Once they had landed back in the temple, the first thing Dawson did was turn and try to pull Maebe into a hug. He didn't really do that enough, he realized, even without her dedicated service to helping him find this artifact. This was someone who really needed hugs.

The world blurred when she was pulled in for a hug she wasn't expecting, and she stared wide eyed at his chest for a moment, attempting to comprehend the sudden act. Before she could rationalize it away, or force herself to believe something that would trivialize it, she shuddered and buried her head into his chest. She thought she was done crying, and she had gotten all of it out alone in her room. All it took was his arms wrapping around her, enveloping her almost completely in a darkness that she wasn't afraid of, to knock that tiny shanty wall she'd tried to erect against him. She didn't want to be this way. Not around him. Not with him. God, not with him. She sniffled, and then muffled out an embarrassed laugh. She knew she was going to have to explain herself, eventually. But instead, she wrapped her arms around him and threw herself into a great big cathartic hug.

There was one thing Maebe should have learned early on: she never had to explain what she didn't want to explain. Not on the night she had nearly gotten herself killed, not now. He was content to stand there and hold her for as long as she needed (and needed was very much the operative word here, because no-one clung and cried in a hug if they didn't need it, he knew that all too well), happy to suffer through the idea that he definitely had said something to hurt her if another hadn't, ready and willing as always to take on a burden until someone else was satisfied. Dawson stroked her back and let her cry it out, watching their surroundings through glances just to make sure they wouldn't get ambushed for staying in place too long. "Whose a** I gotta kick, hun?" he asked after a while.

"Nobody's," She choked out through the tears and laughter combined. "Everybody's. Mine. Yours." She blew out a long, exhausted sigh, and nestled her face into him. He was just as warm there, as he was from the back. He was always so damn warm. "I would apologize, but then you would call me on it. So I won't." She pulled her head away just enough to slip her hands between them, and run her fingers up against her cheeks and under her eyes. She was glad the temple required minimal makeup wear, otherwise she'd look like more of a wreck than she could handle. Her hands left her face, and pressed against his chest instead, open palms both splayed out against the shirt to feel the beating heart behind it all. She stared there, instead of looking up at him; she had the sinking suspicion if she looked in his eyes right now, she'd start crying all over again. "Thank you." She offered instead of an apology, because he deserved it. She'd spent her entire life being filled with the anger and horror of others, using her for their own release. She felt guilty, and sick, at the idea of using Dawson in that way, but every time she was in his arms she could tell just a little bit of all the darkness inside of her would sneak away and escape.

"Well that's gonna be a sight, huh, kickin' my own a**," he said with a little grin. "Heh. Maybe I should let ya do that. I'd prob'ly miss my own a** tryin' t'swing anyway." Rather than say you're welcome, which he hoped she would assume anyway given who she was talking to, Dawson took his hat off and sat it on her head, avoiding her bun. Considering that he never took his hats for anything and often protested people stealing it, he hoped the gesture meant more than it looked. "Anytime, Mayb," he said simply. "You still wanna go?"

Considering how many times she had been the one stealing his hat off of his head, Maebe had seen the distress enough to understand it wasn't easy for him to do. Everyone had their comfort zones, and reaching out of them was something she appreciated more than she could say. Plus, when the hat was settled on her head, the lip of it covered her tear streaked face, and the dark blossom of color that burned her pale skin. It was a perfect fit. "Of course." She pulled herself away from him in inches, one hand tugging the lip of the hat down to cover her face while the other buried itself in the palm of his. "I can see why you like this thing." She murmured, her voice now lilted with satisfaction. "It's like protection." Nothing could hurt her, under there.

He hadn't considered it at all until Maebe put the sensation he'd always known into words. Blinking, Dawson ran a hand through his shaggy hair and attempted to press the cowlick at the back down, even though it never cooperated. "Huh. Yeah, actually." He was going to have to not think about it too much.
After fixing his shirt and a little beam at the sight (supreme seemed to fit her in his eyes), he led her by the hand to the dreaded pond. And as per usual, they were met with resistance.

But hey, at least he wasn't the muddy mess he was before, right? On the other side, Dawson rubbed at a welt on his arm with a wince, wishing there was some way to just burn the vines or avoid them or something. It felt less like a trial and more like a nuisance at this point. And then he cupped his mouth and started to do a cheer. "Let's go, Su-preme!" Clap-clap-clapclapclap. Stamina: 10

This time, she let out a big sigh of relief when the ache of worry came back. She winced when the vines and mud attacked him, her hands balling up into fists that wanted to go punch them into submission. When he started cheering for her, she stomped in, and did just that. The vines wrapped around her arms, and pulled until she tore them apart with her manicured nails, leaving chips of color on their dead stalks. They wrapped around her feet, and she stomped until the water around her bled green. It discolored her white shoes, but they'd been through so much already it was hardly noticeable. She jumped up onto the shore, bent her knees, and leapt up onto him. "Su-preeeeeme." She cried out joyfully, clinging to him like a spider monkey. So much for thinking she was fat. Stamina: 25

"Whoashit--" Dawson stumbled but caught himself before he hit the water, thankfully. Backing out before the vines got up to any funny business, he pushed Maebe up into a more secure position and grinned widely, ignoring all other previous aches and sores. "'Sup, Supreme?" he greeted her, knocking his head gently against the brim of his hat. "You done tearin' this pond a new one?"

"I guess. I could go back and tear it a few more, but maybe later." She pointed down the hallway, her expression haughty. "For now, we move forward."
Her pointed hand pulled back, suddenly holding the lip of the hat again, and pulling it down past her eyes until they could no longer be seen. From underneath, all that was visible was that harsh, half-cocked, smile.
She would have let him carry her all the way to the end, if not for the scarabs that started to crawl into her hair, followed by the bull that knocked her right out of Dawson's arms and onto the floor. The temple did not like PDA.

"Yes, ma'am!"
A lot of things apparently did not like PDA of any kind, however. While Maebe was chased by a bull, both the cerberus and a boar went after his hind (and partially succeeded in getting it). What a rowdy little rodeo this was turning out to be.
