"He asked me out," was Dari's only comment for a while. He watched Cody lose it just a little and chose to think that he was holding back just a little because he knew the fighting made Dari uncomfortable. It was interesting how important gender was to people. So if his 'truest form' had been female this would have all been fine, even though he'd have been the same old bag of slime on the inside. He turned to Cody's father, waiting for the explosion.

"WHAT?!" Nicolas' eyes snapped onto his son. "You hid this from us? We could've helped you overcome this! Is that way you stopped coming to church? Are you listening?!"
Cody's expression darkened. "I hid nothing," he said. He started filling a plate, and then another. He slid one over to his father, and then one towards his mother. He started serving up one for Dari. "Eat. So we can get out of here." He looked towards his parents. "You know. In the Bible, there's this guy called Jesus. And he's supposed to love EVERYONE, murderer or not, rapist or not, gay or not--and he says we ought to love each other the way he loves us. I love you two, despite your ignorance. But I'm not going to listen to it."

Wups. Awkward! Dari's eyes were darting back and forth between family members as he awkwardly began to eat. Religion was interesting. Humanity was full of it. Every race had some sort of notion of it. Sometimes it seemed like all it did was create hate, but of course that was the way it was used. Religion sometimes erupted as a way for men to shun whole groups of people, but some of them got it right instead.
His eyes eventually landed on Cody.
"It's okay, love," he said quietly and put a hand on Cody's thigh. He smiled to the man, then to his mother. "This is delicious, thank you." The poor woman. She must feel just awful. He saw some hope in her, though. There was more than just politeness in her, he was sure of it. She might have him now, but... well. He could hope.

Hannah spoke up, putting a hand on Nicolas' to calm him. She looked to Cody. "We just worry about you darling. We were thrilled when you said you'd found the one--but--" she hesitated, her expression becoming confused. Dari wasn't exactly what she had in mind.
Cody hadn't touched his plate. He stabbed noodles onto his fork, pried them off and stabbed more.

'The one,' huh? Dari stopped eating and turned to Cody with a sideways smile on his lips. He just looked at him a moment, and then leaned in to kiss his hair. The One. Wow.
"My nickname is pretty androgynous. I'm sorry about that." As if it was his fault. Blame Toby or, even better, blame taxonomic nomenclature! He was named after a jellyfish!

Cody looked up at the kiss and smiled slightly at Dari. "I love you," he said. "I like your nickname," he added. He'd started calling Dari by his nickname by their second date, and had all but forgotten his boyfriend's full first name.
Nicolas sputtered, but a look from his wife silenced him.

"Why, thank you," Dari said with a chuckle, and tittered at Cody's father's reaction. He laughed at odd times, that was for sure, but Cody already knew that. "I'm sorry. I really, really am. I've just never had someone hate me this much in my entire life, and we got here fifteen minutes ago."

"We don't hate you." Hannah looked to Dari. Her eyes were wide. "You're just...Not what we expected. You'll have to excuse Nicky's behavior." She sighed. She hadn't eaten, either. Her fork was still at the side of her plate. "Maybe you ought to pop home and come back at another time?"

Dari sank. They weren't even going to make it through dinner, were they? He set down his fork politely.
"Well, Ma'am, we live two hours away, so I'm going to take that to mean you'd rather we leave and not come back. It's a shame. I was very excited to meet you two. I've heard so many stories. Cody and I have gone hiking up the mountain. We've camped up there." He turned to Nicky specifically. "Sir, you mean a whole lot to your son. I want you to know that. He talks about you like you're Hercules. It's a real shame."

"No, I mean--" Hannah sighed. She stood up from the table and went over to Cody, loosely wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing the top of his head. "C'mon," she said, beckoning the two younger men out into the hall.
"I mean you can come back. Give me your number? Nicolas goes on business some days." She hated to see such a rift between her husband and son. Neither were letting up.

"What's yours?" Dari asked, his voice low. He wouldn't forget it, after all. He was acting calm and cool through his surprise, just as his training told him to. It was useful in social situations too. He was finding this with increasing frequency. For a moment he shared a look with her. He didn't like it either. Cody and his father had been so close, and he felt somehow responsible for this today. Maybe they could fix it.
"I'll text you later, after it won't be suspicious." Assuming she had a cell phone

Hannah gave Dari her number. "Alright. Safe trip home." She put a hand on Dari's shoulder, uncertain. Then she turned to Cody and hugged him.
"I'm sorry love. Call me later?" She didn't want to lose him. He'd been her miracle baby, the baby she hadn't expected to be blessed with. "I'll talk to your father."

Dari nodded and stepped aside. He let Hannah hug her son and console him, knowing that he himself was the cause of all this simply for his gender. He hadn't been lying. It was a damn shame. He took Cody's hand and squeezed it.
"Thank you," he told Hannah, and then turned to Cody and smiled. "It'll be okay. Come on." Maybe, just maybe, it actually would be.

Hannah left and let the boys be.
Cody turned and hugged Dari tightly. "Lets go home," he said. They could grab something to eat on the way home. Something particularly greasy. He led Dari to the car, sighing.

Dari hugged his boyfriend perhaps more tightly than he ever had before. Family was everything, especially for Cody, and this... was not okay.
"Let's," he agreed and headed for the car. 'Do you want me to drive?"
