A shirasaya is 'plain-scabbard'. No wrappings on the grip, no guard, scabbard usually isnt laquered. Its basically a blade starage no intended for actual combat 'cause it lacks handgrips and a guard. Scabbard is breathable because it doesnt have a finish, which allows the metal to breathe and prevents/slows down deterioration of the blade.

so in other words it is a katana, but one made more so for decoration then actual application...

Shirasayas are blade storages. Though you could technically use it for combat, it isnt advised since lacking wraps, grip could slip, and lacking a guard, thrusting becomes dangerous since objects which are too solid may cause someone's hands to slip and slice their own fingers off.
They're so plain you cant really call them decorational.
And I'm only intrerested in practical blades anyway.

oh, that's what they are? pardon my using games as a point of reference, but ukyo tachibana has the same kinda weapon, set in a drying pole or something. so now, i have a proper name for it.

ahh...I thought of getting a broadsword because I just love the thing and it's good forearm training when it's nicely weighted but I got lazy towards kung fu in general.
But I like the broadsword and the General Quan? sword or however it is called.
