I don't know if it helps any, but I've read the first 4 books of the Chobits manga and it really isn't that sexual. Yes, there is a bit of fanservice when Chii's shirt slips of her shoulder or something, but it is more in the nature of "Look at this beautiful body and admire it" instead of "Don't you want to do nasty things to this body" Also, one of the major themes of the manga is Hideki's struggle not to see Chii as a beautiful, sexual object but rather a person with feelings and emotions. I mean, think of how much he struggles with himself when trying to find her 'on' switch!!

I've read a pretty good amount of manga that has been imported to America (since I live in America) and I find that it really doesn't have that heavy of a sexual theme. Yes, there is some talk of love and sex, but the audience that it is geared to (young teenagers) are constantly thinking about these sorts of things. Most of the time, its healthy discussion of these topics, not lewd.

Eh, sorry for the rant. I just get kinda defensive when people call something I love gross and indecent without even knowing much about it. Oh, and this wasn't directed at anyone here in particular. I know you guys are all respectful people....I just had to give a general defense. I don't mean to attack anyone..... sweatdrop

Liz: Whether the directed audience, young teenagers, as you've said, are thinking about love and sex or not, that doesn't mean that it should have to be there. I don't see how an "on" button in the cervix of an android is a healthy, somewhat sexual, point to bring into a book. They could've easily put the button on her back. Now don't get me wrong, I love chobits, along with other manga that includes these themes. Though I didn't call anything gross or indecent, but yes, I do have a knowledge of the discussion.

I'm not saying the location of the 'on' button is good.....I'm saying that the struggle Hideki has when he realizes that the button is located at the v****a is the good part. Instead of just going for it, he struggles with it and is very reluctant and somewhat ashamed of touching Chii there.

Also, I am kinda looking at this from a marketing stand point. If teens are thinking about love and sex, they will identify with characters who are thinking about the same thing. They won't be interesting in characters who aren't struggling with the same things that they are. And if manga writings can create such characters and have them deal with issues of love and sex in a healthy way, then kudos to them.

I personally think that sex is way too stigmatized. People have such issues with it and maybe if we could all learn to approach it in a healthy positive way some of those issues would disappear.

Liz: The struggle is better than none, yes, but if the button was placed elsewhere, the struggle wouldn't have had to even happen. Personally, I think teens thing too much about love and sex. We have an entire life ahead of us, why not let it come later? I mean... Have you seen the ratings of teen pregnancy lately? It's skyrocketed since a few years ago. I have an opposite view than you do about sex. Instead of everybody approaching it without an issue, I think it should be put away, something secret of people's lives.

lizstar: Maybe I just have bad luck with the Chobits manga. The second time I picked up a volume, the very first page I opened up to featured Chii slipping out of a maid/waitress uniform so she could give it to someone else, and apparently she doesn't wear underwear. The last volume I paged through and the major theme of Hideki and Chii being able to be together involved that on/off switch location. I mean the characters themselves are very sweet and all, but the situations/circumstances they're placed into...yeah. Never buying these manga.

*loves on her Rurouni Kenshin manga* I know it's been made into an anime and translated (and mutilated in the process domokun ) but have the manga been translated? That's actually a good boys' manga. Themed on revenge and responsibility and repentance, and while there's romance involved, it's light.

Suki Dakara Suki is a CLAMP manga that I know has been translated, but I can't remember the English title because it wasn't a direct translation. ^^; Possibly something like, "Like is Like" or "Love to Love." It's a very cute and fluffy romance. It's a three-book set featuring a young short-haired girl, an unsmiling teacher, and two teddy bears. *hee*

Chobits was written to be a manga boys would like, but its not that sexual. What makes it that way is the way Hideki is preverse with his love of Porn. Which you don't see all that much with in the series. But the relationship themes are typical Clamp.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 18, 2005 2:55 pm

I think the problem is that we don't allow sex to be something private. We think its this big issue and everyone gets involved in it. I mean, the best example is the Clinton/Lewinski scandal. The press and the public jumped all over him because he had a relationship with her. They dragged it into the public and made a big deal over it. But then, one of America's favorite presidents, John F. Kennedy, had at least one affair (and maybe more) but no one cared because the press stayed out of his private life. Then, sex was viewed as something private and people didn't spend time arguing about who's allowed to have sex and when and with whatever type of protection. People didn't talk about it and get hung up over it.

I think teen pregnancy has skyrocketed because we spend so much time lecturing teens that they shouldn't have sex. I don't know about you, but when I was a teen, if my parents told me I shouldn't do something I wanted to do it. I didn't always do it, because I had very reasonable parents who sat down and talked to me instead of laying down ultimatums, but not all teens are as lucky as I was. I also went to school during a time when it was ok to teach safe sex instead of abstinence. If you look at the statistics, my age group has the lowest rate of STDs and teen pregnancy. My sister (who is 4 years younger than me and is 16 right now) was taught only abstinence in school and it is her age group that has horribly high pregnancy rates. Makes you think....

Liz: That brings up another point. Why are most teenagers so horribly stupid? Adults lay down ultimatums for a reason, to protect us and help us through our beginning of life. If the teenagers are too stupid to realize that, then they've got a serious problem here. I don't think somebody should want to do something just because they're told not to do it. They think that "Oh my god, I'm going to miss out on something so drastically important that I know nothing about, and my life will end if I don't do it!". Sorta sad, if you ask me.

No offense to anybody. sweatdrop

Hmmmm this reminds me of somthing that happened today. I had the first days of the Sexuality Education in health today, and wow, so many of those kids are immature. Not to be mean to them, but you can kidna tell who's most likely not going to be making the best decisions in the near future.

On another subject I wish I could read/speak Japanese. Which is why I'm taking Japanese for my foriegn language at school biggrin (I signed up to take the class next year) I just wish I could take more than the required two years I need for college. I wanna take band all four years, so I can't take Japanese those years either. On the bright side it's extremely likely I'm going to get into the class because most kids don't want to take it. They think it's the hardest language, but at my school it's not. It's the easiest. They have extra credit for that class like reading a manga or going to a Japanese resteraunt smile

I think that is just the nature of that age. Its a time when you are becoming an adult and you want to strech your wings on your own. I remember resenting my parents' control over me at that time and my little sister feels the same way now. That's just the way it is.

In any case, I don't think we should really carry on this discussion here. We are kind of monopolizing the thread and maybe scaring off those people who are teens. I don't want to do that. So, I'm going to stop here. Of course, I think we agree in a sense, we are just saying things in different ways. So, lets just leave it at that.

(Sorry to scare you off, sailor!!)

Eep! I'm so happy (and hyper) My friend brought back those mini sugar stars from this place in Canada where she went for spring break. They have the best Japanese candy stores, as well as other Japanese themed shops (well at least thats what she said) So I was so hyper during lunch today smile
