"You make it sound like being sleepy all the time is something you can control," Ryu looked at Aliya as if she was the odd one.
It was probably the only part of their paradise that wasn't paradise, though it might explain the lack of adult Seconds running around most of the time.

"Daddy pleasee?" Lin looked up at her daddy with her hands together.
Donovan could almost imagine it being Kara saying 'Donovan please', to the point where it kind of scared him. The similiarities was too much even for him.
He nodded though, there was little harm in it, "Sure, but if anything happens listen to Elros."
Lin squealed happily, "I will, I will!"
At least she hoped nothing bad would happen that, that would happy because it would have to be pretty bad.

Aliya stared at Ryu. "Isn't it? If you eat properly and keep yourself healthy and active, there's no reason why anyone should sleep like that ... though if it's a trait of your race, that might explain it. But you escaped it? How?"
Elros smiled faintly and picked Lin up again, then rose and lifted her to his shoulder.
"Off we go then," he murmured softly, heading for the door.

"Care," Feng smiled softly, "We had our mother watching us, it might sound strange to you being a natural baby and all, but we are literary first generation Seconds." "There are no second generation, except for Miyu and Wataru," Ryu added as an after thought, "We don't have biological parents, not because they died or left us, they just never existed."

Lin sat carefully on his shoulder, not that she would have to fully worry, since there was a lot of room.
"Do you look all around the ranch?" Lin asked.
Donovan had to chuckle as he watch the two go off, he was going to have to make sure Lin had a timetable of things to do while he was gone otherwise she was going to probably pester the guy everyday for a lot longer than usual.

Aliya was horrified. "You mean there are others of your race who have no one to take care of them? They're left alone?"
She frowned worriedly. "Perhaps it's better then that they sleep ... I couldn't imagine being alone like that. I mean we used to be pretty alone out here, but at least we always had each other ..."
Elros nodded as he ducked out of the house and turned north.
"Yes," he said quietly, "I just have to go once around the ranch and get reports from all the men, and do my own little look around. It's not very exciting, I'm afraid, but necessary. We haven't been running long but we've had a few problems already."

"It happens from time to time," Ryu replied.
It was a fact to see Seconds who just grew up by themselves, he hadn't thought of it, though he was grateful to have his family.
"Well some grow up fine, like Ayce and Jaseth," Feng reassured Aliya. Ryu raised a brow, "Ayce is fine, but Jaseth has the self-esteem of a flower sometimes."
Though the man was getting better about it.

"So it's really hard running a ranch huh?" Lin asked.
Since she thought those were the kind of problems he was talking about, especially since she knew it was hard to run a school and not everyone lived there all time.

"Well I wouldn't know about running the ranch," Elros replied with a smile, "that would be up to Lord Elrohir and Lady Haradhel. No, the troubles I mean are physical threats, either from raiders or dangerous animals. Thankfully, we haven't had any moor cats yet, and I can only hope that we don't - but we have had two groups of highwaymen, and one from wolves."
Aliya blinked at Feng and Ryu. "So ... they can grow without family?" she asked, confused. "I thought you said they sleep then ..."

"Some do, most don't," Ryu tried to explain, "We know that the two had a guardian, and mother had talked to him a few times enough, but beyond that we don't know."
Feng lounged in her chair thoughtfully, "Besides, they had always been active, the first ones I mean. More so than the later ones, the later ones seem to get it worse."

"I thought horses are too big for wolves to eat... and what are highwaymen?" Lin asked curious.
She had never heard of the term since to keep things simple they had always been referred to as rats by Donovan.

"Are you a young race, then?" Aliya asked curiously. "The way you're talking ..."
"The wolf attack was during the winter," Elros replied softly. "And yes ... they can and will eat a horse, if there is little other food to be found. They will even attack a moor cat, if they're desperate enough. But last winter was a harsh one, and so we did have to worry about them. Highwaymen are people ... humans who, rather than obtaining legitimate jobs, spend their lives robbing people who live away from the cities, and sometimes killing them."

"Yep," Feng grinned, "Most of us haven't been around for very long, the oldest adult is Trisha, she could say a lot about the Second world."
Feng wondered if maybe she could get Trisha to visit even though the young angel seemed more interested in seeing the city, and not to mention she was mated.

"Wouldn't it be easier to just live away from the city and live off the plants and animals than to rob people though? It would be less dangerous," Lin replied back thinking that was a silly thing.
After all they bothered to live all the way out here to rob people, why not just simply live here.

"Trisha?" Aliya asked blankly.
"They don't just want to live and survive," Elros replied, "they want the gold for the sake of having it. There are many people like that, really. And they attack only one or two people at a time, with as many as eight or ten men, so it's not very dangerous for them - unless they run into something they don't expect, like a place like this or people like Ulani and Ulrich."
