"I'm sure Dari would help," Toby said. He knew what he imagined, but he didn't get any say. He wanted a surprise.
"It's a little film on the inside lens. We printed it out and stuck it on. I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable taking it out, so I'm not sure how much use it'll be otherwise. Sorry." He smirked and rocked slightly with her.

"I think he might," Dari had a good eye for fashion, and he'd always been able to tell her size, somehow. She was sure he'd be interested in helping her find the perfect dress.
"Yeah, don't," Maia said, shaking her head. Dari could do it--the telescope probably wouldn't function again if they fiddled with it. She looked upward for a moment, trying to catch sight of a meteor. "I've never been so happy," she said. "I've said that a lot, while I've been here with you. Every day it's true, though."

Toby smiled and stroked Maia's shoulder. Then he flopped back onto the blanket and held his arm out for her.
"Well, we have all night." Nobody had quite made him feel as special as Maia did.

Maia laid down beside Toby. Instead of watching for meteors, she was focused on Toby. She rested a hand against his chest, sliding it over his heart. "The stars remind me of you," she said. All that time they'd spent together creating new constellations and just watching the stars.

Toby turned his gaze from the sky to his... fiance. Hah! His fiance...
"They remind me of you too," he said, looking her freckled face over. She was beautiful in the moonlight. "That's why I wanted to do it now." He was glad his injuries hadn't put a damper on his plans.

"I didn't expect you to ever ask," She admitted, looking at him. She'd been so stunned by the question she'd had to read it three times before it sunk in.

He laughed and grinned. "I didn't expect to ever ask, but you're something special, Maia. I mean it. You're amazing." He stole a little kiss.

Maia smiled, and she had to wipe at her eyes again. "When did you discover that?" she asked. She moved her hand from his chest to his cheek. "I think you're special too, love."

"Discover what?" Toby asked, now propping his head up on his hand. Stars were less important than his love. He smiled and put his free hand over Maia's, then lifted it to kiss.

"That you wanted to marry me," Maia smiled at him. She didn't think they'd be paying much attention to the stars now. They'd had this issue before. Nothing else in the world--and even the universe--mattered, when they were together.

"Well, the first time we went dancing I imagined us dancing at our wedding," Toby said. He was now tracing little circles on Maia's waist. "It sort of surprised me, but it just grew from there, and I decided it was what I wanted to do, and no here we are."

"Really?" Maia asked. "The first time?" She tried to imagine Toby in a tuxedo. She smiled, brushing her had against his stubbly chin. "I don't know much about weddings," she mused. "But I know ours will be perfect."

Toby nodded. "Mmhm. The first time. I remember putting my hand on your back and imagining feeling lace. It was the strangest thing. It was like a sign." He wasn't sure he actually believed in fate and omens and signs and all that, but that was certainly what it had seemed to be.
"We can plan it together. It will be." A heart string was plucked. Carolyn had said something similar that night out on the cliffs. It was just another sign, he supposed. Carolyn would approve of this one. He wrapped his arms around Maia and held her tightly, then kissed her strongly.
Seventy-five and engaged again. Who'd have thought?

A sign, huh? She'd never expected it, Toby had surprised her. She traced his jawline with a fingernail. "White lace," She considered it. "Just clear drinks, then." She wasn't prone to spilling, but it would happen on the happiest day of her life, wouldn't it?
She smiled at him. "We don't need to plan for it to be perfect. I just need you there."

Toby shrugged. "I don't know, I think it could be fun. I've never done this before." Obviously. He leaned in to steal another quick kiss and nibbled Maia's lip playfully. "It will be perfect."
