anyone have thoughts on the new gaia poll? about changing the date of when donation letters can be opened? I think it's a bad idea to move them to the start of the month and I believe the majority people voting aren't really people who donate every month either. And if they do donate every month, these are the bastards that raise the prices once they found out it's a good item.

I agree, opening the letters at the end of the month is a good tradition, not a lot of point in changing it. whee

Pharaohess I agree, opening the letters at the end of the month is a good tradition, not a lot of point in changing it. whee I've thought about it...and am more confused than i started out. Lets say that there are lots of people waiting to donate to see what comes out and if they want it.( of course, at that point it stops being donating and becomes buying.) If letters were openable at the beginning of the month, those people would have more time to buy it instead of the 5 or so days they have left at the end of the month now. the way it is now, people CAN make so much money and jack up the market prices for items because people have such a short time to buy the items before they're gone forever.( honestly, if i snail mailed in a donation on the twenty-fifth, it wouldnt reach Cali before the end of the month.) short time to buy items=people willing to pay much more for them. i dont know much about ecomonics, but i know this system hurts poor gaians who just want to have nice items, where as opening letters at the beginning of the month might hurt richer gaians. ...i just wish people still donated because they wanted to help gaia.

You're looking at it just from the point of view of people who can afford real money donations. There are quite a few other sides, unfortunately, for example:
As it is now, letters tend to hold a stable price throughout the month until the letter is opened (although that price seems to rise every few months, especially after a really popular donation item. whee ), after which the price is in fluctuation, usually higher, until the end of that month when it starts settling down. By waiting until the end of the month to open them, people have more time to save up gold and buy their letters at the lower price before everyone goes wild over them. This can be a good or bad thing depending on whether or not the item is popular(prices rise) or unpopular(prices lower). But either way, as donation items always rise in price again eventually as they get older, people who don't like what they got can just hang on to them and sell them later. Plus there's the fun of waiting to see what's inside, like with presents. ^_^
If letters opened early, richer Gaians are unlikely to suffer because those who donate directly will still be getting at least 4k+ for their letters even if it's an unpopular item, and those who buy from marketplace just have to hold onto them long enough, or falsely inflate to get the prices they're used to, which would definitely hurt poorer Gaians. Also, it says on the Donation page that you'll get letters of the month your letter was postmarked, not received, so sending late only means it will take longer to get them.
Gaia could never survive and grow if it had to depend on the goodwill of it's users. sweatdrop Overall we're a pretty greedy society, like irl, so enticements like donation letters are really the best thing Gaia could do for itself.

sweatdrop and that makes me sad. If i ever went into business, it would be to make the consumer happy, not to make money.

Yes before I got my card my friend used to donate for me- used to give her $5 each month. She would send in a check via snail mail. So yeah whatever month the letter is post marked on- that's the month you get it for. I think one time she sent in late and we still got the previous month's letter. I donate to gaia and I've never sold a donation letter, yet. I have some extras just sitting around waiting for a day when I need more gold, but I donate because I do love the site and I do like the items. Not because I'm trying to sell them to others.
