To this Wolfe yawned once more, "That's silly," he said decisively. "You live for what you love the most, don't you? You follow your music. That's important. That's what you should be doing. How can that be proxy? Dreaming's where... I don't know, it's something. Kingsley could probably tell me, but he'd probably tell me wrong just 'cause." Yawn. "You don't like dreaming?"

"I don't like feeling like I'm missing something," Roman shrugged. "And that happens very frequently when I wake from dreams... as if in dreams I hold the key to what would make me feel as though I had everything." And... that was the truth, wasn't it?

"So who is this 'Kingsley', anyway?" the violinist changed the subject abruptly, realizing that there was part of him that snarled with... a foreign emotion... even though he had no right to.

Distractions, distractions. Jump from one topic to the other--are we supposed to keep an eye on both or just leave one altogether for good and never?

"Somebody recent," Wolfe yawned negligently. "Real mean when he wants to be, don't think he means it though. Kinda weird... in a different way from you and me, not that you and I are weird in the same way but he's... really weird."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 4:36 pm

Roman tensed slightly but didn't comment except to shrug. 'Somebody recent'...? It's only to be expected, isn't it? "I see." The boy kept his voice carefully neutral as he glanced about before pulling himself to his feet again, keeping him movements slow and careful.

"You're moving funny," Wolfe said suddenly, having been more silent than was normal the entirety of the time it took for Roman to stand (which had seemed, strangely, like an eternity).

Pause. He turned, looked back at the Nest, "You hear it too or something? Not sure what it was... Something else? I thought it went away."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 4:46 pm

"Hear what?" Roman asked, blinking. Wolfe always had had sensitive hearing... "I didn't hear anything," he murmured, very much unwilling to admit why he was 'moving funny'. After all, it didn't matter, right? Of course not. These things happened-- Roman should have learned that by now...

Wolfe sat up, waving a hand as if to say 'forget it' without words, though anyone who knew him even marginally well knew there would be words to accompany the movement anyway. "Thought there was something funny going on back in the place--Nest it's called, right?--anyway, there was something... on the air, not like a normal sound. Something different."

He frowned slightly, "So that's not it, what's wrong?"
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 4:53 pm

"'Wrong'?" Roman blinked, attempting to feign misunderstanding. It was just Roman's luck though, that he still had never managed to learn how to lie convincingly. Strange, for someone who worked in a theatre for so much of his life, but true. "Why... would something be wrong?"

Wolfe raised an eyebrow in a sort of skepticism that he had not posessed those hundred years ago. "And now you sound funny too. You sick? I've been wondering whether or not we can get colds.... sorta forgot how they worked, it's been so long. It's just always there's someone and then there's someone sick and you don't know when it happens or how quickly it happens so you know maybe it'd be fun to experiment with that kind of stuff though I hear getting sick makes you pretty miserable--uh oh... you're not sick, are you?"
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 5:00 pm

"No, I'm not sick," Roman answered honestly as he moved towards the Nest carefully. At least, he wasn't sick like Wolfe was talking about. Something inside of him was most confused, thrown into this turmoil and darkness that he couldn't see through...

Shaking his head in disagreement, Wolfe stood to follow closely, staying that half-step behind in case the worst (in his mind) should occur, in other words, unforeseen fainting spells. "That's not true," he countered insistently to Roman's answer, despite the undertones of simplicity he'd heard within it. "Something's wrong."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 5:07 pm

"I'm not sick, Wolfe," Roman repeated himself, rolling his eyes slightly as he made his way inside and to his room. Once inside the sparcely decorated enclosure, the boy carefully, lovingly removed his violin from its case, needing the music right now so very much.

Why did it still matter so much? It shouldn't. It shouldn't. No one held onto things from a century ago-- not things like this that had been so short and ended so abruptly... so why did Roman? Why...?

Through the Nest, through the halls, Wolfe counted footsteps. Measured, if pained. Something was wrong, he knew it. Why didn't anyone believe him these days?

He stopped at the door to Roman's room, feeling the unspoken imperative not to intrude and settling for standing there, arms crossed as he watched the boy with that violin he so treasured, face creased in a slight frown of consternation and befuddlement both. Still in the habit of not bothering to hide emotions...

He didn't want to bother, didn't want to interrupt... but he was only so intuitive. There was only so much you could learn without invading...

The first stroke of bow to strings sounded so pained as Roman began his song, letting the notes fly through the air faster and faster as the boy lost himself in the music, the sound saying everything he could not-- would not say...

It'd been a very, very long time. And in that very, very long time, Wolfe had learned a lot more about music. More precisely, about musicians: how the music-makers speak more fluently, fluidly, in melody and rhythm and syncopation and this was... this was...

This hurt. In that twinging, nothing's going right sort of way.

Hurt in ways he remembered.

But he hadn't heard them...

Hadn't heard since...

"...Sorry..."
