Some distance further behind the Undead army, the Dead-men marched. Their approach had been slowed by their movement on foot, but after news had spread among the army that the Undead airship had already made contact, the army began to split up. A division of mounted troops was sent towards the city, along with 6 mages to provide shielding from cannon fire. 20 Elite Dead-men warriors charged towards the city on Demonic mounts, they were led in their assault by Xehart, supposedly the Empire's best warrior.

As they moved closer, they began to chant and whoop in excitement. They were approaching Aekea's outer wall with quite some speed. Soon they would be upon the wall, where one of two things would happen. Either they would wait for a transport from the ship to pick them up and carry them over the wall, or their mounts would be able to find grip in the wall, and scale it themselves. The mages would need no transport, they would airwalk over the wall, but they had to ensure the division remained shielded for now.

Still on the horizon the large bulk of the Dead-men army moved. Their number was so large that they truely stretched across the horizon. Their pounding feet caused an occasional tremour in the ground. As they just reached the horizon, they began to sing hymn's about their Holy War. Although it was in the Dead-men language, the message was clear. This army meant to purge the city of life.

"s**t... we got contacts on the ground, appraching the wall at high speed!"

The Captain sighed and said, "They aren't going to let up, are they? Is there gun fire going on out there?"

The radar officer nodded and said, "You know it, but I don't know if that'll cut it."

He grimaced and said, "It'll be a distraction while we get any Raptors that aren't busy on them. Besides, if they think that normal bullets are all we have, they've got another thing coming..."

Speaking of being fired upon, four .50 caliber heavy machine guns were firing away, with several 40mm grenade machine guns on standby. Not to mention that wall was not there for just show- it was thicker and higher than it looked, and they couldn't find purchase.

Those shields were a problem, though.

"Damn, they're not working! Grenades out, now," The Perimeter Defense leader shouted. The grenade machine guns opened fire, and hopefully that would work... somewhat.

--In the air--

"Switchblade, this is control, we have a positive ID on multiple hostiles attempting to enter the battle zone. Sentries have been engaged at the wall; they need some help out there."

"s**t... all right, I'm sending a section to deal with it now."

The transmission was cut as Switchblade sighed to himself. "Two of you get out there and see what's going on, the rest of us will stay here and cover our wingmen. Hotel alpha, gents."

Indeed, they did get a move on, but once they got there, what they saw did not make them happy. "Holy ******** s**t... another army."

His wingman grimaced and said, "Switchblade One, this is Switchblade Six, we have a large force incoming. Requesting permision to execute Air Interdiction, over."

Switchblade One cursed softly and said, "This just makes my day even better. Clear to engage, Six. Bomb them back to hell. Tell the guys at the wall to hang on for a bit longer."

"Copy that, engaging. Engines to maximum output, let's show 'em how fast we can run."

The two Raptors flew towards the approaching enemy forces, targeting several groups of them in preparation to drop a few greeting cards their way. If the sonic boom of a couple of jets pushing Mach 1 without the use of afterburner was not enough of a hello... the pair of two thousand pound bombs that were deployed would say it loud and clear.

Yeah, it was starting to look like Barton, with people dying and getting back up, comrades being forced to have to kill their friends or else get eaten by them. But the military base wasn't the only place affected; the downed ships had crashed elsewhere around Aekea too. The abominations on the ground continued slicing a b-line toward the base's gates. Would reinforcements make it to the gate on time? Maybe if they moved as if the wind. Firearms did not seem to be having much affect on them; even head shots weren't taking them out. The .50's did the most damage, slowing them down, but unless they were focusing fire on one at a time, simply spraying them wasn't going to stop them; and even if they were focusing fire, that left all the others to charge in and cut them down. Their hulking bodies took the punishment while they steamrolled forward, chainswords slicing and dicing. If they somehow couldn't get through the gate, they would start sawing through the wall around it.

In the air, the Wraiths suddenly broke off and dropped down toward the ground, swooping low and bearing on the ground units assaulting the abominations, strafing fire as they flew past. Don't think that the Raptors had been forgotten about. Vengeance loomed over the city now, cannons swiveling back and forth and firing at the jets as soon as the Wraiths broke off, not giving any of them time to fire their missiles.

"Captain, we have locks."

"Fire Necron Torpedos."

User Image

From the prow of the airships, several missiles of green, necrotic energy were fired out. They would track the jets and close in on them, much like their missiles had done to their fighters; but unlike the AIM-120s, these missiles locked on to life energy - they were locked onto the pilots themselves.

"Send the rest of our Wraiths. I want air superiority established already."

Another fifteen Wraiths bolted out of Vengeance's hangar; the remainder of their fighters. They swooped out in formation to take out any others Raptors still in the air, if any survived the torpedo barrage.

"Sir, we've confirmed another army approaching. It's the Dead-men."

"What?" Krik exclaimed, "Has Lament already... fallen? That was... quicker than I expected. Unless..."
PostPosted: Sun May 18, 2008 3:13 pm

"What the hell- They fired something!"

Spearhead One grimaced and said, "All wings, shake 'em! Now!"

The Raptors that were fired at began attempting to evade the torpedoes, only to find that they were relentless. "What the hell... heatseekers?"

Switchblade One looked behind him and said, "No, those don't look like any missile I've ever seen. Switchblade Six, Switchblade Three, break off the bombing run and go for maximum-performance evasion."

-The Base-

"s**t! These things don't quit!"

The heavy machine guns were working full time, but they only seemed to slow them down. Of course, the fact that the grenade machine guns were firing would have helped quite a bit, but apparently they did not cut it. "Keep firing those grenades, we're going to switch loadouts!"

Four GMGs were letting loose their barrage of boom while the gunners reloaded with something better than your standard rounds. These rounds had runes etched into the shell casings- it was the Raven Industries Special Purpose Rune round, chambered in .50 BMG.

These ones specifically were Light Rounds. They say the bigger the bullet, the bigger the bang. Well it certainly came in handy for these buggers, because the effective range of the magical detonation not only increased in strength due to the greater surface area of the shell casings (which equalled room for a more elaborate and complex spell), but increased in range. The explosion of light-based magic would have extended from five meters to fifteen.

"Reloaded. Let's see what you think of this!"

They fired.

Explosives seemed to have a much better effect! The abominations were forced to fan out as half their numbers were cut down in several blasts. The most they could do was block the grenade rounds with their swords, but the explosions threw them back. Reload time was the only chance they had at closing the distance and bringing on more hurt. Then came the light rounds, which would absolutely destroy any abominations that were hit.

In the air, the Raptors had no chance of evading the torpedos out in the open sky. The six Wraiths made another pass, strafing fire on the ground units blowing up the abominations, while the last wave of fifteen engaged any Raptors that didn't have green torpedoes chasing them, grouping up to take them two-on-one.

"Captain, second team is ready."

"What... are you waiting for?" Krik replied. "Send them... while the first team is... still walking!"

The four Spectre transports from earlier left the airship, swooping low to the ground and flying toward where the first team was. They were bringing reinforcements.

"We'll deal with... the Dead-men later. Right now... take down those planes," Krik ordered. "Lock on and... fire another volley."
PostPosted: Sun May 18, 2008 8:15 pm

"Guns are ready, sir."

The Captain nodded and said, "Just in time, I presume. More contacts?"

The radar officer nodded. "The transports are back."

The commanding officer grimaced and said, "This time, don't miss. And send out a whole squadron of the Raptors. Where are those Longbows?"

"They are in the air and about to execute Close Air Support."

The man stroked his chin for a moment and said, "Change thier orders. There are only four transports... I want at least two destroyed. Keep air defenses on orders to suppress their air power."

The Apache pilots responded immediately to their directive change. "Copy that... Hang on, I see 'em. Four contacts coming down. I'm putting a few Hydras on 'em."

Hydra 70 rockets. A reliable anti-armor solution, especially against APCs like these.

"Target locked... three rockets on point. Venom One, engaging."

"Venom Two, engaging."

And the autocannons unleashed their fury anew, focused once again on the Wraiths.

"Target locked... three rockets on point. Venom O--
"Full spread volley. Fire!" Krik shouted.

Vengeance's cannons unloaded on the new arrivals, firing a volley of negative energy rounds in a full spread, covering the transports. One of the Spectres managed to evade the rockets, while the others didn't have as much luck and took glancing blows, but remained airborne.

"Captain, we have lock."

"Fire!"

Torpedoes were fired, homing in on the Longbows.

"Shields up. Prepare for counter-attack."

Runes lit up along the hull of the Vengeance.

One of the Wraith squadrons changed tactics and went on bombing mode to take out the auto guns, while the others continued to engage the Raptors.
PostPosted: Sun May 18, 2008 11:06 pm

"Sir... the Longbows have been taken out."

The Captain clenched his right fist, his first sign of stress. "I've had enough of this airship crap. I want half of that squadron dedicated on taking out the jets and the transports, the other half focusing on finding out just how much fire that thing can handle."

Speaking of the squadron, thirty F-22s were in the air, coordinated and ready to fight. And they immediately fought back, spotting the targets attempting to take out those air defenses. "Shoot on sight, don't wait for my order. Eliminate all hostile targets, now."

The missiles were launched immediately as a few Raptors got a bead on the bombing squadron. Some of them moved to attack the airship head on, others went to aid their wingmen, and still others headed straight for the troop transports.

"What the hell... markings spotted on the airship. Be wary, people."

Base Defense

"s**t, get down!"

Another volley of gunfire rained down on them, and yet their fortifications held. Two of the grenadiers did not make it, however. "Dammit, posts five and seven are down! We need those air units killed, ASAP! Keep firing!"

And they did indeed keep up the firepower.

Perimeter Defense

The same thing was happenning to the intruders at the gates of the city, except there was a new element added to the game. As grenade launchers fired their rounds into the incoming platoon, the .50 caliber guns here at the wall had changed loadouts as well...

Special Purpose Ammuntion
RI SPR "Arc Disruptor" Rounds

A product of Raven Industries' RuneForce technology, the Speical Purpose Rune shell casings are microsopically lined with runes that are inlaid with silver. Once the firing pin hits the primer, the runes light up and endow the bullet itself with the spell. This makes it not only effective against the target itself, but effective against whatever it is weak to.

These specific rounds do not cater to a weakness, but they are nonetheless useful in defeating a mage's personal shielding by cutting off the flow of energy provided to the barrier. Any targets behind the shield are rendered vulnerable to gunfire once it is broken. Rounds are further distinguished from their counterparts by a purple tracer once they become "live", or magically enhanced.

Two of the transports were shot down, crashing before they could make it to the drop point. That didn't necessarily mean their cargo went along with it though; they were hulking half-dead brutes capable of taking a lot of punishment, after all. Of the two dozen carried inside the first transport, only half of them would survive and make their way out of the wreckage; from the second, only eight made it out.

Seventeen abominations remained from the first wave, who were only able to make any offensive action when the gunners were distracted from trying to take out the Wraiths dive bombing them. On their next pass, however, they were finally shot down. Noxious green clouds erupted from where they crashed.

Five Wraiths were shot down in the dog fight, but the remainder continued hounding the Raptors. The ten engaging Vengeance were about to find out what despair really felt like. The airship's cannons continued firing, targeting more anti-air guns. It seemed to be ignoring the Raptors for now, no doubt because any rounds fired toward the massive vessel seemed to vanish before hitting its mark, and any of the guns that had fired at it would suddenly get jammed with a double feed, or, at worst, explode.

"Get mages on deck, man the guns," Captain Krik ordered. "Show the humans what it means to despair. Prepare to send down the next wave."

Xehart's team at the gate were nearing the wall, when they heard the pounding of gunfire. Of course, the team would not simply have stood there and waited for the army to begin firing Grenades, or indeed Arc rounds. That would be completely illogical. The small tactical force had their fire mages aim at the guns, and began to incinerate them.

The mages didn't need to completely obliterate the guns, no, in fact all they had to do was target the very front of the guns, and destroy the firing barrel just enough, that any future projectiles sent down it, would explode in the barrel, damaging it even further. Of course, in the case of grenades, that was probably a very bad thing.

Xehart however, ignored the mages taking on the guns, and looked at the city wall, looking for any kind of gap that could be used as a handhold along the wall. All he needed were a few placed here or there, not even relatively close to one another. Fifteen foot apart would do the Dead-man.

But wait, what would that mean exactly.

That would mean that all those bullets flying at them would not have any affect, right? No. Something had to hit sometime. A round that was dedicated to bypassing shielding would obviously do something before the small force got there.

Regardless, the situation was not looking good in mid-air. Screams of surprise and curses were heard from the Raptors as their weapons systems were entirely disabled. Some of them were destroyed outright, while others had their guns disabled via jamming. The displacement spell was doing its work handily.

The Captain called Durem once again to see if there was anything thought of yet.

"Deploy the remainder of our troops," Captain Krik ordered. "Mr. Smock, ready the main cannon."

"Aye, captain."

Portals opened in the streets with hordes of undead pouring out, attacking anyone nearby. Fireballs and lightning bolts and missiles of energy streaked through the air as mages cast spells and gave support. Black robes Clerics of Dark Eternal kept the hordes in check and kept them protected. Out of another portal came hulking constructs made from a patchwork of stitched together flesh and tissue, and a huge earth necromental - an undead earth elemental that looked like a walking cemetery, with tombstones and corpses sticking out of the black earth that composed its body.

On deck, the anti-aircraft guns were firing away at the Raptors still in the air, still being hounded by Wraiths.

The Dead-men would reach the wall with very little resistance remaining, the main guns of the city having been destroyed, or at least, all those in range. As soon as the small group reached the wall they came across a problem. None of them would be able to cross it, or atleast, none of the warriors. The mages all dismounted, and then seemed to stand around for a few moments, before stepping into the very air itself, and walking straight up, and onto the wall.

This would cut the groups size in half, leaving the 10 warriors in the group behind, and leaving Xehart, four fire mages, two necromancers, two extra body mages, and a bone mage. The group reached the wall and immediatly began assaulting the city below. The three body and bone mages maintained shields on the rest of the mages, while the fire mages began assaulting as many aircraft as they could, an easy target, as the craft would explode due to high fuel content. The necromancers meanwhile began to spread plague gas throughout the city blocks below, hoping to kill as many civilians as possible.

Xehart however, simply watched. He seemed to be gathering energy, while stroking his small toy doll at the same time. He had a large grin upon his face, soon he would bathe in the blood of the innocent. It was almost magical. After a few minutes of spreading the fast acting plague gas, the team would descend to street level, the fire mages continuing to attack any aircraft, the Necromancers attempting to ressurect any bodies, and Xehart moving in the lead of the group, removing his white robe at the same time.

Reyin Nova wasn't doing much. Life in Aekea was pretty dull, what with his only real time-killing activity being the on and off bartender at the Armory Bar & Smithy (and sometimes Deli).

He was currently lounging out in the rear courtyard of the establishment that doubled as his house, resting on a picnic table with his right hand tucked behind his head and his left laid flat across his stomach.

The young swordsman didn't really seem too concerned as s**t went flying around and exploding overhead, or that a lot of screams were echoing from the streets nearby as zombies tore up the neighborhood.

Nope, all was well and peaceful in Reyin's world, 'cause the blonde kid was fast asleep.

Well now the Strykers would have more to worry about than just all that other crap. They'd have to worry about the ground teams that were advancing too. This was turning into a real mess, but it's not like it hasn't happened before.

"What are you standing there for? Open fire on them now!"

The Dead-Men were basically about to get severely hit by something other than just a few bullets. The TOW missile launchers mounted on those armored personnel carriers would do some severe damage to anything that wasn't covered by a shield.

And how were they going to take care of the shielding? Simple.

But first things first- the plauge gas. That wasn't so simple. Anything without a gas mask would die, easily. Depending on what the stuff was made of though, the masks would not matter. Skin contact was an issue as well. But never mind- for now we assume that anything that breathes it in is dead.

In that case, it was a good idea to order all soldiers on chemical alert before they left the base. Their masks would save their asses.

And while all this was happenning, Force Reconnaisance had arrived. It was easy to come into the city from an entirely different angle, other than the one the Dead-Man army was taking. Based on the information they had been given, the army was entering from the north.

They came in from the southwest of the city, and were on their way now.

They had shielding countermeasures for the ground troops, seeing as intellingence had kindly reminded them that the ship had shields, and had assumed anything trying to enter would have them as well.

Their armored vehicles were a hell of a lot tougher than the Strykers... and they moved like nothing else. In the next twenty minutes, they would assume positions over the enemy and begin firing down on them.

So basically the base's APCs were there for a distraction. How long they would last depended on the tactics the enemy used.
