Cody smiled. "I used to take it into the bathroom and turn off all the lights just to see it glow. It'd be fun to fix it up."

Dari shook his head. "Have we never been to Lori's house? It's two blocks down. We could walk there." He smiled then and nodded.
"Okay. So we'll take it home and fix it, how's that sound? It'll be fun."

"We should. He seems like a great guy." Cody had liked him. "Alright," he agreed, giving Dari a smile. "We can paint the stars together."
"Boys? Dinner's ready." Hannah opened the door slightly and peered in.

Dari tucked the book under his arm, knowing they may not have a chance to go back into Cody's room, and kissed Cody on the temple. Then his mother peered, and Dari smiled and nodded. Why did she seem to afraid to look in? Were they really so ignorant about gay people?
"Yes, ma'am." When in doubt, kill them with kindness.

Dinner? Cody had hoped his mother would've forgotten their presence. Apparently not. So much for enjoying the rest of the night. "We'll be out in a second," he promised.
She went down the hall.
Cody looked to Dari. "Don't let dad scare you," he advised. "He likes acting like a tough guy. But he's the guy who took me up to see flowers every year." Tough guy indeed.

In all of the hubbub, Dari had totally forgotten that this was the same dad who took Cody camping. This was the same dad who had first discovered what had become their spot. How strange it was when you met the people you had a predetermined expectation of...
For a moment Dari looked stunned, and then he smiled and nodded to Cody.
"I'm a federal agent. I don't scare easily."

"He scared me," Cody admitted. "So maybe I should take my own advice." He took Dari's hand and started leading him down the hall. "C'mon. Mom's nearly as good a cook as Toby is."
Hannah looked up when the two entered the dining room. "I made casserole," she offered.

Dari gave Cody's hand a squeeze. He had to be strong here. He had to do it for Cody. He came out with Cody, the book still under his arm.
"It smells wonderful," Dari said, offering a winning grin. He knew this woman hated him, or at least resented his existence, but that was no excuse to be an a*****e without being given a reason to be. This woman had given birth to his love, after all. Without her, there would be no Cody.

"Yeah mom, looks great." Cody returned Dari's squeeze and looked over the table.
"There's dessert, too, for after--" as she said this, she looked sternly to her son.
"I don't think we'll be staying," Cody said. "I promised Dari's family I'd have him home by eight; he's got to be up early for that government job."
Nicholas perked at that. "What do you do, then? For the government?"

Dari laughed slightly. Obviously that was meant as a joke, right? His mother wouldn't actually believe Dari had to be home by any time... Just a set-up, right? For the government comment? It was too bad he couldn't boast.
"Uh. If you'll forgive me, Sir, I can't really say." Of course there was only one thing that implied nowadays, but Dari was just fine with that. People could know and he didn't feel like a bad agent for spilling the beans.

"He's like 007," Cody said, then, smiling at Dari. "Like I said, he graduated from Harvard--" he was interrupted.
"So. Like a spy?" Cody's father was frowning. "Are you using my son for information?"

Dari laughed again and nudged Cody in the ribs with his elbow. So much for 'classified information!'
"Not at all like a spy, Sir. I represent America on an international level. It's just that most of what I work with is classified, so I can't divulge specific information. I'm a federal agent. As is my brother."

"What?" Cody gave Dari a smile. "I didn't give anything away."
"Hm." Nicolas didn't want to admit being impressed with this man. After all, he'd corrupted his only son!
"His car doesn't do anything like the cars in James Bond, though," Cody said, and gave another smile to Dari.
"Hm," Nicolas said again. "I don't want you seeing Cody anymore."

"No, or Batman," Dari laughed, and then one brow shot up. That was so ridiculous! Really?! He turned back to Cody's father. "I'm sorry about that, Sir. I love your son. I'm not going to be leaving because you don't approve."
He wasn't being snarky, just blunt.

Nicolas' brow furrowed. His expression slowly warped from forced calm to irritation. "I want you to stay away from him," he said. "I don't know what ideas you've put into his head, but this is ridiculous. We didn't raise--"
Cody had lost interest in the food on the table. His expression was cold. "You didn't raise me to be gay." He finished. He huffed, and tried to take a calming breath but it came out just as angrily. "You don't know anything. I love Dari with all my heart. Its no different than you and mom! Or anyone else. It's love!"
