I always cut my nails too short too. They grow to a normal length and I'm like Gwah >.<'
Apparently you're supposed to leave a bit of the free edge of the nail when you clip.

Denying your hands get dirty is like saying you can walk on water. Sure, so can I, when it's frozen. You just don't SEE all the dirt/germs you pick up ...
