"Who are you, and...
what are you?"
The voice, or voices, or voice which was made up of many different voices, replied promptly. "We are called the Oracle. We are privy to the knowledge of ages long past, and of ages yet to come. We see all that has been, and all that will be. We are a creation of Gaia, and We know all of Her works well."
"Could you tell us things about the past?"
"Or the future?"
"We cannot. When the world began and We were new, We were free to divulge any informations which were asked of Us, but that age has long since passed. We live an existence now which is a pale shade of what We once were."
"Are you a god?" "Or... goddess?"
"We are neither male nor female. We are a collective body of all knowledge within this world of creation," the Oracle paused, "Yes, We are a god of sorts. We have been worshipped in the past."
"Is that why you're here? Did the people who built this temple worship you?"
The reply was loud, as of many voices arguing all at once. "NO!"
"Then why are you here?"
"In a time before all recollection besides those of gods, when humans were new to the world, it was fast becoming clear that not all of those in existence were of the character Gaia had desired. Those were the days when my knowledge and power was freely given, and some realised that We could be used as a weapon."
"But it was not so simple. We were a free being, and Our power belonged to all humans, gods, and other creatures. It proved very difficult for one person or group of people to monopolise Us. They sought, however, for a way, and eventually they found one. Our energies were subsequently bound within a human, to be called forth into the form you see before you now whenever desired."
"Gaia was furious at the greed of humans, and shortly after departed the world. But before She did, She placed an unbreakable curse upon Us. No longer were We to freely reveal the secrets of the universe. No longer were We to fulfill the nature for which We had been created, for allowing such knowledge into the hands of enemies would have been a cause of utter destruction."
"The people who had bound Us to Our avatar discarded Us once they found We could no longer fulfill Our purpose. We were released into the world, and wandered the lands of Gaia for many years, until We were once again captured. These enemies replicated the magical technology originally used to imprison Us, and harnassed Our energies to power their mountainous temple."
"Do you know of the Overseer?"
"I created Him."
"You created the Overseer?!"
"We did, as well as His polar opposite, the Sentinel. But We are no true force of creation, and therefore they are not nearly as powerful as gods should be. They are... half-gods."
"Even though We know everything, We do not
understand everything. We certainly did not understand the conflicting forces exercised upon Us in the early centuries of Our existence - We are no true god ourselves. We are merely a repository of information: that was the purpose for which We were originally created. To allow us to better understand Ourselves, We created embodiments of these forces - one of Chaos, the other Law."
"So you are the father - or mother - of the Overseer... it's no wonder we were drawn here." "That
is why we were drawn here, isn't it, Oracle?"
"Yes."
"Would you say that you are an embodiment of both chaos and law, if both of them came from you?"
"Neither of these forces came from Us, they simply acted upon Us when We were a Free Being. We do not understand what We are anymore, for We have fallen outside of our Purpose. We are not what we once were. We are simply an existence, unable to fulfil our duty, bound to a frail physical life, unable to die and unable to move on."
"This is all very fascinating, but please, can you tell us how we can heal Luathrae?"
"The poison which afflicts her was created through Our power. We shall remove it now, and it shall be as if it never existed at all."
BLAH BLAH BLAH. BLAH BLAH BLAH. This is all very well and good, but what about that wish?!
