Maia looked up at the sound, and gave the newcomer a smile. "Hello," she greeted, and stood from her chair to offer the woman her hand to shake. Not a satyr then, the rumors had been wrong. Well, close?
"Did you come to see Toby? He's looking much better."

Ivy's handshake was weak.
"I did. I hadn't seen him since the incident." She frowned, her brow furrowing. It had been so frightening. So bloody. She had suffered for days with a bullet wound of her own, but she hadn't been shattered like that.
"Is this better? What's happening?"
In truth, Toby's veining had faded to about half depth. He was still pale and unconscious, but the effects of the poison could be seen waning.
"I'm filtering the silver from his blood," Dari said. "He got his tie clip to the gut."
"Silver?"
"Oh. Right. He's a werewolf, and I'm an alien. How do you do. I'm Dari, and this is Toby, and his girlfriend Maia. She's a selkie."
"My, you certainly employ a lot of...um--"
"Entities."
"Ah, yes. That's the word they keep using."

"Much better," Maia assured, looking over Toby. She was still concerned, but she could see the improvement. His veins were no longer the dark blue they'd been when she'd first seen him.
She glanced at Dari. She didn't want to overwhelm Ivy. She knew what it was like to be thrown into a new world, it was frightening. And probably more so, since the poor girl had gotten shot and captured before coming here. She gave Ivy a small smile. "I'm glad you're feeling better. They told me you were injured."

Ivy nodded and sat demurely in the empty chair beside Dari. She looked Toby and the tentacled apparatus that was Dari over a while and watched the werewolf's blood pulse. She looked a bit sick then and looked to his face instead. Then Maia spoke and she turned to her.
"Yes, thank you. They got me right here," she said, gesturing to the side of her ribcage. It would be a kill-shot for a deer, but not necessarily for a person. Luckily she only had a couple of broken ribs and some PTSD to show for it. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I suppose."
"They were poaching," Dari said, "You were fine."

Maia frowned slightly in concern. She still couldn't believe people hunted for sport. She was still adjusting to living away from her beach, she supposed. When humans were capable of horrors not unlike those caused by unseelies.
"You're safe now," she promised. It was scary, but this really was the safest place. They could treat her wounds and help her feel at home. "These guys rescued me a while back," she gestured to Toby and Dari. "Some guy caught me shifting on camera, and all of the crazies came to see."

"They took some photos of me," Ivy said and frowned deeply. She had not been very well-dressed at the time.
"Don't worry about that, we got rid of them," Dari said, and apparently that was enough explanation for Ivy as she smiled and nodded. She took Toby's hand then and continued to look him over. "Silver."
"Mmhm."
Another silence, and then Ivy spoke again: "You met because they saved you too?"

Maia nodded. Not that she'd wanted to be saved, at the time. "They convinced me to talk to them, and then showed me things I'd never seen." She looked down at Toby, then to Dari.
"When do you think we can let him wake up?" she asked.

"When it's all gone," Dari replied coolly, "We're just judging by the veining right now, but there'll be a blood test."
Ivy turned to Maia and smiled. "Like what?" What had they shown her?

"Right. Tomorrow?"
"Well. Like," Maia took out her phone and brought up pictures of Breyer via search. "This," she said. "I hadn't known any place but my beach and the surrounding town. And they introduced me to pizza." And, really, most of the things she enjoyed doing. Cooking, reading, shopping, dancing--they'd introduced her to all of that.
"When you're feeling up to it, I bet we could take you out on the town."

Dari smiled. "Maybe tomorrow."
Ivy leaned over and smiled softly as she looked over the photos of Breyer, and then listened and nodded.
"Oh, I don't know. I've never been very close to the human settlements. It's not safe."

"It's not," Maia agreed. She couldn't blame Ivy, not after what she'd been through. She'd seen the very worst of humans. Poor thing.
She seemed to be satisfied with Dari's response. Maybe tomorrow, they'd see how Toby was.

Later that day, Dari decided it was time to ring Cody. They couldn't Facetime, no, but they could talk. People rarely noticed the difference between alien Dari and illusion Dari's voices. Toby only registered it from so many years of living with Dari in his natural form. He'd only known Cody a couple of months.
It felt a bit odd to be dialing Cody's number while filtering his brother's blood, but it'd be fine, he was sure. This time Cody's phone would show Dari's name as he had set it and Dari's number.

While he didn't have a special ringtone for Dari, his name followed by a heart lit up the screen. Cody answered immediately. "Dari?" he asked. "Love, how are you?" He'd been trying to get a hold of him via his fbi secret number phone but it was impossible to call the private number back, no matter how hard he'd tried to find a return call number.
"How's Toby?"

Oh. Oops. Well then.
"Oh! Uh. He's... recovering." Dari looked over his shoulder at his brother's unconscious form with its lightened veining. "It seemed pretty bad there for a while. I'm sorry I didn't call yesterday."

"Good!" Recovering was good. He just wished he could be by Dari's side through this. He'd never had siblings, but he could imagine how Dari must have felt, thinking he might lose his only family.
"Listen, I called my mom. She put Toby on the prayer chain at the church when I told her he was a friend. I don't believe in that sort of thing, but it can't hurt." It had been all he could do. "Are you alright, though? Really?"
