Geees.... sweatdrop I remember checking in this morning and nothing changed since i went to bed. Now i come back home and theres 5-6 page worth of reading. Post whores! gonk

Hrm, its kinda hard to test a Katana against bullets though. Theres not enough ironsmith that would go that far to create katana for that kind of abuse and dishonor. Even to prove his ability to make one. It just wouldnt be the same. I still wonder why they used a .50cal Browning machine gun? Mythbuster also used the same weapon. It would be more appropriate to use the M1 Garand as it was most Marine's choice of weapon. Wait, no. Garand had the advantage of rapid fire, lets try the Springfrield M1903, a bolt action rifle.

With an M1903 would the Japanese get close enough to switch to full kamikaze attack, katana ready. But then again, only Officers possess them. I would like to see a test performed on these two rifles instead of a Browning machinegun.

Kudos to the Rabbit.

I want to cry after watching some of those martial arts clips. I have to say "ZOMGWTFBBQ!?!?!?!?" Holy tiny pieces of raw fish... it was horrible. Person dualing with katana. Thats a no no already. Wrong stance and technique for that type of weapon. He did do one or two rights but oh god. And the other one Aileen posted... im not even going to comment.

Im fascinated with the Japanese swordsmanship but it doesnt benefit for today's era. If anything, I'll stick to MCMAP.

Well, in a good way, the techniques are fine. The bad way... the teaching is, eick..... sweatdrop Then again, thats just me. Im sure you might find something on YouTube if you search for MCMAP or Marine martial arts. Then you'll see what i meant.

Ah, these aren't teachings so much as demonstrations held at various parts of the world. 3nodding Teaching is different.

Even for demostrations, it looks alot like a "skit" sweatdrop The offender kept rolling off volunteerly a little too much. That kind of killed the mood.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:32 pm

hehe, that's what I said at first glance ^^ I got to experience it firsthand, from my instructor. "Volunteering" is not what it is. "Getting the hell away from the man who has complete control over whether you survive, lose a limb, or die in the next few seconds" or "laughing to yourself because you've just been shown how much of an idiot you were to try that" is more correct. I think you'd see it if you watched the intent of Ryabko's motions carefully, and killed the audio.

Aye aye, i know what you mean. "Volunteering" may have been a bad choice of word. Like i said, the techniques are fine. Just the demostrations kinda of set me off. The video is the only glimps i've seen.

~5 minutes difference~
Im watching more vids as i type. What i see most often is grabbing by the wrist at its pressure point and twisting the arm. Most demonstration, its almost already known what the attack is and what defence will be used.

~yet to find one that seems to have a good demonstration~ The endurance was good though. Getting punched in the naval.

But most demostration only shows the offender peforming basic to intermediate attacks with/without weapon. It shows too much of the First defence to be successful. Havent come across any clip that showed a Second defence incase the first one failed, and continue on.

If it were me, i'd prefer demonstration on someone with equal near enough skill. I just gotta see the effectiveness faught against someone with equal capabilities in the same style or different one. Perhaps i'll come across a good vid because lord knows i wont find anyone nearby to actually experience first hand.

So far, i've only been victim to Brasil Capoeira, Akido, Tae Kwon Do, Karate and kung fu. Of all that, i got ******** up the most in Capoeira. Just because i had no idea where i was supposed to go so i had a few foot to the face.

And its getting late... early.... something, in the morning for me. Heading to bed. Good night, bid thee farewell.

Hold up, just came across a clip one disarming a guy with a knife. That was sweet. That one looks painful. Impact on the lower waist, inside elbow, and couldnt see the last motion after the horizontal elbow thrust, bad camera angle.

Only demonstrations I've ever seen that weren't really, bogus, looking, involved the expert Marine Hand to Hand training.

Well, I shouldn't be surprised. xd There are many martial art practitioners who have seen Systema in the way you're describing, Thrie. So there are many things I needed to explain about it that I didn't and should have. sweatdrop

Keep in mind I'm not a practitioner of Systema, just a practitioner of a martial art that shares very similar philosophies and is really poorly represented on the internet.
  • There are two main types of martial 'action': External (like karate, jeet kune do, tae kwon do, and savate) where the emphasis is on hard, forceful punches and kicks designed to directly damage your opponent, and Internal (like jiu jitsu, tai chi, aikido, and ba gua zhang) where the emphasis is on redirection of your opponent's attack, keeping them off balance, with soft, flexible movements that depend on the sensitivity and awareness of the practitioner.
  • Systema is an Internal martial art which is designed to be used in a real combat situation.
  • It has no kata, only exercise drills which encourage you to adapt to ever changing conditions. These drills start in slow motion, then increase in speed as the practitioner becomes more proficient.
  • It is designed for a minimum of movement, and designed to quickly reduce opponents to non-threats.
  • There aren't many special moves. Emphasis is on developed awareness, intent, and sensitivity.
  • Those martial artists in the video are practiced in their art. Mikhail Ryabko just shuts them down completely before they're able to do much anything about it. He does it slowly, as in their exercise drills. EDIT: though looking at the clip I linked last time, he may have been asking them to come at him with a type of strike.

Vladimir Vasilev, Mikail Ryabko's best student and head of their North American branch, might be more to your liking though. He tends to show the art with more flash, and at close to combat speed.
