Terryn sighed and pulled him in for another kiss, at this point not caring if they were caught. "Unfortunately. One day, do not worry, we will win. They can not keep us apart forever."

"No, but they certainly will do their best," answered Marcus, after pulling away regretfully. "Take care, Terryn," he said at last, before kissing her once more, quickly, and heading out to the coach.

Terryn was reluctant to let him go, but they really had no choice. Sighing, she leaned against the facade of the building as she watched the carriage pull away, looking down as she entered her home again and passed right by her father up to her room.

((shall we go to maybe when they get replies from the letters?))

OOC: We shall.

Marcus was reviewing letters from his estate managers when a servant handed him the letter from some Evelyn. Thinking that perhaps it was one of his grandmother's friends, he called for the Duchess, and was surprised when she told him that the letter was for him.

He read it. Thrice. And even then, he was having trouble digesting this information. "Grandmother!" he called out finally. "What--what is the meaning--what have you--what is this?"

"Father! How could you?" Terryn crumpled up the letter and threw the balled up paper into the fireplace. "He wants to have lunch with me tomorrow. How could you do something like this to me?" All of Lord Arvin's attempts to quell his daughter anger failed, mainly because he was scared stiff of her. "Father, you know that I have feelings for Marcus, not that awful DuBois boy. How dare you tell him that I wanted to see him again?!"

"Do you really mean to say that I have to spend the evening with a pugnacious beast that can't even spell 'Sincerely' correctly?" bellowed Marcus, a little lightheaded.

"She's a nice girl," answered the Duchess, in a very detached voice. "I'm sure you'll like her. And it can't hurt."

"Can't--does it mean nothing to you that I'm seeing Terryn?"

"You're not seeing her," corrected the Duchess. "And haven't done so in some time."

"Grandmother!"

"Never! I will not waste a moment of time with that disgusting, insufferable wretch! I told you that I wish to see nobody except for Marcus and I refuse to go tomorrow, even if I have to lock myself in my room!" Terryn dashed past him and pounded up her stairs, slamming her door loudly before locking it. Imemdiately she sat at her desk and began writing.

Marcus,

I fear my father is at it again. He has attempted to play matchmaker and is now trying to force me into a luncheon with that awful DuBois boy tomorrow. Marcus, I do not know if I will survive the entire afternoon in such cruel and unusual torment, so if I end up strangling myself, please remember me fondly.

Has your grandmother been doing any of the same? I have a small hunch that they are plotting again, but I do not know what their goal is. I only hope that there is someway we can trick them and be together again. I would much rather deal with your arrogance and lasciviousness than the dog like visage and mindless dronings of the great hunter Andrew DuBois.

We must stop them, Marcus. It is hard enough being apart from you and having no means of correspondence but a few smuggled letters. Being thrown back to the wolves of society is unbearable. Please respond quickly, you can use Ebony.

Waiting,
Terryn

"Ebony!" Terryn whistled and waited a moment for a black raven to perch on her window sill. "Take this to Marcus, you know where he is." She tied the letter to Ebony's leg and gave it a sip of water from a small dish she kept on her desk before sending the bird off. Ebony was a swift flier, with any luck she would make it by nightfall.

Marcus had to go fetch himself a glass of wine after he'd read Terryn's letter. So they were plotting. But for what? What could they possibly gain from this? The raven made an impatient noise, and Marcus hastily took a roll of parchment from his desk and began to write.

Terryn,

Indeed, the elders have been plotting. The Duchess has arranged for me to spend an evening with some Evelyn--an absolute bore and a high-hat, by the sound of her letter. Yes, she's sent a letter to me, under the pretense that I wrote her. And yes, you are correct in assuming that the Duchess wrote her, and no, I do not blame you in the least for cursing Grandmother.

And I plan to fall ill or have urgent business on whichever evening the Duchess decides I should be cornered by this Evelyn, in the occasion that you were wondering.

I assume that your father also has written to Andrew in your pen. No doubt that he's madly in love with you again. By all means, go. It will give us something to mock later, when we are no longer forced to stay away from each other.

Yours,
Marcus

Terryn sighed. It was just as she had expected, unfortunately. Hearing one of the attendants knocking on her door with dinner, which, despite her father's sudden persistence that she needed to be eating more, she was not hungry for, she frowned and composed a quick reply.

Evelyn? Dear God please tell me you do not mean Evelyn D'Avengline. She is Serina's niece, and a terrible bore (and boar) at that.
You should have seen the letter. Full of senseless compliments and smudges, which I attribute to his overperspiring palms. I threw it in the fire, but apparently it did not erase the meeting. I shall go, if only to gain a greater appreciation of you. But I must leave. For whatever reason, my father has been forcing food down my throat as of late. I shall write you after my fiasco is over tomorrow.

Marcus barely had time to wonder at his grandmother's obvious desperation. Really. Serina's niece? They must have spent all of 10 minutes plotting this. But before he could reply, his grandmother entered the room, and Marcus stuffed the letter into a drawer. "Yes?"

"I thought it would be nice if you could spend a bit more time with Evelyn," said the Duchess sweetly.

Marcus made a face. "Did you really?"

"The coach has already arrived. You'd be putting the poor coachman out of work if you must be so fussy."

"I know what you and the Earl have been up to," began Marcus, as he was pushed towards the door. The Duchess, unshaken, smiled again and very nearly tossed her grandson out of the door.

Terryn spent the entire night in her room, refusing to eat or speak to her father. She wanted very much to go out and practice her archery, but she heard the earl instructing one of his attendants to stand around and make sure she didn't leave. Terryn sighed as she laid on her bed and tried to concentrate on reading, but it was no use.

Marcus' mouth fell open. She was...hideous. To the extent that Marcus would not have believed. "Er...how do you do?" asked Marcus, feebly. He had a feeling that he would not have to feign illness to get out of this one.

"And this one?" demanded Andrew, screwing up his face and tying a pair of ugly brown, red, and green striped pants.

"Brings out your eyes, m'lord," answered his servant timidly. He'd taken to saying that when there was nothing else to say.

"Rather fetching?"

"The most fetching, m'lord."

"I thought so. I thought it would go wonderfully with the green shirt. The vivid one."

Inwardly, the servant shuddered. "The young Duchess will be enthralled."

"Yes. I imagine so."

Evelyn immediately began with her infamous giggling, which sounded more like a Banshee being tickled with spikes. "I'm wonderful, and oh aren't you handsome!!" She giggled again and smacked him coyly with her handfan.

((wait...Terryn's the daughter of an earl, not a duke...what would that make her?))

OOC: Oh. Er. Sorry. Pretend I edited it. And Wikipedia says that since there is no feminine form of Earl, the feminine equivalent of a British Earl would be a Countess.

Marcus raised his hands in his own defense, and received a sharp blow on his knuckle. She was horrible. Horribly horrible. He'd have to keep her occupied somehow, to protect his ears. "Er...well, I understand that the Baron is hosting some musicians today," he said, lying. "Would you care to attend?"

((really? interesting...so it works with an Earl or a Count...i thought it might be a Pearl or something weird heehee))

"Really? Oh Marky-poo, I'd love it!" If Evelyn's horrible cockneyed accent wasn't bad enough, her piercing richter worthy voice was. She threw her arms around his neck and gave him a kiss on the cheek, which was nothing like Terryn's. Instead of light and smewhat reserved, her kisses were big and sloppy, as if she was trying to French him but missed.

((oh this is fun!))
