Let's say, you're a shinigami, you get stats that you allocate and that determines a modifier that is added on when you attack - it affects other things too, but for now, I'll try to keep it simple.
After allocating stats and calculating modifiers, which is all in a formula provided in the stat system info, it comes down to skills, which is determined by your intelligence(the skill point formula is also provided in the stat system info). After you figure out the bonuses, it now comes down to your Attack Bonus(also known as accuracy) and your dodge.
Ok, so let's say you're a shinigami fighting with a normal Zanpakuto, which means it'd be a melee Zanjutsu attack. Attack Bonus is determined by the base(which is determined by your level), + and skill bonuses, + your Strength Modifier. so, if you had 10 skill points in Zanjutsu, you're level 1, and your strength was 18, your attack bonus would be:
d20(dice roll) + 1(base) + 2(Skill Bonus) + 4(Strength Modifier) = d20+7
That just means you'll have a minimum accuracy of 8 and a maximum of 27. Each time you attack in a battle, you roll the dice and reuse that formula to determine how accurate you are.
Dodge is relatively similar. Let's say you have 16 Awareness, 12 agility, and 10 skill points in the Hohou skill.
d20(dice) + 10(base) + 4(Hohou Bonus) + 1(Agi Modifier) + 3(Awareness Modifier) = d20+18
which means a minimum dodge of 19 and a max of 38. This means that if you roll a 1 and you end up with 19 dodge, your opponent would still have to roll high enough to get a total attack bonus of 20 or more to hit you.
Damage is detailed in the stat info sheets.
