"Oh." Andarien tapped the end of his pencil lightly against the desk, staring at Miyuki thoughtfully and frowning slightly. He looked as though he was trying to decide whether or not to ask her something, and finally he came to a decision.
"Mi, I have to ask you ... why do you keep going from one thing to another before you really master anything?" he asked her, confused. "I mean ... just about the only thing I've seen you finish is the quiver you did for Ada. You still haven't tested your binding scrolls to see if they work, you said you were going to try make a house for us with rooms and everything that packs away like a tent, you talked about ... preservation spells and ... and all kinds of things, but you haven't actually done any of it. Why spread your focus even further before you finish those?"
He didn't want her to stop learning, but from his point of view, she had only actually accomplished a few select things, and most of the things she did, she hadn't tested. He was just worried that she would spread herself too thin and not end up really knowing how to do anything particularly well.

Miyuki blinked for a moment, and thought about it because it was a fair question to ask. Even though she was as good at runes as she was going to get, everything else was experimentation and a willing to learn her limits.
If there were any when it came to runes.
"Well... three reasons, the first is, no matter what I'm working on, it's still within the realm of runes. The binding scrolls, the home, the preservation spells, they're all runes that I just want to experiment with because I think they'll be useful or they interest me."
She scratched her cheek and then laughed, more at herself than anything else.
"And in truth they're not the only ideas I've thought of over months. They're just the ones I'm currently focused on."
Runes for lights, runes to make things stay very cold or very hot, runes that could track, runes that could protect, there were so many uses for runes she probably should start making a list of what she wanted to do.
"The second is I'm use to jumping from thing to thing. When I was little, that is what I did a lot of, mainly in languages, math and writing, but those three I use but don't need to learn in lessons as much anymore so I guess I'm trying to fill up time."
She smiled sadly and then finally said.
"And finally, I think it's time I learn some sort of offensive magic. I'm getting good with the battle fans, but I won't ever be like Auntie Feng and frankly I don't have the skill like Mom does. I'm very much I think like Grandma, that is Grandma Kara, if I fight it might be best through magic"
The young kitsune shrugged her shoulders as if to admit defeat.
"I actually hoped that if I messed around with illusions enough I could come up with a few tricks enough to scare people into thinking twice in attacking, but I know that I might not always get that chance... I don't like the idea of using magic to hurt people, but I would be stupid not to learn in case anything happens again."

"But I don't mean just thinking about things," Andarien frowned, trying to think how he could explain himself. "I mean ... yeah, it's smart to learn something offensive, I'll give you that. But what I mean is ... all you've done is experiment, but not finished much. That would be like ... like me. Take me and my gears and stuff for example."
He gestured towards the gears on the desk and his notebook. "I've got all kinds of designs in here, but if I never make them, the designs are pointless. I'll never know if they really work, or if they need adjustment. I could design lots of things - water systems, machines to do work for people ... but if I never actually make them, then how do I know that they'll actually work? What have I actually accomplished? Nothing really. I really don't think I should move on to bigger or different things until I at least know that what I'm doing works, until I'm successful in making what I've designed."
Maybe it wasn't the best example, but despite understanding that Miyuki did want to learn something offensive, he did feel that she was so scattered in what she was doing that she would never finish anything.

Miyuki tilted her head a bit, he did have a point. However, she also thought he was missing the point. Sometimes, you didn't have the luxury of working on just one thing at time. Granted, she could do that with runes, but that was another matter completely.
"True, and I do have in mind which of the current projects has priority to test and make into reality," Miyuki replied.
She could test the binding scrolls at any time, she just needed something to test on, and the preservation runes had priority otherwise it was going to be hard going up north.
"But this kind of learning, I can't put off until I'm done everything else. I never know when I'm going to need that," Miyuki finished.
Though if he was so worried about it, Miyuki thought to herself. Maybe part of it was, Andarien didn't realize how close she was to being done or just being done.
"Though... since we have time today, maybe I have find targets for those bind spells. Though I might have more luck finding a piece of fruit to experiment on the preservation seals instead. I don't think anyone wants to be on the receiving end of that...."
She knew that the spell itself would activate, she had used them on inanimate objects (mainly trees and rocks), but she didn't know how strong they were because that required something living that moved. Well, actually she knew it worked, she just didn't know it's strength.

Andarien brightened up when he heard that Miyuki was going to test some of her first experiments.
"Maybe you can try the binding spells on the guards, or on the Pokemon or something!" he suggested. "Maybe we can ask when someone comes and tells me if there's a forge I can use."

She wondered if that would freak the guards out, but Miyuki nodded and smiled anyways.
"We'll see, we might get volunteers," Miyuki replied, "And if all else fails we might have to recruit the Pokemon."

"Maybe if they don't come soon, I'll go and ask," Andarien decided. "Hey, Mi, come here for a sec, will you?"
He pointed at some of the designs in his book. "Which one do you like best?"
There were three designs on the page he was pointing at. All three were pocket watches, and all three had hidden compartments in the backs of them. One had a floral design, one had a dragon that looked suspiciously like Kasal and Uruloki, and the third had a design of Asian-style fans such as Lin had somewhere in her bag and some birds.

"Sure," Miyuki got up to take a look over Andarien's shoulder.
They were all very pretty she thought, and had also thought if Andarien hadn't been such a good clockwork maker, he might be a good artist. Her eyes though, gravitated towards the third design.
She tapped that on that one, "That one."

Andarien nodded and wrote Miyuki's name next to it, then looked up at her.
"What kind of designs do you think Nana and Ada would like?" he asked. "I know they tell time by the sun but it would be nice if they had watches too, don't you think? Or ... or do you think I maybe should make them something else that they might use more?"

"Watches are a perfect idea," Miyuki assured him.
Though that did beg the question, what would their mother and ada like?
"As for designs... maybe something with a phoenix for ada and..."
She had to really think about it, their mother owned a lot of butterfly things, and so did their grandmother. Snowflakes and butterflies had almost come to represent the Winters in a way.
"Maybe something like snowflakes or butterflies or both for Nana?" she suggested.

The phoenix would be simple enough for their father, Andarien had seen pictures of them everywhere and Earendil had one tattooed on his shoulder; but there was plenty he could do with butterflies and snowflakes.
"Maybe ... something like this for Nana?" he suggested, his pencil strokes light and smooth as he tried a sketch. He tried a butterfly taking up a small area in the center with snowflakes around it, but he didn't like that the butterfly was so small.
"Or ..." He tried a second one, this one with the butterfly taking up most of the space, and with snowflake patterns on its wings.

"The second one is better I think," Miyuki pointed to the second drawing.
The pattern on the wings were cute, and it allowed for the butterfly to be bigger than in the first drawing.

Andarien smiled. "All right, I thought so, too. Then something for Ada ..."
He did a rough sketch of the Aldrich phoenix, then made slight adjustments so that it would fit a balanced area of the watch's face.
"There," he nodded. "Now there's really nothing I can do until I get to a forge. I need a fire to make the moulds for them, and then to measure out the metal ..."
And then of course to make the necessary gears and other parts.

"And for that we need to get word back, Kyrie did say she would ask," Miyuki murmured.
Waiting though was hard, since it put everything else on hold. Andarien needed a forge, and Miyuki needed new clothes and someone(s) to test her binding runes on.

Andarien sighed and looked around. He had finished his designs, so there really wasn't much more for him to do at the moment.
"Do you think it would be all right if we explored a bit?" he asked Miyuki after a moment. "I don't know when they're going to get to us, and I'd like to walk around a bit."
