"I will, I will. Give me a few days and I'll be back to normal," Toby said, and for the first time since he had awoken he cupped Maia's cheek and kissed her properly. He still felt a bit weak, dehydrated, and sore but werewolves bounced back. Apparently they were even harder to kill than science believed, when surrounded by the right sorts of entities.
...but, God, it had been close. He would have died had it not been for the response time and the atypical tactics. Any day could be your last. Engagement wasn't going to wait any more.
"We don't get many dangerous missions. This one was sort of an outlier."
"People break the law first, and then they run into entities," Dari said in agreement, "Those men shouldn't have been in a protected forest."

Maia still looked concerned, even after the kiss, which she let linger. How she'd missed him! "I love you," She said. When could she take him home?,
She glanced at Dari for a moment, pushing her mouth to one side. "Can't we put misdirection thing there too, to prevent that?" she asked.

"I love you too," Toby said.
"There aren't any creatures there to uphold the misdirection. Ivy doesn't have any powers, none of her clan do. We've never had problems with their forest before, but now we're probably going to have to get patrols at the very least, or load some fae on to set a trap." Dari was now leaning on Toby's bed with his arms crossed under his chin, just smiling. He was so glad that Toby was alive.

Both Maia's and Dari's phones buzzed within the timeframe of a few seconds. Maia paused, looked down at her phone and looked up to Toby. She was grinning. "Your kelpie is demanding to see you," she said. Rumor had gotten out, then, she supposed. She hadn't left the room since Toby had arrived, except to take care of her own needs.
"Want me to let him in?"

"Does he even know where the hospital is?" Dari asked.
Toby snickered and covered his face. Oh, Kevin. Alright. "Sure. I think I can handle him."
Dari looked to Maia. Which one of them was going to leave the newly-awakened Toby to help Kevin get here?

Maia kissed Toby's cheek. "I'll go get him," she said. "I'll be back in a moment, love." She headed out of the hospital room; she wanted to hurry and be back by Toby's side.
She found Kevin, lost, by the staff lounge. "C'mon. Toby's awake."

While Maia was gone, Dari and Toby discussed the procedure, and Dari gushed a bit about how frightened he'd been and how much it meant that Toby would take a bullet for him. It all stopped when Maia returned, though. During that time, Toby had taken up a better sitting position as to appear more healthy for the tetchy Unseelie.
"Hey, Kevin," Toby said with a smile.

Kevin hurried to Toby's side and gently wrapped his arms partially around Toby. "Toby, you're alright," he said. He'd clearly been worried. He paused after a moment, seeming to realize what he was doing and straightened.
He put his hands behind his back. "I missed you."

"Hey! Yeah, yeah, I'm alright," Toby assured the kelpie while returning the hug. He noted the use of his proper name and was grateful for the gentle hug. "I missed you too, kid. How's life been?" He'd only been gone a little over two weeks, but that was definitely enough to miss someone.

"Lessons have been boring without Dari around. And nothing's fun without you guys. Even Maia's been missing for days and then someone told me you were hurt--" he scowled and then his expression softened to worry. "I don't like you being hurt," he said. He seemed confused for a moment, showing on his face for only a second.
"Why don't I like that? You've made me go soft!"

"Oh, please. Even dead men have emotions," Toby said with a smile. That one was mostly for the benefit of Michael if he was still nearby. You could never know. "No matter the species, people develop bonds. So sorry, we didn't make you 'go soft,' you're just a big softy kelpie." He was teasing of course. The he pulled down his blanket to show an untouched abdomen.
"I'm fine now.I'm sorry you had to find out through the grapevine."

"Hey!" the Kelpie protested, "I'm not a softie!"
Kevin inspected Toby's abdomen, as if expecting to find a fatal injury. "So what we have is a bond?" he asked. "Could you not get hurt? That'd be best."
Maia took her spot next to Toby after bringing ober a chair for Kevin.

Toby chuckled and shook his head. "I've never met a person who didn't become attached to at least one other when surrounded like you are with other people. Don't worry about it. It doesn't make you any less Unseelie."
He watched Kevin look him over and, when the boy seemed satisfied, he pulled the blanket back up.
"Yeah, a bond, and trust me, I try not to get hurt. This was a really a sort of ridiculous situation. The chances of my tie clip wounding me just... the fates were stacked against me, I guess. But I'm okay now. I probably won't ever be hurt like this again." Unless someone shot him in the heart with an all-silver bullet. Then he'd be dead. But that was the only chance!
"He saved Ivy that day, and myself as well," Dari said. "He's a hero."
"Oh, please."

"I don't like anyone else," Kevin responded, immediately. Well maybe Dari. And Maia was quite pretty, but Lori was boring. And so was his weird redheaded ...person. The Kelpie still wasn't sure what to make of that. Maia seemed to be that kind of person to Toby, as well.
He hoped it wasn't catchy.
He looked at Dari. "It'd be better if he'd just transformed and gone GRRR I'm bigger than you and I can turn into THIS! And thrown them against the trees and scared them. Then you wouldn't have gotten hurt. You can't wear clips when you're transformed." he added glancing at Toby. "You should do that next time. They would've run away crying."
Maia's eyes were filled with mirth. She caught Toby's eye. The Kelpie was certainly fond of Toby; and maybe a little too impressed that he was a werewolf.
