"Unfortunately we have no machines to separate silver from the blood. Dialysis doesn't work significantly well in the case of blood-integrating entities."
Lori entered, one arm still wrapped around Luca who, mysteriously, had not gone home when he'd felt well enough to stand. "It's a shot to the heart that silver is a done deal. If it gets into the blood stream, the process is longer, like poison, but still ends in death. Every time his heart beats it's pumping silver through his heart. He should be dead, by all accounts, and we'll need to think of something fast. ...what?"
Dari was staring at Lori's chest. The alien reached out and pressed in on Lori's tie clip, looked to Toby's blanketed wound, and then plucked the clip off. He held it over the wounded area of Toby's gut.
Silence filled the room.

Still ended in death. No. That couldn't happen. She wouldn't let it. Toby was stronger than some piece of cheap silver. She took a breath, glared at the clip, and renewed her hold on Toby's hand.
To think HQ would uniform a werewolf with silver. Government run. Cheap. Toby's life was worth more than what it'd cost them to invest a little more into their employees!

"Is this silver?" Dari asked, still holding the clip.
"Silver plated, I think."
Ah, of course. Stainless steel cost more than bronze coated with cheap silver. Dari put it between his teeth, pulled off his ring, handed it to Maia, and swallowed the tie clip.

Maia took the ring, hand tightening around it until her knuckles showed white. She took another breath, looked up as Dari took the clip in his mouth, and swallowed.
Well. That was one way to get rid of it. "Idiots," she muttered. "Plastic clips would've been safer. Or...anything." Anything but silver.

Dari didn't seem to be paying any attention to Maia's ranting. He was still, seeing and ignoring the room.
Lori stood, brow furrowed. What in the ******** can do it," Dari said. The tie clip was visible just behind his throat.
"Do what?"
"...precise dialysis."
The doctor perked. Lori's brows raised.
"Really?" Lori said. Because he was pretty sure they were just going to have to keep Toby comfortable and surrounded by loved ones until it took him.
Dari nodded. "I'm made to pick certain elements out of... well, things. I've had silver before. I just need to get in."
Lori swallowed. In?

Maia paused. She stood and wrapped her arms around Dari. "How?" she asked. Dari been here in the room the whole time, and she'd been thinking they'd need a trip to even attempt saving Toby.

Dari returned the hug.
"Uh." He looked to Maia once the hug had ended. Did she really want to know? He wasn't so sure. "Well if we can make a line in and a line out, I can... live in his bloodstream for a little while. I'll need a chair."
"You think it's possible?" Lori asked.
"Absolutely," Dari responded. He just couldn't call Cody, couldn't Facetime him. Lord, he missed his boyfriend. "How can we get that set up?" He had turned to the doctor.
"What do you mean, a line in and out?"
"Arteries would make it go faster, but I don't want to put his life at risk. I'm going to have to check every nook and cranny, right? So I'll run through his blood, pick up the silver..."
"But you're... I mean, you could be dangerous, injected into a human body," Lori said.
"Possibly," Dari said with a shrug, "but if this is our only chance...?" He wasn't ready to say goodbye.

Maia nodded, taking a step back. "You can have mine," she said. She was hopeful. She trusted Dari, he'd helped her before. "You really think you can?" She asked. Dari was the smartest person she knew. If he thought he could... Well maybe a miracle would happen.
She looked to Lori. "Are you staying here tonight?"

"Uh... yeah.I think I'd like to," Lori said. "They'll definitely want this on the books..." He turned to Luca. "If you don't mind too much."
Dari laughed slightly when Maia offered her chair. "Well, thank you." He meant for later, but that was just as nice.
"I'll go get a kit," the doctor said and brushed past Luca and Lori to leave the room.
Dari turned to Toby. "Michael?" he near-whispered.
Toby's eyes shot open, but the orbs were still rolled back into his head as he slept. All that was visible was the bloodshot whites. Well. That was a little creepy.
Dari continued, "Michael. I'm going to need you to keep his heart pumping."
"I will." Toby's voice, the whites of his eyes, definitely Michael talking.
"Maybe for days."
"I will."

Maia was...a little uncomfortable at the sight of Toby speaking when he was clearly asleep.
Luca nodded "I think you ought to be here," he said. In case Toby needed him. He rather thought he'd be eating a carton of ice cream tonight.

Lori turned and kissed Luca's cheekbone. "Come with me. I need to get set up before this all starts." When they left, it was only Dari, Maia, and Toby. Dari leaned forward and closed Toby's eyes. That was a little freaky.
"I hope this works," he said softly.

"Me too," Maia said, looking at Toby's sleeping form. She took Dari's hand after a moment and gave it a squeeze. "I kept thinking I'd have to go to Breyer and beg. But if anyone can, it's you Dari."

Dari shook his head.
"He wouldn't make it to Breyer." It was terrible to think of, but it was true.
Lori and Dari remained in the room while Toby was anesthetized and cut open. Dari had demanded Maia leave.
When she returned, she would see Dari sitting beside Toby's head. Two odd strands of him ran to Toby's shoulders, covered in membrane, and made an airtight seal. Nothing could be seen, but presumably this was where Toby met Dari physically.
It was a little embarrassing for Dari, really. Here he was again, sharing his fluids with someone without permission. To his people it was a big deal, but this whole thing was a big deal. His brother was dying.
He smiled when Maia entered. He was a little smaller than usual, but he'd rearranged his limbs so he could still function. It was intense multitasking. He probably wouldn't be able to play games or read, and who knew how long this would take, but the Dari/Michael combination had to work, right? Dari kept himself predominantly membranous on the interior so as to not accidentally poison the werewolf.
"All blood circulates in about a minute, so depending on how much I can capture on each go-around, it shouldn't take all too long." As of the moment he was feeling the insides of Toby's arteries, and the pulsing of his heart was visible as Dari's fluids rushed with each beat.
"This is some crazy s**t," Lori said definitively.

Maia did leave when instructed to, but she wasn't particularly happy about it. When she returned, She stared. Well...
Yeah, Lori summed it up pretty well. She sat in a chair opposite Dari. She was prepared to stay up with Dari tonight, to look after Toby. She'd even drained one of those god awful government provided cheap coffees Toby hated so much.

"I told Cody I'd Facetime him, but I think this might be too much for him at the moment," Dari said, half-teasing, as he gestured to his new appendages.
"There's a family room if you want to sleep in a bed, Maia," Lori said, standing. They really shouldn't be talking over the video but ******** it. He'd have the trainees mute it. "Your contract gives you family emergency pay, and this counts." Nevermind the whole 'he was going to propose to you' thing. "Otherwise you're allowed to stay here as long as you don't mess with things. They put Toby out for the process. He'll need another injection to bring him out, and then that's that."
