It had become normal for everyone to call him 'Dari' again, even the humans he had met since his change, so he wasn't discouraged. In fact he smiled and then grinned at the familiar face. One hand was for his coffee. The other raised in a wave.
"Come on," he nodded to Cody, "I think he has two together."

Cody reluctantly followed, taking a sip of his drink. Maybe this guy wouldn't be as annoying as Ronan had been.
The guy smiled at Dari when they came over. "Who's your friend?" he asked.

"Oh! Cody, this is Hayden. Hayden, this is Cody." He gestured between them and waited for Cody to sit before he took his own seat.

Cody shook hands with Hayden and sat next to Dari. He was frowning slightly, but it softened as he looked to Dari. "Do you like your drink, love?"

Dari nodded and took a sip of his nearly-too-hot beverage. Well that was kind of a weird question. He wouldn't have ordered something he didn't like. "S'good."
He tried to figure Cody out for a moment, and then politely turned to Hayden. "So how have you been? It's been a while!" He would have preferred to just sit with Cody, but you couldn't be rude to friends sitting nearby.

"Good!" Hayden replied, flashing Dari a smile. "Been to the club lately?" he began a tale about how he'd encountered Dari's old pal Jake. "He's so awkward. He could've asked!"

"Once, yeah." Camping was more Cody's thing than clubs, and that was fine. Sometimes he missed it, but only when Cody wasn't there.
"Oh, God," Dari responded, making all of the appropriate grimacing faces and shaking his head. "I didn't know you knew him. Poor guy, I just laughed in his face, but yeah, he could have asked. That was my first time out. I mean out-out. A bit much! Pretty face, but I'm not sure about his head."

"Can't blame him for trying with you, though," Hayden looked Dari up and down, clearly flirting. "You're gorgeous."
Cody had lost interest in his drink. He narrowed his eyes at Hayden.

Dari just laughed and shook his head. Hah!
"Oh, please. I don't think--" he looked around. Too many people. "I don't think what he tried should be the first move. Honestly it was fine right up until then, and then he went running off to find someone else. If I was that pretty he'd have apologized and tried again." Spfft. As if. Jake was one of those back-of-the-room make-outers. Or worse. Dari wouldn't know personally.

"I wouldn't mind trying," Hayden mused, looking at Dari. No, he wouldn't mind trying at all. Dari was handsome, and smart, and funny. A good dancer, too! "Well. Not like that."
Cody muttered about craving a cinnamon roll and left the table to wait in line.

Dari laughed outright and clapped a hand over his mouth.
"Please don't. Really. Not a good idea-- okay, love." He touched Cody's leg as he left. Huh. That was neither Cody's normal tone of voice, nor his usual manners or mannerisms. What was wrong? He turned back to Hayden, not to discourage the man. He had just been about to introduce Cody as his boyfriend too. He hadn't been present in conversation at all and it was only fair. Oh well.
"I don't think that's the right way to go about it, anyway. Dinner maybe, first. At least a drink. At least a drink, but I still would have laughed in his face."

"Want to go to dinner with me?" Hayden asked, looking to Dari. He was either oblivious to Dari calling Cody 'love' or was ignoring it. "Tonight maybe?"
Cody froze, looking back to Dari and Hayden. He waited for Dari's response.

"Oh, um." Dari looked back at the line for Cody, but he'd lost him in the crowd. "I, uh." He turned back to Hayden. "I don't think so. Cody and I are--hm. I'll have to ask him when he gets back. He's acting strange." Another sip of macchiato. Why was he acting strangely, though?

Hayden paused and seemed to be in disbelief. "What?" he asked. "You and--that guy?" he snorted at the ridiculousness of it. "Hon, you can do so much better."
Cody heard. And silently, he agreed. What was a special agent doing with an average guy like him? There was nothing special about him. Hell. Dari had gone to Harvard! He was rich! He was smart! He worked for the FBI! He could've been with anyone he wanted.

Dari's brow furrowed. What? He smiled beside himself.
"Hm? We're... yes. I think? I mean, yes." He was asking if they were a couple, right? Not something else? He didn't want to answer incorrectly. "I don't want to do 'better'." The quotes were unfortunately only audible in his own head. He uncomfortable took a long draught from his coffee.
