How funny it was that Cody stood there talking about appearances and understanding them. Dari felt briefly guilty, and then wrapped his arms around Cody and hugged him back hard.
"I've heard stories. I always figured you were out." He smiled then and kissed Cody softly. "They just don't want to. Maybe we can change their minds." it was always better to be hopeful.
"So this is your childhood room?"

"I never told them. By the time I realized my preferences, I'd figured they already had to know." He returned the kiss, and smiled at Dari. "Yeah," he said, gazing around his room. "There's a bunch of junk from when I was a kid in the closet." Action figures, space related books, alien related things... He opened the closet door.

Dari nodded. Well. He'd only had to come out because he'd been completely asexual previously, and he was sure if he'd just started going to gay clubs and dating guys Toby wouldn't give a damn, but he'd know. It was like the game they played with strangers. Tell them you're a werewolf and they'll laugh with you, because they don't want to believe their reality was strained. Cody's parents didn't want a gay son.
All that aside, though, he grinned broadly at the open closet. He saw galaxies and alien figurines and chuckled.
"Oh. So this is a life-long nerddom, I see."

"Yeah, I told you," Cody said, and smiled at Dari. "Started with Star wars I guess, and it never really stopped. My dad hated it. He used to say aliens were fallen angels and I shouldn't be so interested in them." He shrugged, and bent to take a few action figures out of his box. He handed one to Dari.
"He's wrong. I met an angel at the park."

"Fallen angels, hm?" He'd come from a little further than that. He chuckled and took the figure. When Cody made his usual heartfelt albeit cheesy comment, Dari leaned over and kissed his cheek.
"Maybe I'm an alien," he said, and flipped the action figure's arm up and down. "It looks like you had a good childhood." He wished he'd had one himself.

"Maybe you are," Cody looked at Dari in teasing suspicion. "Maybe I am. I might've come down to earth as a baby, and my parents never told me. Like superman." He kissed Dari's cheek.
"You know, that ancient aliens weirdo with the crazy hair says we're all descendants of aliens."

"He also looks like he's being slowly abducted himself. Or worn as a costume. His hair gets stranger and stranger..." It was impossible to work in the field Dari and his family did without coming across some honestly bizarre and hilarious footage 'just in case.' Not much frustrated Lori as much as Ancient Aliens, and he wasn't even an ambassador!
"I think where you come from is less important than who you are," he said, and reached up to gently take a book from a leaning row. He flipped it open and went to a random page, action figure still in his hand. Hm. Which galaxy had he come from? He knew its shape, but he had no idea how far away it was, or how they had gotten so close. He was a strange amalgamation of other people's memories.

Cody laughed at that. "Yeah. Yeah, he does. Maybe they just want his hair!"
He sat on the twin bed in the room and indicated Dari should do the same. "Agreed. Look where I came from." He wrinkled his nose. "Religious crazies who won't accept their son's met the love of his life."

"His eyes too. They've been losing sanity for years now," Dari said with a grin. He turned to Cody then, then replaced the book but took the figure with him as he sat beside him.
"Don't say that. They raised you to be an amazing man. Religion is stifling for some people. They don't want you to be gay, so maybe tonight will be a little awkward." He nodded out toward the bedroom door and shrugged. The fourth dimension in Cody's parents was... odd. Not necessarily good, but it was only one extra dimension, never more. There was only so much he could see and hear. "They love you. I got lucky. My family was all for empowerment. Sexual preference was never a big deal." Not with Toby, not with his own biological parent organisms. Heck, he'd bet even Toby's parents would have been cool with it, but it was all luck. "Besides, I'm here for you, and so is my family, whether you want them or not." He reached an arm around Cody and pulled him close, then kissed the top of his head.

"Maybe he's being possessed by an alien who's trying to confuse us by telling us all ancient cultures were in some way caused by aliens."
"Its already past 'a little awkward'," Cody sighed. "Yeah, you're here," he agreed, smiling as he was pulled close. He leaned against him. "I was so excited for them to meet you. I was finally feeling confident in taking that step--but hell. I don't think we'd ever get their blessing, if we got married."

Dari smiled and leaned back against Cody. Marriage. Imagine.
"I was excited to meet them too. Maybe we can change their minds, in time." He'd already said something to that effect, but it seemed important to repeat. "I love you, Cody. That's what matters. I love you, and you love me."

"Yeah," Cody agreed, but he doubted it. His parents were stubborn. He kissed Dari's cheek. "Your family approves though," He said, holding up the key Toby had given to him earlier. He took out his keyring. "So it doesn't get lost," He said, and attached it.
He took a book from his bedside table and opened it. "Look, this one has pictures of stars and galaxies. They used to in the dark, but I bet the paint's too old now."

Dari nodded. "You're the second person to ever get The Key," he said, wiggling his finger mystically. "Everyone's always invited, but nobody gets The Key." He watched Cody pop it on his ring and felt that Toby had made the perfect move on the perfect day. Nobody knew it would end up like this, but the new key seemed to give Cody some confidence.
"Oh?" Dari reached over and cupped his hands around the book and put his eye to it. "Mm. Looks like it. We could fix that, though." If they ever had their own place, Dari knew exactly what he was going to do with the bedroom.

Dari's words had Cody grinning. He hadn't thought Toby liked him much, not at first at least, with his regular texts checking up on Dari. "I'm guessing the other person is his fiancee."
"Really? Do you know where to get the right paint?"

Dari waved his hand. "Maia doesn't count. She moved in pretty quickly. You and Lori, and he's known Lori for... 'teens of years."
He nodded then and smiled. "Yeah. It's easy to find. I'm at the craft store all the time. I actually just bought some a couple of weeks ago for a project of mine."
