Sabin Duvert "Potato, which is the English term for Solanum tuberosum, is a Carib loanword. It was first "borrowed" by the Spanish, who used the word patata" patata, from Carib (Haiti) batata "sweet potato" *Shrugs*? oh holy cr*p. happy birfday! xd heart

The word potato comes from the Haitian word "batata" which refers to a variety of sweet potatoes. The word came into Spanish as "patata." When the later variants (called papas by the natives) were found, they were also called "patata," and the word made its way into English as potato.

The word Potato (and tomato, along with others) are originally Nahuatl. There was no "term" in Quechua (sp), there are simply too many... so the Conquistadors (sp?) used the Nahuatl word. Which was spoken in the Aztec empire.
Other languages will take words to claim as their own. Same with foods - hence why I used potatoes for those two questions (they've migrated to almost everywhere on earth, the hearty little things).
