By the time Josh returned, David was standing between the computer desk and the refridgerator, staring hard at Bethany. She had planted herself up against the counter, her hand on the drawer that held all of her kitchen knives. It was a silent stand-off.
Bethany finally cleared her throat. "David, take the guest room across the livingroom, opposite from Josh." she said, glancing between the two men to see what, if anything was going to happen.
David sneered at her before walking out of the kitchen, bumping into Josh on his way to the third bedroom, not even bothering to aplogize.

"Sorry for being in your way kind sir." I said trying to regain my normal attitude. I walked over to Bethany "If you're wanting to cure him you should start now, I have a feeling that he does not like being one of my kind. Though from what I have heard I can hardly blame him." I looked Bethany and she still looked a bit frightened. "Are you sure you're ok Bethany?" I asked.

She wastched David warily leave, nodding, though she smelled like a scared prey ready to be taken down. "J-just a little nervous is all... I-i'll get breakfast started so you aren't late to work..." she said, taking her hand off of the drawer. The red handprint on her face was slowly starting to turn into an ugly-looking bruise.

I eyed the bruise forming on her cheek. "No need to make breakfast for me or dinner tonight, I'll be doing my own hunt tonight, the mistress will be in all her glory this night. While I'm at work if he tries anything just blow the whistle, it not only will tell me you need help but also stun him for a good deal of time." I told her as I went to my room across from David's and put my shoes on. I looked at the clock and saw I had a good half hour to mkae it to the bookstore. "I'll be going now and remember the whistle Bethany, I don't think I would like to have to kill the pup for harming you again." I said as I slipped on my gloves and walked outside.

Bethany nodded nervously, giving Josh a weak smile as she waved to him. As soon as Josh was out the door, Bethany grabbed some pop-tarts out of the cabinet, and scurried up to the attic, locking the attic door behind her.

I left Bethany's house hoping David would be a good little pup. "Well might as well get to work." I said as I began to jog towards the bookstore. Upon reaching the bookstore there was another note on the door.
Dear Joshua, today I need you to clean the inside of the shop for me. When you're done with that then you can just read books, and watch the cash-register until your shift is over. Thank you so much.
I chuckled as I read the letter twice. I walked into the bookstore and grabbed the book I had seen the day before and set it on the counter. While I cleaned up the room and washed the windows I hummed old tunes, that made reminded me of my days of travel with my father.

Bethany was working hard on the cure for David, that when there was a knock on the attic door, she jumped and fell out of her chair.
"Beth, it's me..." David said through the door.
Bethany picked herself up off of the floor, the whistle in one hand, and walked over to the door. "What?" she asked through it, not unlocking or opening it.
"I... just want to apologize for earlier... can you let me in, please?" He asked.
She hesitated, then sighed. "Hang on..." she whispered as she quietly walked back over to the desk and picked up a small silver paperweight and tucked it into her back pocket. Then she unlocked the attic and just barely opened it.
On the other side, David looked at her with sad, repentant eyes. "I'm truely am sorry... I don't know what came over me... Friends?" he asked, holding out one hand.

It didn't take long for me to finish cleaning the store so I sat down with the story book I had thought interesting earlier. It was mostly a picture book more for children than adults but the story it told captured me as if my mind was in the grip of a boa named intrigue. Surprisingly the story had much more depth to it than I would have expected from a children's book. The story told of a wolf-man, bear-man, lizard-man, bat-woman, and a regular man traveling on a journey to regain a moon that had lost it's way; but through out the story I had a feeling I had seen this story somewhere. After I finished the story I set it back on the shelf and just picked up a random book about a man in space. Looking at the clock as I sat down with the new book, thats when a cutomer walked in.
I stood up straight and set the book down. "Hello may I help you?" I asked while the woman looked uninterested at the selection of books. She turned to me and asked ,"Do you have a novel known as the Discworld?" I nodded as I wakled to the fiction side of the store and pulled out a book. "Here you go miss." We walked to the counter and I said "That will be $15.50, miss." she dug out the money handed it to me and left with the book. "At least one customer came today." I said picking the book I had when she came in and sat down. "Hmmm......Under the Moons of Mars...." I read the title outloud.

Bethany hesitated, looking down at the hand offered to her, and then put the dog whistle in her pocket and put her hand into his to shake. In a blur of motion, David spun Bethany around and wrapped his arm around her neck, choking her. "Where is it?"
Gasping and gagging for air, Bethany didn't point, but took the silver paperweight in her other hand and slammed the fist up and back, hitting David on the forehead.
David howled as the smell of burning flesh hit the air, and he let go of Bethany, who stumbled forward, clutching a hand to her throat. "You b***h! I'm going to kill you now!" he growled.
Bethany turned around just as the lycan leaped at her. She pulled the whistle out of her pocket and blew with all the force left in her aching lungs. David howled in pain and crumpled to the floor stunned. bethany's eyes were wide with fear as she slammed the apaperweight down on his head over and over while breathing through the whistle, causing it to sound near-continiously, even after the head was not much more that a battered and bloody pulp on the attic floor.

I heard the whistle and was out the door in a flash. Running through the crowd, dodging people and jumping over cars. When I finally made it to Bethany's house I was almost deaf from the constant ringing from the whistle. I ran up stairs and found Bethany hitting a mass of blood, that I could only assume was a head. I grabbed the paperweight and felt the massive burning sensation lance through my arm, silver....perfect. "Bethany it's ok I think you took him down. What happened?"

Her hands went down one more time, even though the paperweight was no longer in her hands, and the whistle fell out of her mouth. Tears ran down her face as she stared at the body quietly for a moment, her body shaking in fear. "H-he... he was... going to... kill me..." she whispered, her voice shaking. She started rocking back and forth where she sat ont he floor, the realization that she had just killed someone, even in self defense, hitting her hard, as if she was going into shock.

"It's alright Bethany, you did only what you could have done at the time." I said soothingly as I set the paperweight down on her desk and looked at my scorched hand. I picked the whistle up and put it in my pocket. "Bethany go down stares and make some hot cocoa the old fashioned way, you need to take your mind off this for a few mintues. I'll clean this up while you make the cocoa." I said as I tried to lift her to her feet.

Bethany offered no resistance as he pulled her up onto her feet. She nodded numbly and walked quietly down the stairs and to the kitchen, as if in a trance, and got out everything she needed to make old fashioned cocoa for two. The only thing that gave her away as being afraid was her shaking hands and her scent.

I watched as she went downstairs in a trance. Sighing I turned back to the mess before me. "You sure know how to defend yourself Bethany." I muttered as I began picking skull fragments and tossing them into a trashcan nearby. It took me a while to clean the of the bloody head of David, but eventually I got it to where all I needed to do was scrub the blood out of the floor and bury the body. I walked down stairs "Bethany do you have a shovel and carpet cleaning kit?" I asked walking into the kitchen.

Bethany jumped at the sound of Josh's voice. "Cl-cleaner? Um... th-the hall closet..." she stammered. "Sh-shovel is in th-the ga-garage..." she said as she stopped stirring the cocoa in the pot.
