"Its not your fault my parents are idiots," Cody shook his head. His father took hold of his arm, catching up to them in three strides.
"You'll stay for dinner. You and your friend."

Dari swallowed. Great. Now they were hostages? He turned and gave Cody's father an anxious smile. Why? He clearly hated the idea of them, so why should they stay?

Cody looked to Dari for a moment. "Lets go help mom in the kitchen," he suggested. Anything to get away from the look his father was giving them. He led Dari into the kitchen. "Mom's always been a great cook. I didn't inherit any of her talents, though."
Hannah followed them. "So, Dari. Tell me how you and Cody met?" she prompted. There was a bit of curiosity, but it was clearly forced politeness.

Dari swallowed hard. He didn't want to be here. If they were going to be forced to stay, though, he had better be damn polite.
"We were in the park. Cody bumped into me and spilled my coffee on me." He forced a smile and tucked his hands in his pockets. He felt like if he touched anything in this place they'd be scrubbing it down with bleach after they left.

"Ah, sounds like him." Hannah gave Dari a smile. "One time, he was so excited to go to the zoo he tripped and scraped up both knees." She shook her head. Cody's clumsiness: that was something she could relate to Dari about, apparently.
"Mooooom." Cody groaned. This, this was what he was used to. His mom embarrassing him in front of his friends. In this case, in front of his true love.
Hannah took out a tray of cookies from the oven.

Oh? This almost seemed like bonding? Gosh, he was confused. Cody's mother was definitely less intimidating than his father. All he could do was smile and nod.
"Cute."

"Cody, have you been reading your bible lately?" she asked. She set the cookie tray on the stove and looked to her son. Her expression became almost stern.
"Stop it," Cody replied, and stole a cookie from the tray. He burnt his fingers in the process. "Try one," he offered one to Dari. He ate a cookie and sucked on his fingers.
"Well. You know what it says about--"
"Stop it!" Cody turned and glared. "Stop. Mom. I love Dari. And you were excited to meet him until you saw him."

Dari uncrossed his arms from his chest and took the cookie. He had a feeling he wasn't supposed to eat these. He took a bite like a hammer might rain down on him at any point and was forming a kind compliment about them when it happened. Ah, here it went. The bible. 'They shall be put to death; their blood shall be upon them' and such. Fantastic. His eyes rolled to the ceiling for a moment and he just maintained his awkward little smile. It wasn't his place to say anything.

Hannah fell silent. Somehow she has a feeling she wouldn't get through to her son. She gave Cody a disapproving look and started to set cookies on a plate. "I've told you a million times, you'll burn yourself if you pick them off the tray!" She made a plate for Dari as well.
"What happened to that pretty girl? The one you talked about studying with?"
Cody took his plate of cookies and scowled. "My professor was married. Or would you encourage adultery?"

Dari watched the conversation with curiosity, if it could even be called that. He had never seen Cody so worked-up and scornful.
"Cody, stop," he urged quietly. He didn't want this to turn into some big scene, even as much as he wanted to remind Mrs. Fletcher that her son was clearly gay, or that his boyfriend was right here listening to her talk about 'that pretty girl.'

Cody did stop. He took a breath and wrapped an arm around Dari's waist. He glared at his mother, as if daring her to question it. "C'mon. I'll show you my old room."

Oh! Oh, God. Cody, no. Why was he being so overtly affectionate when he knew his parents were unhappy?! Dari swallowed nervously and nodded. "Sure, love." He'd do anything to get out from under this woman's sights.

Cody led Dari down the hall and into his room, ignoring the shout of "KEEP YOUR DOOR OPEN!" from his father. He slammed the door and leaned hos back against it.
"Baby, I'm so sorry."

...what were they, sex addicts? Teenage boys? Dari's brows furrowed at the insinuation. As if gay people couldn't keep their pants on, even in a stranger's house deserving of respect? He turned back to Cody, his mouth mushed over to one side.
"So did they just not know you were gay or...?"

"It never occured to me that they wouldn't know..." he shook his head. He moved away from the door and hugged Dari. "I can't believe they're acting like this, though." He'd been hoping just to escape, go home. Order some take out chinese. "I told them all about you. I guess they can't see past this." He stroked Dari's cheek. "They can't see anything I see in you."
