It was early, oddly early for Miller, even as a bird he found the term, early bird to be lacking in even his semi bird like state, but today was different. He was up and out of bed just a while before six in the morning. The day before he had tried to make peace with Lauren only to have her show up half feral.
After splitting up with Natsumi he had tried to get into Lauren's and even called a few more times hoping she would come to her senses, but it was to no avail. So with that sinking notion in his mind he went to one other person he could think of who would care enough hopefully to help some one who was once more then a friend.
It was with that he knocked on Nita's door.

By 6AM, Nita had already been awake for several hours. Comet had already been walked and fed; the two of them were back at the duplex.
Nita lounged on her couch with a book, tail tucked around her legs, and a bowl of bamboo leaves on the end-table at her head. At Miller's knock, Comet bounded to the door, barking loudly.
"Hush," Nita instructed. She took a moment to finish a paragraph before setting the book down and trundling towards the door. She peeked out the window, shoving the energetically barking dog aside with one leg. "Hey, Miller," she said. "Uh, come on in."
Grabbing the dog by the collar, Nita dragged her away from the entrance. "Sorry, we haven't had many visitors lately."

Miller gave Nita the best of a smile he could offer in his sour mood before following Nita in to her duplex reaching out after Commet to offer her a scratch behind the ears.
"Eh I know what itz like..." he took a seat waiting for Nita to sit down as well before he continued, "Nita I need your help, it'z Lauren." He paused frowning trying to decide just how to say it while scratching at a rather annoying bug bite on the back of his neck. "She hasn't been well lately to say the least."

Nita reclaimed her seat, Comet clambering onto the couch as well. The dog's thick tail thumped the cushions in a regular tempo.
"Lauren?" she repeated, leaning forward. "Did she go into remission? Should she.. should she be in the labs again?"

Miller fidgeted about in his seat, for some reason his tail was tingling and itching much more then it normally would have, though the fidgeting passed quick enough.
"No not remission... Nita, I thinkz she's going Feral..." the last words came out quietly as his head drooped down. "I tried to talk to her yesterdayz, I saw her in the junngle, she was dirty, like shedz been sleeping out therez. She even tried to bitez me." As proof he held up his hand which had bruised rather nicely from the warning bite.

Nita froze. The thought of anyone going feral was terrifying... even more so if it was a friend. Or whatever she and Lauren were now. She knew Lauren could be dangerous, her old life on the streets had proven that. Now she was equipped with sharp claws, teeth, and a keen instinct for hunting. And while mongooses weren't as large as a wolf or a tiger, Lauren was no ordinary mongoose. If she'd already tried to attack Miller.... s**t.
"Oh," was all Nita managed. "That's... um." She stared at her lap, her short fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. "Are you okay?"

Miller sat in the silence feeling the itch burning his neck, he looked up to Nita and shook his head slowly, "No I'm notz, first Kikue, now Laurenz running off."
He shook his head again, he felt hot all of the sudden, "Nita can I have something to drink... it feelz hot in here." he mumbled quietly.

Kikue, too. Nita had put it out of her mind that the snow leopard girl had attacked that man, all those months ago. And Nita hadn't seen her since. So she must be out there, too. She was just a little girl.
Nita frowned. She kept the air-conditioning in her duplex around 60 degrees; it was a welcome respite from the heat and humidity outside. "Yeah, sure," she said. "There should be ice in the freezer, you can help yourself."

Miller got up and started to make his way past Nita, everything seemed so blurry, he felt sick, it wasn't till the first feathers started to rise up on his face that he realized what was really going on.
Suddenly everything was tilted sideways as he collapsed sideways and down onto the floor, the feathers on his face slowly breaking the surface and once more bringing the light coating of fresh blood on there quills.
He scratched furiously at them, till suddenly even his fingers started to burn, the worse part was his nails, each one forced away from the skin as feathers surfaced between flesh and nail, all his scratching did was spread the blood about making a mess of the new feathers even more.
All the while he let out shrill tweets and shouts of agony as his body started to shake and wither on the floor.

Nita was still deep in thought (or possibly shock) until Miller collapsed. So that would explain why he'd felt hot, she thought irrelevantly. Comet jumped off the couch, Nita only seconds behind.
From what it looked like, feathers were worse than fur. At least Nita hadn't done so much bleeding. That would have to be cleaned up... The young woman forced herself to move around the shaking figure on the floor, going for a cup and the bottle of Tylenol.
"Dammit," she muttered, crouching on the floor beside Miller. Comet was sniffing the air as hard as she could, interested and alarmed by the scents coming from the bird-man.
"It's okay, it's okay. It'll be over soon." Nita started a litany of automatic but useless phrases. There was nothing she could do but wait.

Miller thrashed about a bit more, the feathers finally slowed there growth, but it was still sore and sensitive. He rolled his head slowly to look at Nita his eyes wide but confused and in a state of shock.
Finally he stilled for the moment, he panted slowly looking around confused and disoriented as he got his barings again. "Bloody he-" he was cut short letting out another shrill tweet, his neck snapped back as he let out a shrike of pain, and suddenly his lower beak came in full force from just above his lower jaw.
He fell down again twitching slightly, he noticed faintly the bottle of Tylenol in Nita's hand which he promptly tried to grab in an attempt to devour a few of the pills in hopes it would numb the horrible pain.

Just when Nita thought it might be over, Miller's beak jutted out. "Ouch," she winced, covering her ears against the shrill tweeting. Comet's ears were plastered to her head; the dog crept backwards and slunk under the table.
"Hold on, hang on," Nita murmured, launching into her litany again. Deftly she unscrewed the cap and dumped three or four pills onto her hand. "Don't choke," she said. Unfortunately for Miller, it would still take a good five or ten minutes for the medication to take effect.

Once more it all seemed to slow down, everything came in bursts of agony, all of them though left the same slow ache that filled every inch of him. He reached over to Nita his hands shaking as he took the pills.
Almost as soon as he got them down his red jacket started to bulge at the shoulders were his small wings resigned, at once he rolled over thrashing about grabbing at the coat but finding in all the pain it was rather hard to remove the coat that was now restraining his wings beneath. "Get et ouf!" he shouted into the floor.

At first Nita didn't realize what was happening. And then she remembered the stubby wings protruding from Miller's shoulders. Formerly stubby, it appeared.
"Hold still! Hold still if you can!" Nita exclaimed. A few quick slashes of her dark claws shredded the back of Miller's jacket.
Oh well. It wasn't like he'd really be able to wear it anymore, anyway.

Miller bit his new beak togeather, dug his fingers into the carpet tugging and clawing as Nita ripped away at his coat, for a moment he almost wanted to laugh at the thought, he always seemed to ruin more clothes with each change he under went.
Once the jacket was gone the wings easily spread them selves, the feathers this time being less bloody as a good portion simply grew longer then growing anew.
Slowly, and carefully Miller rolled him self over onto the tattered remains of his jacket carefully not to catch or crush his new wings, they felt so much heavier now.
He looked over at Nita panting slowly breathing through his mouth rather then the tiny holes of his beak. All at once his chest seemed to expand, in a single heart beat his ribcage bugled out and muscles bugled with it, in a span of three heart beats, and quick ones at that for the speed which his more bird like heart beat his body had changed again on the inside. He looked more curved like an actual budgie did rather then the slim skinny chest he used to have.
"I'mz gona killemz... fer diz..." he muttered after it all turned to a painful ache.
