Cale Darksun
oh I could.
a nobody pilot killed Ulic Quel-Droma.
Hey FP, did you assemble your uber weapon or dig it up on blackmoon?
hey Nelo, can one detect the shards through the force? or is it limited by proximity?

The shards cannot be detected through the Force. Especially if one tries to search for them. (kinda like finding the philosopher stone...) Which is why they are so hard to find.
However, there is a way to find them, with the force. But it only works if it is in somebody's possession.
How to put it.
If Cale, lets say, holds them in hsi pocket, his hand, around his neck, etc., the shards can be detected, because they are bolstered by the power of the force around them. Meaning that they must be near somehting imbued with the force (such as a lucky outlaw, or a jedi master) to emit a signal. Like how a flashlight needs a battery. The stronger the force near it, and the more pieces gathered, the stronger the beacon. However, it must be within physical reach to be sensed.
Like the shards on the Kapella pretty much never give off any signal, unless the crew touch them for research. Cales (I assume) is like a constant beacon.
If they are not near anything living, they emit no aura to find. However, they have a knack for not being totally impossible to find or be lost. As if they had a mind of their own.
