WOOMPH

A black wave of negative energy burst from the golem's form as it released another automatic pulse. It charged head-on at Maximos, claws swinging in to slam him viciously. Without any direction, it would fight mindlessly, without any tactics. Just as long as it hit something.

Owle Isohos
((Everyone with a soul within five blocks of the Barton East gate, the last bit of this post is for you.))

"Me neither," Owle replied, staring at the carnage with a sickening feeling in her gut. "I hope Rain's okay in there..." she muttered, then took in a big mental breath.

"Kalis...I don't feel many souls in there. That means robots, or undead, or something else. Things that can't hear me..."

As they neared the city, she was catching glimpses of the zombie horde, taking note of their (presumed) lack of mindsouls.

"Hey! Anybody alive in there! Respond if you're injured and in need of aid!"

She shouted the telepathic message, letting it ring through the east side of Barton for anyone who had a soul. Those it reached would hear the woman's voice in their head, and find themselves able to respond with a thought alone.

((It's safe for me to assume there are random severely injured but still alive NPCs about, right?))

"H-help me!"

The injured man cried out, his leg mangled horribly, most likely by the car that was sitting on top of it. Being a very simple man, he didn't know that thought alone would work, so air escaped him to produce the sound.

"I-I'm stuck!"

Kchain could see and hear the man, having been responsible for the car on top of him, albeit indirectly. What had happened, was, Kchain, frustrated by his puppets failure, put three rounds into a fleeing vehicle which had consequently hit the man and caused this little injury.

He was hidden, of course, peeking through a random window, especially since the arrival of a psychic. Knowing that his thoughts might be read, he put up a fairly simple mental block, strong enough to block any straightforward attempt to read his mind, yet mundane enough to avoid suspicion or anything.

He waited, and watched.

Owle got off faster than a bolt of lightning, practically shooting off the infernal contraption. She had gotten more used to it thanks to spending time with various people who owned such two wheelers, but that didn't make her like it any more, or fear it all the much less.

"No, these are different," Owle answered him. She shook her head. "The ones in Agrippina had a mind...a single mind. These are...soulless. Mindless."

She, too, surveyed the scene, her supernatural senses spreading out to look for anything still alive in the area. Anyone with magical senses or spirit vision would see the ethereal golden snakes slithering away from her, through the city. Invisible to the normal eye, these snakes were a part of Owle's very being, and would be able to detect any unshielded, living soul (and possibly the souls of lingering or powerful dead) that they came across.

Before they had covered even one block, Owle pulled them back, listening to the voice along the channel.

"Maximos? Is that you? Where are you?"

"What do you mean?"

"Are you..."
And her voice was tinged with horror as her eyes took in the chaos, realizing what it could mean. "...the only one left alive here?"

Of course she recognized him; it wasn't so much his voice that stood out, but the feel of his mind, sort of dark and shadowy and slippery, but in a way that was interesting rather than unpleasant. If Owle had known what Gak was, she might have made the comparison. It was a reflection of how Owle perceived him, rather than a reflection of what he was.

But what did he mean, one remaining? Could it really be... And Owle's stomach knotted at the thought. That he's the only one left alive? That I'm too late?

"H-help me!"

"I-I'm stuck!"

Owle's heart leapt anew, and she turned to Kalis, smiling just slightly. "Got one," she told him, proudly.

"Where are you?" she sent back to the man, though she was already following her sense of his mind toward him. In some ways, Owle was like a supernatural bloodhound...once she got a mind's "scent", she could track it down, getting an accurate sense of which direction it was in and a vague notion of how far away it was.

"Are there any zombies around you?" she prompted the injured man, wanting to make sure before she proceeded incautiously. Halfway to there, she realized she was still wearing the jacket, which obscured her scaled shoulders and tiny brown feathered wings. The motorcycle helmet still rested atop her blue hair. Ah, well, no time to take them off now...

If she wasn't so focused on finding the injured man, she would have sensed Kchain. As it was, though, Owle was relying on her eyes to tell her where the threats were.

Ryugi was right. His slash wouldn't do much of anything against the boneyard. The section he had blasted away with his sword simply reformed moments later with bones filling in the gap. He was too fast and far away now for it to pursue him though, and so the boneyard began looking for other targets. When it found nothing, it simply returned to being a pile of bones, and would lay dormant until something came to disturb it. With the drow it had consumed earlier, its hunger would be put at bay... for now.

"N-no... the guy in the c-c-car is dead..."

The man writhed a little, his leg bleeding although somewhat staunched by the tire.

Kchain was still watching, quietly drawing a sword and clicking the safety off of his gun.

Yes...I am...alone...

Maximos met is foe in kind. Its negative energy wave countered the Positive Energy wave. His skin split wider and deeper, the blood flow increasing and a few sharp pangs ripping up his left arm. The two waves would simply cancel each other other.

...umph...at the...

If the Golem was going to charge, so was the Shadow, he took a quick inventory of the ground finding the broken and battered remains of what was an 6ftI-Beam. And gripped it in his right, and then charge back at the metal monstrosity.

The creature slashed, he brought the beam across his chest letting the creatures claw strike it. His left and right arm attempted to absorb the impact, though only one arm was truly up to the task, his left gave, while his right remained strong. The beam, smacked against his chest with brutal force. His feet ground to a halt, he gritted his teeth, the pearly whites stained pink.

..grrk...East Gate....

And with a stern downward motion he slammed right down in an attempt to divert the claw into the ground. Giving him a platform on which to run up, and an angle at which to deliver a powerful left to right slam at the golem's head. Hopefully crushing it like a really strong tin can.

"You don't sound good..." Owle sent to Maximos, looking around for any sign of him. She heard the sounds of battle not far off, but her view was obscured by the rubble.

"You need help?"

She was torn, momentarily, between helping a total stranger and leaping in to help Maximos. But the stranger was alone, while she could still clearly hear the sounds of some sort of conflict from the direction Maximos was in.

That decided her. She'd check the condition of the injured stranger, quickly, then run to help Maximos. If the Reaper said he needed her now, though, she'd abandon her course of action.

The woman broke into a run, scaled and clawed feet clacking on the rubble, as she moved as quickly as she could toward the injured stranger. Soon, she came within sight of the car, and, without slowing her pace, hastened to reach the victim beneath it.

The man groaned, and waved his arms at the woman, desperate for her to help in whatever way possible. "I'm over here!"

Kchain smiled at the appearance of the girl, and quietly jogged away from the window, making his way down the stairs, quiet as a mouse.

The opposing forces cancelled each other out. The golem's head jerked from the force of the impact, which would have probably torn a normal, flesh and blood creature's head right off. Shadesteel was hardly tin though, and though the blow did leave an impressive welt in the construct's face, it'd absorb the blow in stride, making a full attack against Maximos in retaliation with both its hands and feet claws, attacking him savagely.

"Look at that. God damn."
"No kidding. What the hell am I seeing?"
"Maybe it's a riot."
"Pretty bad riot."
"No kidding."
"How many civilians do you think there are?"
"How many do you think are alive or haven't run from that?"

Flying in from the southeast at an altitude of a thousand feet, the Deity Charon transport was low enough to make out rank and file marching formations going down the street. Broken buildings and other hints of the shitstorm were easily seen with the naked eyes looking out the hatch of the transport.

The pilot knew about the airship another 19,000 feet above and didn't give it much thought. Being pretty much directly below it kept missiles from being all that effective. Plus it was a blimp; they were a scramjet aircraft.

"Holy crap. Zombies?"
"Stop screwing around."
"No, really, look. Those are so zombies."
"Get your s**t together."
"Dia de los muertos?"
"We ain't in Mexico."
"Seriously. Check the scopes; they're cold."

Moving slow for an aircraft, the military transport was headed for downtown Barton. Merely passing over the shitstorm in the square.

Inside six men and several tons of equipment were waiting to be deployed on the Deity Office. Everywhere else had to fend for itself.

Maximos
And with a stern downward motion he slammed right down in an attempt to divert the claw into the ground. Giving him a platform on which to run up, and an angle at which to deliver a powerful left to right slam at the golem's head.

Having run up the creatures arm, its attack opportunities were limited by reach if nothing else. The idea of its feet reaching him was unlikely, as was the idea of the arm he was standing, as should it move, it would force him off the golem to begin with since he was using it as footing.

I am fine...

He said, along the telepathic channel. He was running up the constructs arm, with his right holding the i-beam across and to the left. His swing was a wide sideways swing, while he moved. His motion would carry him up onto the creatures shoulder, where he would immediately break off to its left side, his feet kicking off the metal just as its claw ripped through the air shredding streaks across the back of his vest, red staining its claws. He jumped off its shoulder and twisting in air to face its left side. Both arms meeting on the I-Beam, and swinging down with all the strength he could muster, at its left shoulder. Attempting to break the arm off at the joint with a downward pop.

Oh, he knew it wasnt tin. But he could certainly hope.

...save the living.

The Vengance wasn't a blimp at all, unless blimps now came heavily armed and armor plated, with a massive armament of long-range weapons, complex instruments and machinery that combined arcane magic with technological design, and a hangar full of interceptor fighters.

"Captain, incoming bogey."

"On screen."

A glowing, transluscent window appeared with a birds-eye view of Barton Town, and the Deity Charon transport flying over. They seemed to be passing through though, and didn't look to pose any threat to the airship high above them.

"Orders, captain?"

"Open hailing frequencies," Captain Krik ordered, and the skeleton at the comms complied, giving him a nod to go ahead. "This is Captain James Krik of the Battle-Airship Vengeance. Identify yourselves."

The blow sent sparks flying as the I-beam scraped across the golem's shoulder with the strike, shoving it down toward the ground, rending a deep scratch in the alloy. It grabbed at the beam with its other claw, intending to swing Max around on it and swing him into some remains of a nearby wall.

"Alright," Owle sent back to Maximos. Her tone was resolute, but there was an undercurrent of worry about him that wasn't going to be displaced. "You take care of yourself. And if you need me, you know how to reach me."

She continued at a run to the injured man's side, and, if she reached him unmeddled with, she would kneel by him.

"Kalis, help me with this..." she said, placing both hands beneath the tire as if she were going to lift it. After all, she couldn't very well tend to the man's leg if it were being crushed.
