Unfortunately for her, Michael was in charge of who got the most free will. He remained at half-state.
"Everything needs sunlight, doesn't it?" He paused and thought on it. "Not mushrooms, I guess." But that was pretty much it, wasn't it? Sun lamps existed, he knew that, but who knew how many bulbs he'd go through?
He crouched to stroke the petals of a tulip. He sure was gentle for a violent dead guy.

"Most things," Maia agreed. "But not all. I've heard of flowers that grow in winter and some that bloom at night."

The female half of a strolling couple gave Maia an odd look. Michael just turned to smile at them, and that made them stop looking soon enough.
"I would like that," he said then, and continued to walk through the park. He'd never worn a dress before either. It was interesting.

Maia led the way through the park. It really was beautiful. She loved the cherry blossom trees. And the dogwoods, full of white fluffy flowers. "Is spring your favorite season?" she asked, quietly. She'd noticed the stares.

"It was, once," Michael answered. People would believe she was a small-time actress practicing a scene or, more likely, that she was totally out of her mind before they believed she was possessed. "When I could feel warmth like this. When I could go outside whenever I wished."

"I'll take you out whenever you like," Maia offered. It'd be easier once Toby was home, he was better at thinking up ideas. "Where ever you like."
People were staring again.

'Body' still didn't seem right, even with all of these years dead. At least he'd maintained a verbal filter.

"I've seen the house," Michael said, "Just not in a long time now." And only parts of it. He hoped Maia wouldn't mind him wandering at night. He'd like to see more. "How will we get there?"
Another cab, he hoped, rather than a bus. He wasn't sure he could stand that many people at once.

"A cab," Maia said. "I want to try learning to drive sometime in the fall. I'm a little nervous, though." Riding in cars was fine, but the idea of being behind the wheel? Terrifying.
"What do you want to do when we get there?"

"Well, I've never driven. I've seen people drive. It doesn't look so hard," he said. "It's a definite step up from carriages and horses. Or just plain horses. Everything is different now. You should learn. Then you wouldn't have to keep taking cabs." After all, you couldn't trust those you loved, let alone strangers.
"I don't know. Whatever you like. I'm your captive audience until you don't want me to be any more."

Maia nodded. "And then I wouldn't have to wait for Toby to come home to go out with friends." She was nervous, but she had been with all firsts.
She frowned slightly at Michael's words. "I want to take you places more often," she said. "No one should be inside all the time. Not when weather's like this." The cab showed, and she climbed in, giving the guy her address.

"Sometimes I prefer to stay inside," Michael said. "Most times."
Then Maia had control of her lips and Michael thought maybe she would look less crazy if she held her phone to her ear and pretended. He clammed up again, becoming just the full feeling of warmth as the cab headed toward home.

There was no more news after that second day.
On the ninth day, Lori and two of the medical staff sprinted down the hall under the pulse of a silent white light spinning in several plastic casings in the wall. Those they passed turned to each other. A murmur followed them.

Maia was oblivious, for the most part, to the activities in the hallway. She'd hunkered in her office and was studying up on fae--when she happened to look up. She noticed the light.
That was...odd. She hadn't thought anyone was scheduled to return; maybe it was an entity? She went into the hall.
