........I will remember this in the coming months when I have to get perci-kitty neutered and de-clawed.
Mini-soapbox: Declawing is painful and not-nice. crying

If I recall correctly, doesn't it involve basically clipping the tips of the toes off?

I just use nail clippers to trim my monsters' hurty bits. Even though I've been doing it for a while KC struggles a little (mostly just trying to pull her paw away) and Snickers gives me a look of wounded dignity.

Yep, it's essentially amputating the tip of each toe up to the joint.

I did one declaw as a student, and I sincerely hope I never do it again. It was, perhaps, the most barbaric thing I've ever had to do to an animal.

If anybody's familiar with those guillotine model dog nail clippers, the most common declaw technique basically involves sticking the tip of the cat's toe into one of those, wedging it into the joint, and clamping down. Then one uses a blade to cut out the little bit of bone that is inevitably left behind. If one doesn't get that bone, it can eventually grow out, and causes that cat a great deal of pain every time it walks.

I haven't had the opportunity to do a laser declaw. I'm told it's a bit better, although there's something of a learning curve involved, so it's also not uncommon for it to be done somewhat inappropriately or for mistakes to be made.

I have a little pair of kitty nail clippers that I use. Javert mostly tolerates the experience. He growls a lot and if I do all four feet at once he'll usually bite me just enough to prove that he can. xp

My eye hurts like a ******** my friend's house today I was holding one of his cats... one of those cats that gives no warning as to when it is done being friendly, apparently... after about 10 minutes of being happy as a clam at the chance to look over my shoulder at people from a better height than usual, it suddenly turned and clocled me in the eye. Fortunately it was one of those warning shots with the claws retracted and missed my iris altogether, but my eyes is bloodshot as all hell, sore, and quite teary...

I'd also like to mention that I am not keen on having to wash my eye out, but at least one of the friends we were at the place of gave me the saline for her contacts to use... but it still hurts like ******** seems to be getting a little better (fortunately I'm a fast healer), but I'm still a bit concerned about it. I've had scratches on my eye before, and they aren't fun. I'd also like to keep my perfect 20/20 vision... I'm quite fond of it and would rather keep it as long as possible...

I just do it with the same nail clippers I use for myself. Since I clip em roughly every other week or so, I use that as a chance to remind myself to give em their short two minute soak in a solution of 2 parts water and 1 part rubbing alcohol...

While I'm proud of the fact that my girls have an almost total inability to take a swipe or bite people (even lightly), I'm kind of disappointed since I remember great mock wrestling matches with cats I used to have with just one hand that they'd lightly claw, bite, and kick... They knew what they were doing was play and that a low "no" meant they were getting too rough.

The only time I tend to get a reaction out of KC is when she's pissed off at a cat outside our window, or trying to climb my arms and back during her bath.

Ouch. gonk I've never really had a scratch on my cornea, so I can only imagine how much that hurts. But as jumpy as I am about my eyes, it's a bad imagining.

When I was a kid, I had a friend who owned a cat like that. The cat was sitting on my lap, peaceful as can be, then jumped at my face right for the eyes. I was lucky in that it missed, but instead the cat got a pawful of claws into each cheek just about a centimetre below my eyes, and dangled from my face for a minute. I had a very interesting looking set of puncture wounds for a while after that.

When Javert was a kitten, I used my own nail clippers, but I saw a kitty pair for a good price, and they stay a lot sharper than my own.

Javert's a b*****d. cool I've worked with him a lot, and he doesn't bite or scratch as much as he used to, and he knows better than to do either very hard. Since he knows he can't get me, he usually goes after Genrou instead, which typically ends in comedy. Genrou, fortunately, is an excellent sport.
