I've noticed that if genestealers are up front, they tend to get shot down quickly, but if you hang em back with something else, like a big squad of gaunts, they aren't as big of a fire magnet. When they do get into combat, they rock. Rending on terminators or a land raider is awesome.

This probably would've worked if I hadn't been fighting tau. Next time I'll make my gaunts cheaper, get leaping warrirors and proxy another fex. That'll learn him.

I am a brand new Warhammer 40k player, and I'm just starting to amass a Tyranid army. I was curious as to whether or not Lictors are worth a hefty 80 points (I could get 16 more spinegaunts for that price). They sound great for disrupting enemy units in cover though.

Also, any good army builds with strengths and weaknesses would be appreciated.

Lictors are probably only useful for their re-rolls on reserves rolls and the scare factor which forces your opponent to keep his tanks away from rocks in the middle of the battle feild.

Gaunts are really good for screening your better units (Genestealers).

Genestealers in close combat can take pretty much anything except Seer council Monoliths and other skimmers.

Zoanthropes with warp blast provide a really good way of beating marine saves, and they have on occasion been know to assult (and almost win) against space marine characters.

Hive Tyrants can also benefit from the magic of warp blast and then have close combat biomorphs so they can shoot while they advance.

Warriors are a good choice against armies that don't get great saves especially with deathspitters (blast), they can also take out light vehicles especially land speeders.

I have yet to find a use for rippers, the one game i took 5 bases of them i discoverd that they couldn't capture points and they were all that was left of my force (so it ended as a draw).

Carnifexes seem way too slow but do provide an unstoppable hulking smashy guy, (good for killing necrons).

Hormagants i have yet to use but i suspect that they'd do well against something with a bad save.

Gargoyles are really really fast and can glance armour 10.

Raveners provide a fast and deadly paper tiger type unit, be sure to keep them out of harms way because their save is horrible.

Biovores look as bad as they are.

And Broodlords can't fleet or scout which makes them a bit slow for getting into close combat.

Those are my veiws on nid units anyway.

I think that giving Scuttle to Genestealers is a waste of my points myself. I go with a small squad of ten with no upgrades, and a squad of 5 with BL with Armor upgrade. I like the little bugs. 40 HormaGaunts, and 30 Gargoyles.

Hmmm... I myself Like the Lictors, but find that I can never fit them into my army list anymore. With the new rules, it kicks a lot of a** to beable to be placed in any area terrain. But, because it is using DeepStrike rules, it can die before it even kills anything. I find that they are useful, but not always worth the points. Depends what you take them against. Guard is best, Tau is next. But That's just my opinion. I don't make lists for fighting specific armies. I just have my 1700 point list, and That's all I will have till I decide to change it or it begins to lose alot.

My opinions of infiltrate are not good, but thats probably just because we always seem to have no good locations for infiltrating due to the type of terrain we use.

True... Infiltration does have a lot of good new rules to it, but if your opponent places properly, you may only get an extra 6-10 inches ahead of your army. But I myself use this to my own advantage, because now I can rush my gaunts ahead without fear of them outrunning my synapes. I see it as a security blanket for my smaller bugs.

Nope, and we won't... Old one Eye i.e. Special Characters were just too daft an idea for Tyranids. Why on earth would the Hive mind experiment with just one creature? The new 'Death Leaper' was originally a special character and now its a unit which makes a lot more sence to me and the design teams...
Then again i'm not too keen on the Death Leaper really... you lose rending!

Also for starting a Tyranid army might i suggest your two compulsary troops choices are a brood of 20-30 spinegaunts and a brood of 20 Hormagaunts with Toxin sacs, it works quite well as a nice core to your army and my personal one has 60 hormagaunts and 90 spinegaunts. (it works well for me razz )
Oh and flying rippers ROCK!!!

Its probly the best way to use a Broodlord, Inflitrate him up with his stealers and use him to extend the synapse web

I faced like 4-6 huge squads of Stealers with scuttlers, and a 12" deployment zone....on a 48" tabel, and I deployed at my max range too. so what basically puts us within 24 inches of one another, scuttle move-6, accutal move-6, Fleet of foot gave him like 6, so I was pretty much assulted first turn crying
