"Its a compliment," Maia assured him. "I like cats."

"We could try one in a bit. There's nothing too frightening, is there? No ghosts?" She asked, rather hopefully. She sat at the laptop and began to play.

"I'm sure Seamus is very pleased," Toby replied, then got up to stir the pasta and remained by the stove.

"I'm sure I have something with no ghosts and no gore. I must. Snake is fine for now." He watched her play, and by the time her game was done the timer went off and Toby hailed her from the kitchen. "I'm going to cook the chicken if you want to watch!"

"Of course. He's smart enough to know I only show appreciation to the best of cats." If Toby had called her to the kitchen before the snake had slammed into the wall (with a sound of disgust from Maia) she would have lost interest in the game. She moved from her seat and made her way to the kitchen. "Sounds good, Dari. Let's play a game with no ghosts. You can set it up if you like!"

She went to Toby's side. "Did you keep the pasta from burning?" she asked. She peered into the pan. "You did!"

"He also knows math, which is far above and beyond normal cats," Toby joked. Dari nodded as Maia left the area and began to search through his installed programs.

"It won't burn, but it won't be ready yet. Alright. We're going to season the chicken just a little." He named each seasoning as he added it. Into the pan the little chunks went. "You have to cook them into they're not pink at all, and not squishy any more. Raw chicken is bad news. You have to flip them and get both sides." He offered her the spatula. He could always check the chicken before calling it good, and he wouldn't leave her completely to her own devices.

A gentle thumping could be heard thundering down the hall. It passed by. Toby heard it only due to his enhanced inhuman hearing. Dari felt it more than heard it, having no working ears. They shared a glance. Down the hall there was a strange noise, like a child crying or an angry beast.

"Naturally. He's fae, so he has the gift of superior intelligence." She watched Toby's every move, this was something she truly was interested in learning. And unlike the forms Lori had given her earlier, it kept her interest.

"Raw meat makes people sick," Maia said, with a nod to show she understood. She was handed the splatula, and asked, "How do I know when to flip them?"

Her attention was torn away from the chicken though, at the noise. She offered Toby the spatula. Was it a monster? "I'll go investigate," she said. She went to the door, opening it.

"Just check them every so often. When one side is done, flip. Don't worry, I'll help." Good, so she new raw meat hurt people, because raw fish didn't hurt seal-form selkies by any means. Maybe they should go for sushi while she was here. He did sometimes treat clients. The in-between time was hard.

Both men stood still, watching Maia. It would be almost impossible to get into the apartments without authorization, so who was it?

The door opened and the sound came again. Four units down there sat a large lump on the floor.

Maia investigated the lump, bending down next to it. "Oh, I'm sorry!" she said. "I didn't tell you I was staying at Dari's apartment tonight." She moved to pet him. "You came all this way looking for me, didn't you? We were just talking about how great you are, too. My favorite of all cat sidhes."

She stood. "Come on. We have chicken cooking and there's plenty! Dari won't mind you sleeping over, too."

Seamus began purring without being touched. Yes, he forgave her, because he was the best cat sidhe. At the mention of chicken the cat perked and walked casually with Maia back to the apartment. Toby turned the chicken. Dari smiled.

"Oh, you b*****d. That was a hell of an entrance," Toby said. Seamus meowed at him and headed for the kitchen.

"Hello again," Dari greeted the cat, and took up his laptop to play a game of Snake himself.

"He was looking for me. I told him where my apartment was so he could come visit if he liked, and he came! He found me." She beamed, petting Seamus. "You had the boys all scared," she informed him. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you where I'd be. Tomorrow I'll be in my own apartment. Maybe I'll be able to get you some fish by then."

She followed him into the kitchen. "He's the best cat ever," she declared. He'd come all this way just to see her!

"Ah, alright," Toby nodded. Seamus sat by his feet and they shared a look, then he demonstrated to Maia that one side was done. "So this. This is done. Any more brown and we'd be heading into 'overcooked' territory." He was glad to hear that Maia planned to stay in her own apartment from now on.

Dari finished the game and shook his head. "I lost."

"Oh, looks like you did win."

Meow!

"This is people food."

Meooow!

"I'll think about it."

"Darker brown means it's burnt," Maia nodded in understanding. She was delighted that Toby was taking the time to teach her. At least how to make chicken pasta.

"I told you. I won checkers, too. Now you'll have to try to beat me!"

"Don't worry Seamus. I'll share with you," Maia assured the cat, when it sounded like Toby wouldn't be sparing a piece for him.

Toby turned the meat, cut through the largest piece and found it cooked-through. He removed it from the pan on the knife, blew on it a few times, and dropped it to the floor for Seamus, who lunged at it and accepted it immediately. Toby imagined that cat food had to get boring after a while. He also wasn't the only one to feed the cat sidhe things he shouldn't have. He had a soft spot for the creature.

"So. For pasta. You can just check it with a taste," he explained, scooping a bit out with the spoon, "but the other option is more fun." He flung the hot noodle at the wall. It stung. "Hey-o! We have a winner! He nudged the cabinet beneath him with his foot. "Can you grab the strainer? A bowl with all kinds of holes in it." He peeled the noodle off of the wall and gave that to Seamus as well.

If there had been a point system for Maia's affection, Toby's score would have gone up by fifty points.

Her attention was back on cooking. "I like the second option better," she said, grinning at him. "So Its ready? Is the sauce? Can I mix it?" She bent down and opened the cabinet indicated. She pulled out the strainer. A bowl with holes. "To separate the water from the noodles?" she guessed.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 27, 2015 10:15 pm

"Eh, so do I," Toby agreed with a grin, "Yup! Exactly that. I'll do it." He didn't want any scalding injuries on their newest client under his supervision. "Here." He offered a normal spoon, scooped up a bit of sauce, and offered it to Maia, then removed the chicken from the heat. "Taste."

That being done he grabbed the strainer, set it in the sink, and poured the noodles and water in. He shook the strainer until it stopped dripping and then turned to Maia. "Are we good?"

Maia took the spoon offered to her, blew on it to cool it off, and tried it. "Its good!" she announced. "Did you make it? Can you show me, sometime?" She hoped to learn enough to be able to cook for herself, when she was on her own.

"Seamus is allowed to visit me, isn't he? One of the research people said they didn't know if residents could keep pets. But he'd just be visiting."
