Inafay gave her older sister a nod, which she held for a moment, her lips drawn at the corners a bit. "Malla dalninil," she replied, pulling the tentacle rod from it's fastenings on her back, a sharp snap of her fingers beckoning the appendages at the tip to life. Striking the ground with the rod's blunt end, she began intoning a prayer to Lolth, her form shimmering as she gained the blessing of Divine Power. She peered at the Satyr with an curious avian c**k of her head, but didn't approach. Ulvira may have had the luxury of a reprieve, but younger sisters weren't often so lucky.

I thought the tentacle rod was Ghaunadaur's priests weapons.

((They aren't restricted to him, but are a favored weapon. Tentacle rods are used a lot in torture, and they count as a heavy mace. If it displeases Lolth (or Ghaunadaur), I will discontinue it's use. Inafay is not highly ranked in Lolth's clergy, I felt it would be presumptuous, so I went for a more utilitarian approach than an archetypical one.))

((I'm a bit confused.. what do you mean? Lolth's favored weapon is a dagger, Favored Souls of Lolth would get bonuses to daggers, not scourges... *digs for her sourcebooks* EDIT: I don't have my copy of Magic Item Compendium here. redface But I know, at least in normal tabletop play it's fine for a Lolthite to use a tentacle rod. As I said, however; knowing this is not a tabletop session, if it is disagreeable to the gods it concerns *cough*, I will put an end to it. *rabidly tears through Drow of the Underdark to try and glean something concrete* Further edit: I could have sworn I read we went by FR and not Greyhawk here? MORE EDIT: Indeed, in the Dark Elven Lore forum, according to the (OOC) A bit on the Drow Pantheon article, we are using the Forgotten Realms' Dark Seldarine. Therefore, Lolth's favored weapon is a dagger.))

Originally, the tentacle rods were strictly reserved to the clergy of Ghaunadaur (see modules G1-3, Against the Giants, and D1-2, Descent to the Depths of the Earth, both by Gary Gygax). I have never read any source which gives use of the tentacle rods to Lolth's priesthood. In fact, the Snake Whips (which were probably inspired by the original tentacle rods) were not associated with Lolth until Salvatore introduced them for the first time in the Dark Elf Trilogy.

((I have, but I definitely do not hold Salvatore's works canon. In Starless Night there is a Matron of House Horlbar who uses a tentacle rod. Thanks to my friend Jer for jogging my memory on this. That, combined with just.. a sheer lack of any documentation I can find saying it's restricted in FR... I suppose this discussion is at a stalemate. We have three different writers (Gygax, Greenwood, and Salvatore) presenting contradicting views set in two different campaigns here. I COULD go lurk in the WotC forum, I know Ed Greenwood does answer lore questions there. That, however, is going awfully far. redface My loose plan was to get the approval from Orbb-Tinilith and go to the PrC Arachne instead of just coming in out of the blue and saying 'I'm an Arachne,' and making the appropriate changes to my very loose workup from there. The tentacle rod was just to avoid being another Scourge-slinging Lolthite, especially when I wanted to make sure all the channels gave me the go ahead as far as Inafay being a graduate instead of just assuming it. Instead, I've just given myself a headache.))
