"Trisha is our elder sister," Ryu explained, "She was one of the first Seconds created, and the first to grow up into adulthood. Mother had found the world just as it was being created."
Feng giggled, "It was funny because Mother didn't know the vase had a Second in it, and she put it on display thinking it was a normal vase."

Lin looked around her, and as far as she knew it was just Ulani, and Ulrich's family and this ranch, and looked at Elros before blurting out, "But there's no where to spend it. Why have it?"
What was the point of having gold if you were going to be out here where there was no place to spend it? Sure she knew a person could go to a city, but that had to be a long ways off.

Aliya was confused now. "So you guys come out of vases, instead of from parents?" she questioned, wondering even as she asked if that was even possible. "There's got to be a third party involved somewhere, hasn't there? They can't just come into existence on their own ..."
Elros chuckled - he couldn't help it. "Well, they would take it back to their homes and spend it there," he explained. "Sometimes they don't want it to spend it, it's just a status symbol, something that makes people respect them."

"Well the twin goddesses created us," Feng replied back, "One of them shapes the vases and the other puts whatever it is that goes into the vases that makes us, well... us." Ryu nodded, "The type of vase even gives hints to the type of Second, tall vases belong to the Seconds that do not have wings of any sort. The vases that have wide bellies and handles on them have are often the angel and demon err... devil but demon came out of devil, races. If the vase has a wide mouth and the handle goes all the way to the top it's an angel vase, so the Second will have bird wings, and if the handles only stick out from the belly it's a demon Second, they have bat wings instead of bird wings. The pitcher like vases belong to the fairy Seconds, they have these kind of insect clear wings and Feng and I came from shallow vases, those are the one sthat belong to the water dwelling Seconds." "The water Seconds are different in that you can tell if it's a boy or a girl by the vase for water Seconds," Feng added.

Lin thought the second reason was weird, at least she thought so. She overheard her Daddy talk about the clans a lot, clans were respected for what they did in their fields and if they were good at it. Sure there was a lot of places that the clans owned, but only because it meant they were good at keeping together and doing their jobs.
"But doesn't the whole respect thing only count if you're good at a real job?" Lin asked.

"Interesting," Aliya murmured. "And or the other races, then, I suppose that no one knows what sex they're going to be until they're born?"
In that way it was rather similar to natural births, then, though there were always telltale hints about which sex a baby was going to be.
Elros thought about that for a moment as he entered into the trees. "If no one knows that they don't actually have a real job," he murmured, "or if they think that they inherited it from noble family or something ... then they would still have respect."

"For the most part, though...." Feng looked thoughtful, "Mother always seemed to know what gender the child was going to be, she rarely doesn't know except when Jin was born, but Jin isn't a Second. I don't know how she knew."
"Maybe she asked," Ryu replied, "It's not like the goddesses isolate themselves from us."

"What's a noble family?" Lin asked since that didn't make much sense to her, "It's it like a clan?"
Though the idea of a noble family was foreign to her, why would she know since such old families didn't exist near the city she lived in, and her mother and father were certainly not from those type of families... well at least not in that sense.

Aliya was impressed. "Your deities live among you?" she asked excitedly. "That must be exciting! I want to live with the Valar someday. Mum and Ada won't talk about it, they're not allowed to, but I know it was great. It had to have been."
Elros wasn't sure what a clan was, but it didn't stop him from answering Lin's question.
"A noble family is like a royal family," he replied. "Or Lords or the like. Lord Elrohir, for example, is nobility, and because of it, so is his wife, Lady Haradhel. Knights are also a sort of nobility, though of a lesser degree."
He spotted one of the guards just ahead and moved swiftly towards him for his report.

The twins blinked, "Is that unusual?" Ryu asked.
They were use to goddesses in the Second world and spirits at home, so it had never occured to them that there was something extra special about the goddesses. For they acted as like any other person.

Lin studied the guard wondering if it was someone who she had met or not, probably not. After all she had only met two of the guards so far. Though she had to think even harder about this idea of a noble family. That was different she supposed than the clans unless you came from the main branch.
"Oh...." she murmured, "I get it.. I think."

"Well," Aliya said thoughtfully, "from what I'm told, the elves separated themselves from the Valar voluntarily, and the Valar never pressed it. I don't know what happened between them, Elros would probably know, but ..."
She shrugged.
"Celeborn," Elros greeted the other elf; and then the two of them launched into a short conversation in elvish. After only a minute, Elros nodded, satisfied, and started off again.
"It's more about positions of power or authority than anything," he continued his explanation to Lin, "though to some people it means more."

"Oh..." Feng murmured, "I didn't know that, I can't imagine the goddesses not being there."
She mused on this thought for a while.
"I think it's just something we take for granted, but then again," Ryu shrugged, "Like I said, we're new, there aren't enough of us yet and only Yue has had kids."

Lin had no idea what they were saying, but Elrohir had said they spoke common tongue because otherwise they wouldn't understand each other. She supposed that after living apart for a very very very very long time the two different colour haired elves didn't speak the same way.
"But that isn't fun," Lin replied, "Daddy says its bothersome to have everyone look at you, but then Mommy giggles. I think it's because he ends up doing that anyways even though its bothersome."

"To be fair, the Valar lived with the elves almost until the Second Age," Aliya shrugged. "The elves had the choice of going with them or staying here ... either that or they originally lived there, and had the choice of coming here. I'm not quite sure on that count."
Elros smiled faintly. "There are many who believe as your father does," he agreed. "Being in a position of authority, or being someone who has an abnormal amount of respect, places one more in the public eye. It's something that can't be avoided, whether or not they like it."
