There are a lot of them. Ultima Online came out when I was in highschool. But I played them all. I still have Ultima 7 on CD

You play the Avatar (not an air bender). A guy who steps into another world to save it with the help of freinds you make in that world. Its a large RPG world will all sorts of monsters and things to do.

Ultima 7 was my favorite, you start out returning to the world as the Avatar. But as soon as you get there, you are stuck in the middle of trying to solve a murder mystery (your friend Iolo's fault for getting you involved in the first place when you could have avoided it.)
You end up having to infiltrate an entire religious sect and find out what they are up to.
