Dead of course, which is the point of the stupid joke..
Normally it's "Why did the Chicken Cross the road? To get to the other side." Inherently the chicken makes it across the road ok.
The raccoon on the other hand, seems to have trouble with this consept and likes to cross the road when a car/truck is coming.
Hense, "To show the Raccoon that it could be done."
It takes all the fun out of stupid jokes when you have to explain them.

clouds are normally up. Where I am the birds seem to be up. they are chirping like mad.
