Toby tried to keep his smile under control, but it was clearly struggling at the corners of his mouth. Even Dari seemed amused, but they all were apparently too polite to laugh outright at a teenager. He nodded.
"I'm sure it would have gone differently then," Toby said. Specifically, he'd have been dead before he transformed or while transforming, and that was no fun, but Kevin didn't need to know that.

Kevin nodded; see? There was always another way, a way to keep his agent werewolf from getting shot. "When do you get out of here? I learned to make noodles from a box."

"Uh... I'm not sure?" Toby looked to Dari as if he might know more, and Dari just shrugged. "Probably in the next few days. What, do you want to make us mac and cheese?" From a box, it had to be, or else it was plain pasta. He had to teach Kevin how to test the doneness of spaghetti. He'd probably enjoy it.

Kevin frowned slightly. "No," he corrected, "I want to make you mac and cheese." He glanced at Maia, and then Dari. "I suppose they can come too."

Now Toby snickered.
"Oh! Oh, I see how it is," he said, "It's kind of you to invite them too."
Dari shook his head and laughed. Sooner rather than later, he would be buying a game system for that little s**t. Maybe that'd get him in easy on mac n' cheese night.

"Can I bring it here? I heard hospital food is the worst. Maybe tomorrow? Hm... No. Then I'd have to carry four plates. Maybe if I carry the pan... But are there plates here?" Kevin looked around, but all he saw was hospital equipment. "How about when you get out? You can tell me when."

Toby just let Kevin ramble and then nodded.
"Yeah, I think we should wait until I'm out." The hospital food here was the same as the cafeteria food, but he had faith that Dari or Maia might bring him some real food once in a while. "I promise to tell you when."

It wasn't until the next day when Maia remembered how much Toby hated cafeteria food. She'd gone home to clean up some; and then to cook a maybe excessive amount of food. She made stir fry and enough cookies to fill a large tupperware bowl.
When she returned to HQ, she went into Toby's hospital room. "I hope I got here before they brought your lunch," she said. "This is better."

"They tried to make me eat it," Toby said, "It was terrible." He was only teasing, but he did light up at the appearance and scent of actual food. They were still giving him fluids and he was still regaining his strength, so they said one more day should have him all set. Lori had come to show him a video of Dari's treatment. It had made his skin crawl, just a little, but if he was going to be trusting anyone to give his blood back after stealing it, it'd be Dari.
"Oh, love, I can't even tell you-- I love you." He reached up and grabbed Maia's head to bring it down and kiss her.

"Did they poison you with coffee, too?" Maia teased. She was glad to see him in good spirits. She opened the two bowls and set them on Toby's bedside table. She returned the kiss, letting it linger before smiling at him. "I love you too," She said. "I thought you might be tired of what they've been giving you," she smiled.
"You get to come home tomorrow?" she asked.

"No. They don't want my heart rate elevating, so that's my savior," he said, nodding his head toward the heart monitor. He took the stir fry and started in, took his first bite, wiggled his toes, and gave a happy-yummy sound.
"Thank you, Love, thank you." He kissed Maia again. "And yes. Tomorrow. I think I'm good to go, but it turns out I don't get a say." He took another bite.
"Ivy came by. Poor thing. Did you meet her?"

Maia smiled, returning this kiss too. He was so happy to have actual food! He'd be spoiled once he was able to come home.
"I did, she came in before. She seems a bit overwhelmed," Maia seemed concerned. "Maybe I should get to know her." Offer some cookies, trade stories.

"Well she's never really been outside the forest. You can't blame her," Toby reasoned. "She's here until her stitches come out, so feel free. She was very polite in declining letting a big hairy elf touch her belly."

"Poor thing," Maia understood the feeling. "Magical healing is weird, even when you know the person." She kissed his cheek. "I brought chocolate chip cookies, too."

"Maybe I just don't have any shame," Toby said with a smile. He nodded then to the cookies. "Oh, don't worry, I see them. They're my next target. What's the date?" There was no slow change of subject, just a sudden flip.
