The main problem is that it defeats the original purpose of the morning star and hatchet.
Look at each weapon individuall, they are at the root a mass on the end of a stick. Because their mass is located farther away from what is the lever, where you hold it, there is more momentum and kinetic energy for the blow.
Now add a counter weight just bellow where you hold it, now the cernter of gravity his shifted and you don't have as much kinetic force as you did originally.
