@Magni: Did Recuva help your situation any?

Unfortunately, no. The files are 'unrecoverable.' I deeply appreciate the effort, but all that work is well and truly gone. The program tried, but all that came out was garbage- unreadable. *sighs* I've come to terms with the loss . . . and realistically they were files I was not likely to ever open again with the exception of one. Still, 11 years worth of my work . . . gone. It is a bitter pill to swallow. There was a significant amount of pride in there.
Welcome, KiingIzzy. Always nice to see a new face.

I'm really sorry to hear that. sad
Did the store trade you for another new PC or refund you?

We just did a refund... it had only been a week, and the receipt was still easy to find. Despite my wife's best intentions, I'm still using my older laptop. At least it works.

All right, hopefully you can net yourself a better laptop in the future.

If I do, it will likely have to be next year. We are quickly ready to go in come tax money. Thankfully, we're getting at least some of our house repairs looked at. Not all, but at least some. In the meantime, I will see if I can't nurse my computer on another year.

Have you ever done a digital cleaning of your computer (like with CCleaner, from the same company that makes Recuva)? It should help some.

Just recently. Yes. I have a tuneup system from AVG. It came with my antivirus software that I most recently purchased.

That's good, so you should be able to keep chugging along for a while.

The odd thing is that I don't get on my laptop all that much anymore. I am far more often on my phone. the typing is significantly slower, but at least I know it works well.

I find it amusing how often people do their web browsing on mobile devices while at home when they have laptops/desktops. I guess the convenience or habit is powerful.

In my case, it became a habit not out of convenience, but necessity. With my old laptop being put in mothballs, and my new one being a piece of garbage, I used my phone to maintain contact with my interests. Now, I still have the old laptop, but don't get on it very much. I suppose I'm just accustomed to using my phone most of the time.

My phone is going to need replacements soon; it's been acting quite squirrelly and inconsistent as of late. I'm a bit of a curmudgeon with regard to touch interfaces - can't stand the imprecision personally.

I remember stubbornly holding onto the idea of a full keyboard. I desperately wanted to keep all those buttons . . . but once I got used to the touchscreen, it was far faster with more options. Curmudgeon or not, you may like it once you get the upgrade.
