Actually, puppet, a lot of vegans I know who do it for that reason don't do it because the nature of it is wrong to kill animals. It's to protest the food industries treatment of animals. They way they are treated is not very ethical at all, from what I've heard. That's why they don't eat eggs or milk, even though it doesn't hurt the animal.
Granted there may be some people who think killing animals in anyway is wrong, but eating plants is better because in a lot of cases as far as being human goes, it is not the entire plant that is eaten, it is the fruit which will fall off the plant when it is over ripe, or it is a matter of trimming the outer layers so that the plant can grow bigger.
So if you look at it from that point of view, vegetables and fruits are not being unethically treated as much as animals are.
