The Necron are more flexible than they seem once you get past the core requirements of the army. And their troops are so goddamn powerful that a hugely varied force is unnecessary... after all, they have a statline equal to a space marine with one of the most powerful basic weapons in the game (second only to the Tau pulse weaponry) and the ability to come back to life. Plus they have some outright ridiculous elites and some weaponry that really isn't in the realm of fair...

Jesus, and I thought the only thing they had going for them was the ressurection ability. sweatdrop

Another thing to worry about with the Tau are drone squads. There may only be 8 to a unit with a shitty leadership and the worst ballistic skill in the entire game, but you're looking at a set of 8 twin linked 18 inch range st 5 ap 5 pinning carbines that can move 6 and 6 a turn, deep strike, and cost very little. The two most dangerous uses for them are:

1> Hook them up with your Crisis suit commander as a totally badass retinue... with 10 effective extra hit points and up to 12 weapons firing a round. Give the commander a Target lock and your unit is firing on two separate targets a round.

The Tau played I was playing against did that. He was taking down Tyranids and Space Marines left and right. Nobody was able to take him down, actually. The only reason I won was because it was a timed game.

Quote:
2> Deepstrike them behind oncoming armor. Even four of them stand a fair chance of smoking the rear armor of even most of the heavier vehicles. A full unit of them can easily smoke two or three tanks or troop transports before dying or routing... and a whole 8 only costs 96 points.

That could be a major pain considering how often Imperial Guard armies rely on vehicles...

If you really enjoy the Impies, the Tau might make a good secondary army... and if you pick up the book with the rules for Kroot Mercenary allies, you can use your Kroot for both armies.

Interesting, I didn't know Kroot could be used with the Imperial Guard. That might work well with my army. Have some Kroot keep the front line busy while Basilisks bombard everything else. My plan was to add some Gray Knight Terminators, which could catch people off guard.

Sounds like you got to see the awesome power of the Tau, withering hails of torrential firepower... Especially dangerous when you understand how to prioritize targets and set up firing lanes and crossfire. The funny thing is that the Tau are still actually quite underpowered compared to a Marine... their players just learn to use them better or get bored and move to another army.

Your main strengths against this tactic are that your army is large enough to leave guards near your vehicles and a firing range long enough to butt your tanks up against terrain. Use obscurement to your best advantage, and keep a token force back as reinforcements to deal with surprises like this.

Actually, you might want to hit GW's site and get the free download of the the IG Catachan book. It has a lot of useful stuff in it.

As an IG, you'll have to take the Kroot Mercs as an ally choice. They are outlined in one of the Chapter Approved books... either 03 or 04. The best use for them is as a detaining force. Use their infiltrate ability to seed a cluster or two of them across the battlefield to help break up the open areas you think people are gonna try to charge through... don't leave em in the open, but stuff em into terrain just within charging distance of anyone trying to slip by. Between their two strength 4 attacks per model and their st 4 rapid fire 24 inch rifles, they will cause your opponent to take their time either avoiding them or charging through. Better yet if you can hole them up in at least 6 inches of forrest, which they can fire through yet cannot be fired upon within.

Another odd effect the Kroot have is that many players are somewhat unsure of them... I've watched units capable of eating my chickenheads skirt them entirely out of paranoia. Apparently many Tau players don't use them, so people are unfamiliar with them.
