The first and second games were pretty good. I know some people didn't like it for the Disney elements, but the original aspects were pretty good. The only thing I didn't like was how figurative everything was. I mean...is "darkness" a metaphor or something? I couldn't tell whether they were talking about a physical object or a mindset.
The DS game wasn't much. Yeah, the system was interesting but it was pretty much the same story all over again with a bit of backstory explaining why you have to go through it again. If anything it was just bridging the gap.
Maybe in the third game they'll finally clarify a bunch of things so that it isn't all figurative.

ragingtofu .Although it did win for having Tron. And I'm pretty sure the artist for TWEWY also did KHII; in fact, I think I still have the standee for KHII, one of the nicer perks of when I worked at GameStop. qft Yeah, Ill probably be filling up my room with crap like that in no time, though we dont really have anything in the store I want right now. Anyway, I suddenly feel like singing, so Im gonna go play Rock Band. If anyone see's Desi, tell him to get on Live and play with me.

I hated that KH tried to come off as all metaphorical, mysterious and the like with the Heartless and Nobodies - they failed miserably. The basic "all-pervasive good vs. immoral evil" was constantly present throughout the entire game. Don't try and bullshit me with weak-a** characterizations like that, especially when you're trying to pose for something deeper than a novelty plot.
And as Rage mentioned, KH2 made it into another Final Fantasy game with "Lol, Disney" tacked on. I would be surprised if there is a link to Disney at all in the 3rd beyond Donald, Goofy, Mickey and a few others.

Kingdom Hearts 3 / III / IIV / 2 SE Let's Fighting Edition is supposed to be "darker" than the previous two games; so my guess is they're pretty much ditching Disney altogether at this point.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. I felt the same about the second one when all the early pictures showed nothing but Axel and Roxas and the dual keyblades. Then once more came around it's like "Hey, what the hell is Aladdin doing here? I thought we were done with him!"
And then...there was singing.
People who have read VG cats know the horror I speak of.
But if the third game really is much darker and the only disney characters in it are the main ones, then I'm happy. It'd work much better if the entire game was focused on the main story rather than the main story having to do with you being thrown into stories you already know the ending to.

Except the original "main story" of KH had plenty to do with Disney. Disney characters were actual, legitimate threats to Sora's quest. Now they're ******** jokes as he continues to grow more wankier with his plot device powers (punting around buildings and blocking thousands of lasers, anyone?).
The path they're taking is the pseudo-metaphorical bullshit that makes it a laughing stock compared to games with good plot, like Final Fantasy Tactics, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment and the like.
It'll also be a waiting game of "which awesome game feature does KH try and rip off from others but fails miserably". I mean, ********, why the hell bother stealing GoW's cinematic button sequence scenes (yes, I know other games had this before GoW, oh well) when all the player has to do is press a single button?

Actually, nevermind.
I already figured out my last quip: several 90-minute long cutscenes that can't be skipped, just like Metal Gear Solid 4.
Except, the only people who would like that are probably the Japanese, because ********, they're the only ones who have ever done this.
Fun fact: MGS4 has more cutscene length than the entire Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy.

I like how Shenmue basically got panned universally for it's features, but other games now are being praised for the same thing.
Slow, branching story arcs? Mass Effect.
Quick-time events? God of War.
Extended cut-scenes? Metal Gear Solid 4.

Yeah, point taken on that. I enjoyed the games, but I class it as the kind of game that you'd like if you liked the subject matter in the first place, as well as a story that has some thought to it. But what you're saying is one of my grievances with story progression. Just when the hell did Sora learn how to fight so well with a sword? They better not expect me to believe that playing with wooden swords with his friends on an island for someodd years of his life allows him to fight on equal footing with gods, ghosts, undead pirates and Sephiroth. Even if one of his childhood friends was supposed to be Tidus.
That brings me to the whole anachronism the Final Fantasy characters have in it, considering that their stories were warped to fit in with the whole world-devouring scheme. It'd work a lot better with completely original characters, but I guess it was interesting enough to at least run into Final Fantasy characters and pretend their stories were the same.
In all honesty I'd believe it a lot better if the Keyblade was sentient and basically told him what to do. I'd believe the stunts he pulled off if he was being guided by the consciousness of what was supposed to be a really powerful weapon.

*Was back-reading, caught Rage's post about The World Ends With You.*
Josh bought that for me while he was down. I've been playing it almost non-stop for three or four days now.

I've been kind of lazy about getting through The World Ends With You. I'm up to Joshua's chapter, day 3, and I've been kind of lax about it ever since.
