I still haven't found my feet...

Mrs Sullivan watched him, but he made no movement save for the fingers holding the knife. Unwilling to provoke him, she simply set down a cup for him and sat down. Her little daughter hadn't moved either, eyes fixed on the wood.

After another minute, Patrick turned the carving around slowly. "Here..." he held out the girl's likeness to her, the knife held far away from the child.

Accepting the gift, the little girl turned to her mother. "M-mummy... it's me!" she squealed, proudly holding it up high.

Patrick placed the knife down carefully, then stood. "I'll go find another few pieces of wood so I can make your son one as well - I don't want to create strife..." he mumbled, hands shaking as he stared at the floor.

Next thing he knew, Mrs Sullivan had embraced him from the side and was gently pushing him back into his seat. "Nonsense. You need to sit down first, drink a cup of tea - then I'll let you look for more wood."

Once he'd taken a sip of tea that was tasteless to him, the lady of the house gently shooed away her daughter and smiled at him. "Want to tell me what happened?"

Thinking as quickly as he was able, Patrick opened his mouth:
"I was out collecting wood for work - dead wood, I won't cut down trees - and..." he gulped. "One nearly fell on me. I think it was diseased or something... but it reminded me what I might lose and...!" he stopped, covering his eyes.

Mrs. Sullivan went to his side and hugged him in a motherly fashion, unknowingly making him smell of woman. "You poor man! You just sit here, and I'll make you and your wife a wonderful meal!"

Patrick gently grasped her arm as she moved towards the stove. "Please don't tell Rebecca: it'll only worry her and with our child..."

"I understand, dear. Now just relax - Rebecca is sleeping in your room. You could wake her in half an hour..."

The human fell asleep as his landlady made the evening meal.

When he awoke in the middle of the night, it was warm and his head was lying against something soft that didn't seem to be a pillow...

Taranieth blacked out eventually, and was woken by a sharp pain at his crotch. She'd tied it up, the madwoman, and he could smell blood- his own.

She hadn't broken anything, at least. He flexed his fingers stiffly, and she smiled at him, kissing him before biting hard on his lip, splitting it open.

Patrick bolted out of bed and stared at Rebecca in confusion. It was clearly the middle of the night, and he'd been sleeping on her chest...

He opened his mouth to ask what the hell she was thinking, then realised that she was asleep.

The human left the house with his borrowed knife in hand, searching for more wood to carve out the little boy's image as well as he couldn't sleep any longer.

He spent the hours until morning sat at the Sullivan's kitchen table, whittling away and composing a letter in his mind - he didn't want to waste someone else's parchment by making mistakes all over it.

Once the dawn's light hit the floor, he grabbed a quill and parchment, ready to start scribbling.
Mrs. Sullivan patted his shoulder and made the tea, silent and peaceful - considerate of the day before.

Two hours before dawn and Taranieth felt like he had been run over by a herd of elephants, and he was weeping at the pain and the thought of Patrick. Still, when told to lick, he licked, told to bend, he bent, told to sit, he sat, however unpleasant the place to sit on was.

His arms were mottled purple and blue and he hoped he still had enough magic to hide it when Patrick returned.

The moment he put the pen down, Patrick grimaced at the parchment. He didn't tell me when to come back... or if he even wants me back...
Miserable, he folded the letter as neatly as his hands would allow, trembling as they were. Then he stood and bowed to Mrs. Sullivan.

"I won't work today, so if you think I could be of help with the children or the cooking..." he offered, standing again to await her response.

"Of course you mustn't work!! But you should spend the day with Rebecca - it'll make-"

"No, she'd just worry and she's so delicate...." he murmured, seeming to be the perfect, caring husband. "But carving fallen wood and watching the children... I'd be able to calm down and learn to be a father." he murmured, smiling a little at the prospect of caring for his own children one day...

... then he had to stifle his pain and expression at the thought of the previous day: maybe he'd never have that wish fulfilled with Taran now?

Morning came at last, and Taranieth got off the bed, weakly calling to Keegan. The dragon was just outside, and he nodded, tilting his head quietly. "Get Patrick." he said weakly.

Keegan turned and whipped through the woods, trying to find Patrick. Eventually he got to the village, and stalked carefully around the edges of the slowly-waking area.

He eventually got the scent, and followed it to a house. He couldn't go in, so instead he very carefully drew a fairy on the front walk, with his claw, and hung about, listening.

Mrs Sullivan interpreted that fleeting expression to mean he'd remembered the previous day. Her skirts rustled as she went to hug him.
"It's alright now, dear. You're home and safe, with your wife and bairn upstairs. Now you just drink your tea, and I'll make sure to call my children - they can help you collect wood. Oh!"
She handed him the knife he'd borrowed the day before. "You may as well keep this for now - can't make a likeness without a knife!"

Patrick nodded, drank his cup dry, then forced a smile to welcome the kids when they came in. "Morning..."

All of them then left by the back door, heading to the woods.

The dragon watched them go and growled under his breath. Taranieth was waiting and the idiot didn't know!

He sneaked around them, and turned to find one of Taranieth's hairs snagged on his tail. He ran ahead and tied it to a branch.

Patrick sprinted to catch the little boy as he was about to reach for the branch Keegan had tied the hair to.
"We never break branches off of living trees, because it's wrong. Now could you gather the ones on the ground for me please?" he gently admonished, turning his head to see the hair on the branch.

Pain shot through him as he gently picked it up and fought the urge to sob. He didn't see Keegan and so thought it was a coincidence.
He turned towards the children again.

Keegan facepalmed angrily, and wound up climbing down and very carefully tripping him with his tail. His eyes glowed out of the bushes, waiting for him to turn.

Finally, the human saw the dragon and fought his multiple, conflicting urges. If he hugged the dragon to within an inch of his life, the children would notice - especially since Patrick would be burnt.
If he screamed or demanded an explanation, he'd seem crazy.
If he cried...

With a cough, he nodded to Keegan and turned to the children. "If you kids could go inside, please? I left my - letter - on the table and I want to send it soon...?"

He smiled at them, then made motions as though he'd race them inside, then the moment they turned their backs he disappeared into the trees to wait for Keegan to meet him.

The dragon was quick. He pointed to the hair, and then towards the house. He tugged at his shirt-sleeve, trying to pull him there. He knew Taranieth needed help, needed Patrick to be there, and he'd do whatever it took to make that happen.

Patrick was a little confused, but he allowed Keegan to pull him wherever they had to go. "You lead the way and I'll follow..." he whispered.

Through the forest they went and to the portal. Taranieth was inside, having carefully disguised his bruises, if looking a little tired. Keegan gave him a curious look at the glamour, and Taranieth shook his head warningly. "I'm glad you're back, Patrick. I had a... visitor. I'm sorry for my brusque manner but I needed you not to be around." he said gently. His voice had lost a little of its musical quality- it was hoarse and tired. He was sitting, gingerly, on the little armchair, and he extended his arms to bring the other close. He needed hugs, cuddles, sex, anything of Patrick's to make him forget that night.

Patrick stared at him for a moment, trying to work out why Taran seemed so exhausted and pained when there were no visible injuries.
After a few minutes, he cleared his throat. "Firstly, what do you drink? You sound as though you spent the whole night yelling - if it was a sparring partner, you don't need to hide bruises and such. If you do, I'll end up hurting you by accident..."

He moved a step closer, still uncertain after the images and thoughts Taran had used to chase him away. "But if you have the drink in the kitchen, I'll make it and help you drink it, ok?"
