"Do they seriously give out awards here." She deadpanned, accidentally taking his joke seriously. "Like, I swear to God, if there's perfect attendance I'm going to scream."

He snort-laughed at the idea as they moved onward. "This award goes ta all the nice lil' hunters tha' didn' skip duties fer a whole year," he announced, holding up an invisible trophy.
Apparently that was enough to enrapture the pool, as he was allowed to walk through unscathed. Maybe it wanted the award?

She did not reach for the trophy. The vines took her back, tripping her up so that she was a few steps behind him before she made it as well.
"I would not win that award." She admitted sullenly. "I sleep in. A lot."

"Sleep's real important, though," he argued seriously. "I wouldn' win it either. Accidentally napped through a half a s**t last week, so now I gotta do double duty tomorrow." Well, assuming something didn't send him to the infirmary between now and then.
There was still a bird there eyeballing them. Dawson had a choice few words for it, but scarabs nearly crawled into his mouth when he tried.

Now that she'd returned to the start, she checked the hat to make sure it was secure after the wave knocked her off her feet, and trudged forward. The vines whipped her right back into place, forcing her to step backwards into a pile of sticky mud. Her legs were gripped firmly in place, even as more vines tried to pull her away. If they pulled any harder, they would tear her apart.

This went on over and over, each time she tried. Vines pulled, mud pulled, and Maebe felt like a piece of gum, stretched to her limit.

Eventually, the gum popped.
Maebe's last conscious breath was that of a growl as she pulled herself out of the biggest vat of slime she'd found in her entire time at the temple. When she was free, she fell face first into the ground, and realized there wasn't any energy left inside of her to stay awake.
So she just laid there, drifting between consciousness and unconsciousness, until someone told her it was time for school again.

Maebe taught Dawson a very important lesson, the last time they were here. The lesson was, she did not give things back.
When she returned, she was still wearing the Supreme hat, and she pointed out the guardian hiding behind the tree waiting for them right after he cheered. Immediately she ran out to fight it, thinking the hat would give her good luck.
She was wrong.

No one would ever know that she'd slept in the hat. It covered her eyes, and left her in a darkness she was not crippled by.
But the constant reminder had her distracted, and the distraction continued as she chipped away harmlessly at the lion in front of her.
