Maia was glad to have Toby's arm around her. She'd thought she'd lost him, had panicked the moment Michael's message in her office had been clear. She didn't move, except to stroke his hair. She gave Dari a nod, after a moment.
"I love you," she said.
Would she be allowed to stay the night here with him?

Dari was stroking Toby's hair when the werewolf's eyelids began to flutter.
"Starting to feel good?" Dari said with a little laugh.
"Ooooh yeah..."
Dari snickered and kissed Toby's forehead. "Sleep. We'll take care of you."
Toby nodded and gave a weak little "okay." In moments the arm around Maia slipped down and the werewolf was well into a morphine-induced sleep.
Although Michael could have spoken and let his host sleep, he decided to remain dormant and just keep watch over Toby's bodily functions.
Dari sighed and smiled and patted Maia's shoulder. "I'm going to go call Cody."
He stood, trying to release the tension in his shoulders, and crossed outside the double doors to sit on the floor and dial Cody's number. He still hadn't gotten his regular phone back so it threw another unknown name and randomized number.

Maia nodded to Dari. "Okay," she said. She watched him leave out the doors.
Cody's phone hadn't left his pocket in four days. He picked it up on the first ring. "Hello? Dari?"

"Hey, hon!" He was trying to sound chipper, but he wasn't sure how well he was doing. "It's so good to hear your voice."

"I've missed you." Cody paused, seeming to have caught something in Dari's voice. "Love, is everything alright?"

"I've missed you too," Dari said, and then: "Uh... no. I mean, I'm fine. I'm fine. Toby's in the hospital, though. He got shot in the field? So we're kind of holed up here."

"He was shot?" Cody was horrified. "What hospital? Where are you? Is there anything I can do? Is he going to be alright?" When people had had emergencies in his old neighborhood, his mother would bake pies. He wasn't sure how much that helped. He couldn't bake, anyway.

"We're at a small federal hospital. He's, um... yeah. I think he's going to be fine. There are some minor complications but the whole team is working on getting him better."
He could hear Lori discussing werewolves' weaknesses with the doctors.

Federal probably meant special agents only. He was still concerned. He'd come to like Toby and he knew how important he was to Dari. "Are you alright? Can I see you?"

"We just landed, so I think I'd really rather not leave the hospital just yet," Dari said. Toby was doing better, but he wasn't healed. "I'm as good as I can be. I'm going to go get my cell phone back so you can call me, alright? We can Facetime."

Right. Toby was in bad shape then, whatever Dari said. Cody nodded, and then seemed to remember Dari couldn't see him. "Okay. I'll call you. I love you."

"I love you too." Then he hung up. True to his word, Dari went to retrieve his phone, being harangued by everyone he passed about what was going on and stressfully avoiding as many people as he could. He returned to Maia to find Toby still sleeping.
Soon enough the doctors came and had to take Toby for a scan, to see if they could find anything abnormal that might be causing the pause on healing adn that bizarre vein-darkening.
When they came back afterward, Toby was moderately conscious and able to smile at his guests and have a little conversation until the next dose of morphine took him back.
"Well?" Dari said to the doctor.
"Nothing. He's absorbed or rejected all of the buckshot, it seems. There's no explanation."
"That's a strange thing to say. There's always an explanation."

Maia was still watching over Toby, even after the morphine took him a second time. She was grateful for Michael's presence, helping Toby fight whatever had done this to him; but she didn't address the ghost.

It was a few hours later when one of the medics returned, shaking her head. Dari just leaned back and regarded her questioningly.
"Silver," she said.
Dari's brow furrowed. "From what?"
The doctor continued shaking her head. "I have no idea, but it's silver."

Maia looked up at that, wide eyed. Silver? She muttered something that was neither gaelic nor English; but might've been a garbled mix of the two. Silver was a known weakness, even humans knew about it. But if it wasn't the shots, and--
It didn't matter. "How do we help him?"
