had to bolt? While I don't like the idea, it could be very useful."
