My theory is that if you have a ME 1 file on your hard drive, he'll be alive actually, but if you don't, he's dead, and you make a new char. from scratch.

That could work, seeing as how they actually tie the 1st game's saved files into the 2nd one.
That's actually something that makes me think, " Why didn't other games do that already? "

Cale Darksun elvisnake The trailer for the sequel is bothering me though. I don't want them to kill Shepard off... Especially not offscreen. I'll bet he's just presumed dead or something. Same. Probably just a publicity stunt. Someone on another forum had a theory that he could've been sent to the Perseus Veil, and either hasn't returned yet or was tagged as "MIA" so that no one would suspect where he was.

I can't believe I missed out in a brief Mass Effect discussion.
Mass Effect has a large amount of freeroam, and it's not just "You can go here, here, and here to do X job"
You can explore a large amount of the milky way, including uncharted planets, as well as derelect ships ((while they are repetitive, there's only a few, and often times, you're sent to that area to find said ship because it disappeared))
Shepard as an alien?
