i called Jeremy (Hawk_McKrakken for those who've never met him) on the phone just to ask him what this translated to. mrgreen ain't I a stinker?

I pretty much trust him on that translation. Ever sicne his step-grandfather died a few weeks ago, he's been more serious about study and that sorta thing so i trust his German compleeeeeetelyyyyy....... For the most part ninja

Er, small grammar question, please don't laughXD I'm learning the genitive case right now, and I get this line in my textbook saying, "The preposition von with the dative case is frequently used instead of the genitive case." And that's it. Can someone tell me why this happens? Or is just, like... when you feel like it?

I've had some issues with that too, but I think that the genitive case is only really used in relative clauses, but I could be wrong, so you may want to double check...

Off the top of my head, I can think of two other situations in which you'd use genitive. There are the genitive prepositions (wegen, (an)statt, außerhalb, innerhalb, während, trotz, usw.). Grammatically, you're supposed to say something like "Wegen des Regens schlafe ich" but my instructor mentioned that some Germans use dative with the genitive pronouns (i.e., "Wegen dem Regen") even though it's incorrect.
There's also the situation where if you wanted to say "Lord of the Rings" you could say "Der Herr der Ringe" or "Der Herr von denen Ringe" (except no one says that rofl ).
I think the disparity lies between spoken and written German. Dative replacing genitive is most common in casual German speech; however, it's not as acceptable in formal, written German. It's kind of like how the subjunctive mood is half dead in spoken English ("if I was here" vs. "if I were here").

I've not started Gen. case yet, though I get the basic idea and know the articles from various reading on websites.
Gen. case is on part 10, section 50, of my book (has 13 parts), I'm on part 8, section 39.
Prepositions that have da(r) infront of them. I'm having trouble understanding the 'dazu' one, the example they give I don't find very clear.
"Ich esse eine wurst, dazu trinke ich eine Cola."
To me it reads (literally), "I eat a sausage to (it) I drink a coke." which can't be right.
I just don't understand the usage here.
I'll get a native's explaination on the DE forum I visit, they know best.

I have issues intuitively understanding da-compounds too. Check this out:

According to that, the sentence is probably supposed to read:
"I eat a sausage; in addition to it, I drink a coke." Maybe the "in addition" is implied in the "to it"? Dunno, lemee know what the DE forum tells you. razz

Hey I also found out that ''ne' is a short form of 'eine' : 'ne Welt = a world. I'm not 100% sure but I think : "Schön für erkläre mich Ihnen das dieses ganzes Mal." = Something like : "Nice for me to explain this to you the whole time." There's a few words that I'm not familiar with though (erkläre, ganzes and the meaning of schön in suh contexts), so don't take it too literal. I could be mistaken.

... This has only secured my belief that online translators are completely awful. That, or my mum was on something when she typed the English text.
